I couldn't agree with that statement more. We had many college visits and finally our DD decided on a private all girls school. DH and I "knew" this was the right fit and we were so happy when she decided on that one. Even though it's hectic, enjoy the time you spend on the college search. It can be fun.

LovesDumbo, I'm watching the game on tv, I tried, but just couldn't get tickets.

One of my coworkers is going somewhere (Baltimore I think) for April vacation so they can go to some games. I guess the whole season is sold out. We were at Disney when the won the World Series and didn't know they were at MK til the next day.

LovesDumbo: Hope your mom gets better soon.

To the rest of you--now you have me almost convinced to go on a cruise! You make it sound so divine. But I get motion sick so easy, I'm horrified I'd spend the whole trip being miserable. But if I could stay healthy, it sounds so enjoyable! Only a Disney Cruise, of course! ;)

Hello LL’s! I don’t visit this thread nearly as often as I should. I will make an effort to mend my bad ways, LOL!

As far as the cruising goes, count me in as another person who keeps going back and forth on whether I want to go on a Disney cruise or not. I worry about the motion sickness aspect, though I am not highly motion sensitive (e.g. I don’t typically get car sick, but I have been on one boat trip that nearly made me lose it (we were cresting 20 foot waves in a small boat) which scares me; I do get sick on thrill rides/roller coasters so I avoid those). I don’t think we’d be able to afford concierge, so it would be a regular room for us. :)

Angel, my prayers are with your family. You have certainly been through a lot, and with such good attitudes.

Tammi, I have been meaning to ask you—who is the figure skater in your family? I have always enjoyed watching figure skating during the winter Olympics—the things that skaters can do has always amazed me. Maybe it’s because I can hardly even stand up on ice skates. :teeth:

And my mom wasn't taking care of herself and as a result fell and has been in the hospital for the past 9 days. The doctor said she stopped taking her medicine and that is why she's as bad as she is now. Looks like she'll be there a while longer and then they think she'll have to go to rehab for a week or 2 to get her stregnth back before she can go home.
My heart is with you, and your DM is in my prayers. Does she reside close to you? Sorry to read about all these troubles. Sometimes I think the "stress" associated with them is actually WORSE than the prognosis! Be well, rest and know you are in my thoughts.

Tammi~Mount St. Mary's College is an "ALL~GIRLS" Catholic College! In fact, it's the ONLY one of it's kind West of the Mississippi. DD has never concerned herself with this issue, and was also accepted at another all-girls school in Mass (Wellesley). Both are fine institutions, and both offer astounding and challenging academic programs for young women. :goodvibes
Since she has been in private catholic her entire academic life, smaller private colleges have proved most appealing.

DH and I act mostly as "sounding boards" for DD. She runs her own thoughts across us, and we try not to affect her decision or thought process with our own opinion (good or bad). This requires a LOT of "tongue-biting" as both of us struggle to refrain from voicing concerns and desires. I truly believe in order for her to have NO REGRETS, the choice must remain personal--100%.
Oddly, I know MANY parents whom "select" the school for their child/children(?). I find this disturbing, as college is not to be confused with HS. Perhaps, these parents believe because they are funding the venture, they have control. :confused3

Steph~Oh, GO on a CRUISE!! :boat: You will LOVE it!!
Funny you mention the "motion sickness" fear. I too, worried about this before we took our initial cruise, and spoke with our family physician. He gave me a prescription for "transderm scop" patches! We all wore them, with no ill side-effects. They apparently worked, as we never experienced any sea-sickness. If you experience sea-sickness, I would definitely speak with your family physician about this patch. :flower: For more info, read here:
http://www.transdermscop.com/site2/

ead79~Perhaps we should all plan a LL CRUISE!!! :confused3 Just a nice quick land/sea adventure, *(which would include a 3/4 day trip on the DCL). This would be a great way to finally overcome the trepidation associated with this form of travel! :grouphug: I think it would be a FABULOUS IDEA! Count me in...(I call the Walt suite!!--although I'll probably have to flip BT for this one!! LOL) :cloud9:

BTW..if we did a GIRLS-ONLY[/b] cruise, and shared cabins...I'm sure you could AFFORD CONCIERGE this way (everyone else too)!! The suites are definitely ROOMY enough to share. ::yes:: We could match-up with one another before we take off, and then "switch" once onboard if any creative differences arise. :wizard: What do you think?!?

ANGEL~My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family. :lovestruc

Enjoy the WEEK!! TTFN...DF99 :wave2:

What a coincidence, my DD has had much the same educational experience. She graduated from an all girl Catholic High School and there were only 40 total in her class. Of course, her first thought was that she wanted a co-ed large college. She quickly changed her mind after visiting a few though. Have you come to visit Wellesley yet? We don't live too far from there, so please let me know if you're going to be in our neck of the woods. Perhaps we could meet for lunch or something.

Thanks for the invite! Yes, we have visited Wellesley ( a while back), along with a few other of the "seven sisters" schools. Actually, I'm a "Meffie" girl (born in Medford), with family in Boston. My mom is from Boston (lived in Malden for a spell too). She and my DF are at the CAPE right now!! :goodvibes Therefore, I'm a true-blue dyed in the wool YANKEE (and a rabid fan of the boys of summer too). My DM is a SOX fan...so we go 'round and 'round when it comes to this subject!! I even have a subscription to BOSTON mag, and keep up on all the latest news via family and a GF residing in Belmont. :flower: Mouseteacher is an administrator at a small catholic school in Mass, outside of Boston. You just can't beat a catholic school education. ;) There are 74 students in my DD's graduating class. :flower: Thanks again.

Just wanted to run in and give a big room wave! Thinking of you all!
DS reminded me on the way home from hockey practice that I need to remember to play the lotto so we can live in "our" two bedroom suite at AKL! In our pipe dream, we also spend a month at the GF due to all of tammi's great postings! *Yes, Lisa... we take a long needed Disney cruise in this dream, too!* We have our first three months of winnings all planned out at Disney, while we decide what to do with the other 119 million! LOL I know I'll forget to play my numbers, as we hardly ever do such a thing!

Sweet dreams!
Debbie

Ditto on the room wave! :wave2: Am enjoying all the talk of cruising (living vicariously) as well as the insights and coincidences noted on the raising of daughters (now this is the REAL world)! Our oldest will be 14 tomorrow... seems like just yesterday that she was jumping off the sofa belting out "...a whole new world..." (once a Jasmine, always as Jasmine)! ;) Though it's years away, we have a professor friend who is enthusiastic at the prospect of introducing our DD to her own alma mater, Wellesley. We'll see what the future will bring... now that her HS choice has been made, she's consumed with thoughts of her semi-formal and other 8th grade closing rituals...

I had to chuckle at the Yankees in Red Sox territory references. As NJ natives, DH and I grew up as fierce Yankees fans and those habits are hard to break! Our girls are partial to the Yankees yet our son is a true New Englander as far as baseball is concerned. He certainly revelled in the Red Sox victories last fall! :teeth:

Hi to all of you!!
Thought I'd chime in too. Hope all of you in need of prayers and pixie dust are receiving them tenfold. I, too, have been in the middle of family health issues with an elderly aunt. After a fabulous trip to Sanibel before Easter, I came home to find my aunt in the hospital with what was initially thought to be a stroke. Now they think she got her meds screwed up and kind of overdosed. She needed 24/7 supervision for 2 weeks before we were able to move her in to an assisted living environment. I spent 7 nights ( and several days) with her helping with the big transition. While it was very exhausting caring for her, the rewards have been tremendous. I saw her literally come back to the person she was before all this happened - and though it was gut-wrenching leaving her home of 50 years, she is doing great. We are hopeful that once she has made the adjustment, she will thrive in her new place.

Sanibel was awesome despite Charley's handiwork. We walked the beaches, shelled our hearts out and had some fabulous meals. Our condo was 50 steps from the Gulf and the view could not be beat. My DD joined us midweek as she was on a class trip to DC - DH, DS and I saw 2 Twins games! Count me in as a big baseball fan...

Our almost 14 year-old DD has made her HS choice - a smaller Catholic school. She's very excited since it has a theater school within the school itself and that is one of her loves. SHe just wrapped up "Guys and Dolls" - it was so much fun. Now on to dance competition season. Funny some of you are talking colleges - she has already asked about Loyola. One step at a time!

We loved cruising DCL - the kids keep asking when we can do that again. I was also concerned about motion sickness but each of us took a Bonine every morning (like Dramamine but without the drowsiness) and we never felt a thing. It really is a relaxing and special vacation.

I feel as though I have abandoned my mom/daughter trip in May! I need to get my planning folder out and review our plans - get that excitement going again. We leave in 37 days!!!

Hope all of you are having a great week and that any troubles are soon behind you.

Glad to hear things are going better!

Love that Meclizine (Bonine)-I took it everyday of our cruise too! Worked wonderfully. - Already got our next cruise, just before christmas booked!.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words and thoughts.

DF-my husband's 2 sisters went to Wellesley College and my very good friend's DD went to Wellesley College. I went to Babson just down the street in the town of Wellesley.

:goodvibes BABSON!! Great school!! I've always heard nothing but positive things about this college (from my DM & relatives). Wellesley is a Dynamite school, with incredible alums. It's so nice to read so many of our "daughter's" are interested in such phenomenal colleges. DM is a Harvard~Girl, all the way. Actually attended the seven sister's school associated with this college...and she's better known as a "CLIFFIE!!" to all her close friends. I'm sure those of you in Beantown have heard this term before!

My DF attended Berkeley, and also Harvard (both post-grad). They married after her graduation from college (but did not begin a family until five years later--extended "honeymoon!"). DM attended all the sporting events associated with this school, and was even a die-hard "BRUINS" fan--never missing a game (with all her friends). She recounts more fighting in the STANDS than on the ice (especially when the ISLANDERS were in the house!). :rotfl: She remains close with all her friends from home, as well as college.

In fact, it seems my parents are ALWAYS attending a "Reunion" of some sort. Last year, it was an Annapolis reunion and some other NAVY/college get-togethers. This year, it's something else (they just returned from a function held in a private home on LI--Hamptons). They also took in a show..."A Chorus Line" (one of my all-time FAVS!!! ) @ the Southampton College. They seem to practically "live" on the Cape, when not at home. When I call their home and get no answer, I always phone the Cape. When they answer, my DF will say they just decided to "get-away" for the week, etc. They are currently in FLINT MICHIGAN visiting some of my DF's family!! After this...they are on their way to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia to visit more family (mom's side). They TRAVEL all the time!!

DD is not so fond of the Harvard institution, and has heard/read things over the years which have "altered her views" with respect to a woman's place in this school. :confused3 She actually prefers Yale, and NYU over Harvard. But, in the end...she has true designs on "Oxford" for her post-grad law studies/degree. She believes it will be an easier transition coming from a school in England, as opposed to one in the U.S. (hence her desire to study/live abroad full time rather than the usual semester or two from a US-based college). She has always been one to "look-ahead and plan" with respect to such things. I believe she is most likely correct, and will end up where ever she wishes. ;) She has some friends attending Harvard, as well as BC. Another will be at West Point, and a few more in USC, Pepperdine, UCLA, Loyola & Berkeley, Notre Dame, etc. They are all freaked DD is going to England, and ALL have expressed a desire to fly & visit her this fall!! LOL. Some are even checking flights and accommodations to travel in "groups" to visit her. As long as it does not interfere with DD's school demands...(there I go, being a MOM again!!). :confused3 Glad things are getting better. You continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

minniesota~Sanibel sounds SO lovely! I've heard the "shelling" there is spectacular...YES?!? Any sand dollars? These are some of my favorites. :)
God bless you for being such a loving and generous niece...I'm sure your Aunt treasures you and your kindness. :lovestruc Hope she continues to improve.

Nice to hear your DD has selected her HS...and everything is settling-down comfortably, as it should. She sounds like a thespian at heart. Hope she enjoys this aspect of her new school. Have fun perusing the plans of your upcoming Mother/daughter trip together!! :flower:

"relaxing" is a word synonymous with CRUISING, especially on the DCL! I can hardly wait for the beginning of June...and our launch from Los Angeles! I get excited just THINKING about it!!

Goofy's Muse~Another Wellesley-link!! :goodvibes I loved the memory of your DD playing "Jasmine" on the sofa--singing "a whole new world" (love that song!). :cloud9: Such precious moments. Sometimes the details are so clear, it's hard to believe they happened so long ago. The mind is kind...a place where "time" truly stands still. Your recollection inspires many of my own--and brings a smile to my face on this ordinary day. Thanks for sharing.

*P.S. Tell your son to savor the victory...this season has already begun in an UPSWING for the Bronx Bombers! (LOL). :cheer2:

DEBBIE!!~Tell DANNY I'm with him all the way!! :goodvibes AND...IF YOU HAVEN'T HEARD..."A DREAM is a WISH your HEART MAKES!!" SO...buy that lotto ticket and I'll be seeing you on the NEWS!! (Then in your suite @ AKL, DCL, etc!). :wizard:

TTFN...DF99 :wave2:

Howdy ho! You all make me giggle with your talk of choosing colleges. My son's biggest concern right now is using the potty like a big boy. :teeth:

Hope all are having a great time. I'm wishing I was at Disney instead of at work today. Time to go review my PS's again just to make sure I'm not missing something. 169 days 21 hrs. 21 mins. 19 secs.

Hugs to all!

MinniesotaGlad to hear that your Sanibel trip went so well and that your Aunt is doing better. Congrats on your DD's choice of school, that is never an easy decision. The choice worked out perfectly for my own DD and even in college, she can't resist taking theatre classes. She was lucky enough to get a scholarship for theatre, but she is in the technical end of it. She loves lighting design the best. DS is making a smooth transition from public to private catholic and he is thriving in that environment also.

DreamflightThat's funny to see you mention Southampton College. They had an amazing marine biology program and the school made DD's short list. We were very concerned after reading their stats on % of graduates. The number was very low and unless many transferred out after 2 years, it was a big concern for DH and myself.

I agree with your DD's assessment of Harvard. I have a few friends that work there and personally, I wouldn't encourage my daughters to attend.

I don't think anyone in my DD's high school group of friends went to the same college. They are pretty much spread out, but with cell phones and instant messaging, they are always in touch.

GoofysMuse :cake: Happy Birthday to your DD. Enjoy the 8th grade stuff. It's amazing how fast the high school years go by.

Looks like I have plenty of catching up to do! I only have time for a quick ??right now, though. Has anyone heard from floridafam? It seems to me it would be very close to her due date. Hope Mom (and baby...?) are doing well.

FLINT? WHat are they doing in FLINT? They can't really be in Flint.. they must be near flint... hmmmmmm I'll wave and see if anyone waves back! *running out to my veranda near cows south of Flint to see if anyone waves back!

While your father is in my area.... my father is in yours! Currently in the San Diego area visiting his wife's family. One of those towns near Oceanside, but I can't remember which one! (I remember Oceanside since I've been there with my friends... great beach!)

steveanddonna,

I'm here. We had a beautiful DD, Kona, on Monday. 9lbs 5oz. We are snuggling as I type this. :flower:
