Are we able to walk the half marathon? I have rheumatoid arthritis/rheumatoid autoimmune disease, so running is out if the question...

Oh. My. Goodness. Here's a lesson for any new runners. Just because you CAN go out fast does not mean you SHOULD. Let my husband pace and went out WAAAAAAY too fast. Crapped out at the end. Instead of beating last year's PR, missed it by a full minute. Bummed, but it was hot and we still finished sub-30, but I'm kinda disappointed knowing what I could have done if I had paced it better. Ah, well - even runners that have their feet wet have lessons to learn! :thumbsup2

Amy,

I think starting out way to fast has plagued me all last year!! I totally understand. My 5k, 10k and half times have not improved by much because I always run my first portion of the race faster than my last. I am practicing negative splits in earnest this year because jumping the gun leaves me wastes the last portions of all my races!!!

Would love to join you, I've done triathlons before but never a half marathon and am loving a new excuse to get to disney.:)

How did our Expedition Everest runners do??

DH and I did well. Had I registered us as a military team - which I thought I had done - we would have gotten a 3rd place award. As it was, we came in 52nd for co-ed teams. Oh well! :)

Our 5K time was 30:31, which is about right for me. Our net time for both was 51:59. Now we have a goal to beat for next year. :)

I will say that I find HM runners much nicer than these runners. We were in wave 3 and we had to fight to get into the chute with others that weren't in our wave. And then people were rushing to get to the front so they could WALK the entire race. Seriously?!?! You can't start in the back of the wave if you're going to walk? And SO many people were stopping to walk in the middle of the path without checking to see if there were people behind them. And continued to walk in the middle of the path instead of moving out of the way of people running. It was very frustrating.

I was also disappointed with the wave setup. There was no control over who got into which wave. There were people from wave 8 in our wave. Why do people need to cheat?!? Some people don't have integrity, I guess. :confused3

But, we'll do it again next year anyway. :)

I have one of those!!! I stuck it on my bulletin board, though, so I can see it while I treadmill. (Plus, I didn't want to stick it on my car and have someone steal it!)

WOW. Just wow! I can't believe people cheated like that! And yes I agree, walkers should start in the back so they don't get ran over! That is very frustrating.
Nice job, anyway! I didn't know they had teams. That's pretty cool! I would like to run it with DH also They just combine your times?

:welcome: to you both! This is a great group...very encouraging with runners and walkers of all shapes, sizes, and fitness levels here. :) I'm in the S - L - O - W group. :lmao:

Agg - yes, you can walk the race...I belive we have several on in the group that are planning to do just that!

I went to the gym yesterday and walked on the treadmill for an hour. I jogged for a minute for each five minute increment...haha, does that even make sense?

Yall have a great day! Happy Monday!!!

A relative asked me a few days if I would want to do this with her and I am so excited.I have not run for about 10 years, but I do walk every day. She plans to walk this half, but I bet we will start to add some running .I have gotten slow and gained weight so I have been looking for something to inspire me.This has done the trick.I am reading these posts and making plans.
Thanks to all of you for the great tips. I am so excited!!!:dance3:

If you register as a team, you get two identical bibs, and one of them has the chip timer on it. We actually ran together and did the scavenger hunt together as well.

You *have* to finish the scavenger hunt with your teammate, but you don't *have* to finish the 5K together. So, if you want a fast run time, you can have your faster runner wear the timing chip. But, since you have to wait for your partner to finish the scavenger hunt, I don't know how you'd get a good overall time if the runners don't finish together as well. Or, you can just register as single runners individually and 'compete' against each other. : )

I was there...assigned to run in wave 8 as a female team...and actaully ran in wave 8 ;) I did wonder though how they were controlling that when it was just a mass of people moving to the start line following one person holding a sign...I'm sorry you had to deal with people in the wrong wave...that is frustrating. What I found to be very chaotic about the race was that if you were a late-wave runner, by the time you made it into the park, the bulk of the participants were running around all over the place doing their scavenger hunt...darting in and out of the 5k course and if you weren't being really alert, you could have gotten on the wrong path several times! This was my first time doing EEC, but I get the feeling it's getting a little overgrown and that they maybe need to re-work the course or cap the participants at a lower number. The super-duper narrow finish line was really a disappointment too...and the line to get your medal as you finished was backing up to the finish mats! On a positive note...the clues ended up being easier to solve than I expected, thank goodness, and riding EE twice back to back with hardly any wait...AT NIGHT!...was really fun! I ran it with an 11 year old...this was her first running event ever and she was really excited to do it at Disney and get a medal. I had this trip planned for us before I realized there was an event, so the race ended up at the tail end of our trip...that was rough on my tired legs and feet! Definitely won't do that again if I can help it :headache: We ended up with 40:22 for the 5k and 30:something for the scavenger hunt. 285th of 701 in our division. I'm very proud of her for this accomplishment!

Cannot wait! Will be my 3rd Princess half with my Mom. And can't wait for the 5th anniversary medal. Gotta get that bling! princess:

Sports bra advice for a coworker please!

I have a coworker who is getting interested in the thought of running but has a hard time finding a way to keep the girls from escaping. Now little me could probably shot in the kids section for one so I am no help.

She is a 38DD and says she has never found anything that keeps them from flopping. She said she has considered an ace bandage. I said I would ask here for help. Any advice?

(And yes, you can all think I am weird since this was a conversation at work):cool1:

I am a 36/38 D/DD (depends on the bra). I wear the Champion Double Dry model #6242. It has underwire and is very supportive while still breathable. I've tried a bunch of them and it's by far the best. Not cheap, but worth every penny.

I would suggest a running store that specializes in running bras. She needs a encapsulating running bra the Tata tamers by lulumon or the Enell sports bra are very good running bras. She has very good reason to be concerned as not only does it make for an uncomfortable run but she could stretch out those delicate muscles and be left more saggy. I started training last year when my baby was 3 months and I was a DD and nursing. I am down to a D and I am adamant about my running bra as my shoes.

Thanks for that info! It sounds like a lot of fun!

I'm a 36/38DDD, so I know all about this! Ironically, I failed PE in middle school because I refused to run because of my girls!!:rotfl2:
What I'm doing at the moment, since I can't quite afford a super-duper sports bra, I'm wearing my regular bras (that are already awesome with no jiggle) and a great Danskin High-Impact sports bra OVER it (so I'm doubled up on the support). Also, in case anyone is wondering, doing it this way is very comfortable - the girls don't touch each other like they do in other sports bras! Once I'm 'locked and loaded', I don't feel them at all when I run!

Eventually I'll be able to afford these. Sierra Trading Post has some Moving Comfort bras that I've also heard were good and they are running about $30 right now. They don't have my size, though, so it doesn't do me any good!

How did our Expedition Everest runners do??

I was there and had a blast. My friend and I finished in about an hour and five minutes. We did the 5K in 39:31 minutes and our scavenger hunt in 25 something. We finished 178 out of 701 women's teams, so we were happy with that. I was surprised we did that well because I felt the effects of the humidity during the run and felt like I was really slowing us down. Guess I have a lot of fun to look forward to when those summer runs roll around.

We started in Wave 6 and it was tough to get around folks by that time. There was a lot of bottlenecking in the park. I run/walk and I always start towards the back. It might be mental on my part, but I would rather pass folks later than have a horde of people rush past me at the start.

I bought the runDisney 13.1 in training magnet too :) I have to still put it on my car, though.
