We stayed at the Grand Floridian August 24-29th. We had a garden view room in the Conch Key building with a view of Narccoossee’s and a bit of the lagoon. This was a great quiet room with a location steps from the boat launch and a little stroll to Gasparilla Grill. We had a mix up at check in with our requests not being met. The had a room ready for us but it was smoking and I wanted non smoking. Because of this mess up we waited 3 hours for a room to be cleaned while being given the run around by the individual in charge of room assignments. Who eventually would just walk away when I headed to the desk. We could not go to the parks in the pouring rain without knowing we had a room to come back to, we were also very tired from an early flight that was so full of turbulence we could not get up. Eventually we were given 7122 in Conch Key original smoking room was 9510 I believe it was a top floor room. 7122 was nice nothing seemed to be worn or needing repair. Bathroom was clean and betting met our approval. We had a lovely mousekeeper Cecelia, who cleaned the room to perfection every day and would leave us treats from fresh flowers to towel animals every day.
We ate breakfast every morning at the resort 4 times at the grill and one trip to the grand Floridian café. Choices at the grill were limited but were things we liked. Breakfast platters and pancakes were our choices we also grabbed bagels to go one morning. Coffee was good better than we had expected. Lunch options at the grill were the usual kids fare as well as interesting sandwiches and salads we recommend the jerk chicken salad on a wrap it was great. We got the refillable mugs would prefer if they had the travel kind like the wilderness lodge does. Also many people consider these a souvenir so having it say more than grand adventures for kids and having it be functional would be nice. The fireworks from the marina were a great experience.
Transportation from the resort in august was lengthy if leaving the MK area. The boat to the poly and mk was great and we highly recommend using it especially on the way back from the mk during the fireworks. Monorail to EPCOT took quite a while, buses were shared with other MK resorts and it was almost an hour trip to downtown Disney. We saw many buses come and go before another MK area bus would arrive, we even optioned taking buses to other resorts just to try to get back.
The back of the resort area was always quiet and felt relaxing the second you entered the lobby it was every man for himself some days between resort hoppers and people doing the character dining it was loud many days hard to sit and enjoy the music with many princess running around you. The gift shop also had in our opinion a poor selection compared to the Polynesian.
All in all the resort was part of our total vacation experience but I do not think for the money we would be going back any time soon. We just did not feel that for the extra money we were spending we were getting anything out of it. We were not expecting something extra but we just did not feel the staff was up to par with the reputation of the resort. As our buses would pass the Wilderness Lodge I wished we had stayed there would have saved some money and gotten refurbished rooms. Nothing horrible about the Grand Floridian just think when it comes to the money we may go elsewhere.
Here are some photos of Conch Key and the Boat Launch hope to have more photos to add later today

O.K. people I am really getting nervous and thinking if I should switch over to the POLY ???????????????? :confused3

Woodygal - I don't think my dormer room had a connecting door.

Steffali - Are you staying concierge? When are you going? When I was getting a snack from Gasparilla, I overheard two women complaining about the temporary Captain Cook's and they were saying that they should have stayed at GF.

Lives4Disney - Yes, concierge is a very good thing :wave2:

We are only staying at the GF for 3 nights, but it's still alot of $$$. I am thinking that we should wait until they refurbish the resort. The other resorts have been refurbished around the monorail/Mk. :confused3

I have had the nastiest CMs at the Poly - ESPECIALLY Poly concierge. They are RUDE over there. Just lame and don't care about service (which is their profession, LOL) I wouldn't switch to the Poly.......CR maybe, but Poly - ick. ;)

- Glad you had a good trip & sorry it wasn't what you expected. I HATE when I have front desk check in problems. It just gets things off to a bad start. It is a guest's first impression of the resort, so they should make sure its a good one. I understand that regret feeling that you chose the wrong place, paid too much, wish you were somewhere else......Hate feeling that way. I second guess myself before every WDW trip and make all kinds of changes to try and avoid that.

I haven't had much interaction with the GF front desk but what I did left me cold. The GF front desk doesn't have a good rep. The couple of times I have needed their assistance, they have been duds and didn't do a thing to help, never mind that they said they would.

My husband wants to try the Poly....but I do not. Not to offend any Poly lovers, it is just my preference.

I have stayed off sight. I have stayed at the Beach Club Villas which I liked very much. I have also stayed at the Board Walk Villa's which the Villa itself was fine, but I like the pool better at the Beach Club then the Boardwalk. Then I finally got my husband to stay at the GF. It just makes me feel happy. It is so open and beautiful to me. It brings a smile to my face every time I pull up to it or view it from the monorail. :sunny:

I have stayed in a Garden View Room, a Lodge Tower Room, in Sugar Loaf Concierge and finally this last trip in RPC. As much as maybe mousekeeping wasn't perfect and some CM's didn't seem to have a brain, and the food offererings get "mundane" if you stay concierge alot...It still is the best place I have ever stayed.

As far as the standard room...it was the same as our standard Garden View Room, which I expected. Our room was a little worn, but the other places I stayed were worn worse. It was soooo nice walking up to the concierge desk and getting waited on right away even if they didn't always know what they were doing or always real warm. (I try to remember it must be hard to work in customer service and then I watch how some people that feel very entitled talk to them...I am more understanding.) Some were really great and some I thought might need to get a different job. As that thought was going through my head I reminded myself of standing in line at the lobby concierge this past Feb and it taking forever before I was even waited on and then getting a CM not knowing what they were doing with my kids whinning at me to hurry...and what is taking so long. In Feb 2006 it poured almost every morning we were there. I longed for Sugar Loaf. I remembered walking in the rain every morning to go get my coffee from Gasperilla's and coming back to our room telling my husband that SL was worth it just for the coffee. :rotfl2: (No, I don't like making my own in the room, the smell will wake up the kids and I like a little quiet time before they get up. ) I didn't realize I would miss the food (drink for me) offerings so much. Now that I tried RPC for our short weekend Anniversary trip....man I hope we can find a way to afford it every time. :thumbsup2

Is it worth the money. I really can't answer that for anyone but myself. My criteria is coffee without rain. :coffee: ;) My husbands criteria is not having a angry soaking wet wife because he wanted to save a few $ so he could spend it on something he wanted. :lmao: Really though it is a preference and what your personal budget really is. If it is going to put you in debt. Then no it is not near worth it imo, but if you can afford it....then the little bit is nice. I tell myself not to expect any extra attention or service even though I am paying for it and I seem to keep myself on an even keel. When I get going about the rooms needing updated and the mousekeeping could have done a better job in the bathroom then I remember the other places I have stayed and calm myself down. But the one thing I would have a hard time with is a dirty room. I have never experience that at the GF...Thank God and I feel sorry for Docsknotinn to have to experience it  If I did I would be very upset and probably have to rethink my lover affair with the GF. Until then I hope to visit the Poly for all the great things it has to offer and stick with the GF for the things I love about it. Wish me luck seeing who wins where we will stay next trip...my dh or me.

You will have a great trip. Each trip I have had a different experience with different things. I could make a very long list of Pros and Cons. See what happens on yours and take our experiences with a grain of salt and see what matches your personality. Wishing you much pixiedust:

DisneySue - I loved your post. :sunny: I just love the GF RPC - there is something special about it. I completely understand that feeling that the GF gives you and makes you smile. I feel the same thing when I am there or just think of the times we have had there. :) I have never had a dirty room, either, but with all the desperation WDW is having finding help I can understand it happening. :guilty:

My DH also loves the GF RPC. He did (like yours) really really want to try the Poly, so we did 3X. It was a major disappointment. Just did not measure up to the GF in so many ways. My DDs and I gave Poly concierge another try (DH didn't even want to) on a girls only trip and it was even worse than when he was with us! Though, to be fair, at the GF we have not had concierge CMs that didn't know what they were doing. We have always received the most wonderful over the top great service at the GF. I wasn't expecting that at the Poly, just CMs that could help me with last minute ADRs or suggest dining, leis for my DDs at check in (without me having to ask before we were sent on our way while they watched others receive them & the kids buckets, too) - just didn't feel special at the Poly. I was sad to hear Docs review & hope it isn't a sign that the desperation for great CMs has reached the GF concierge level.

We are doing RPC for Xmas - our first ever Xmas away from home - and I sure expect it to be awesome as usual. :goodvibes I had to bribe my kids to do Xmas at WDW......they love our own home Christmases, so it better be good!!! :wizard:

I continue to have a special place for the GF. I do think I would suggest avoiding the GF at least a few months to see if they re-group. Maybe it's just temporary cut backs or staffing problems. If not time will tell. I think for us the Dolphin was so good last year for the money I lean that way until perhaps they redo the rooms. Still it does not and never will have that "special" feel of the GF.

This will be our first trip staying Concierge anywhere so I am just hoping that there are no problems . We originally did have Poly CL booked but they do not have any wheelchair accessible rooms that are CL so we switched over to GF SL. Our choice was either that or Poly garden view ( That's the only view offered for the Wheelchair rooms :sad2: ) I am hoping that by January all will be well at the SL. pixiedust:

I guess I'm a little confused. Why would you think that you wouldn't have a room to come back to? How early was this and didn't they offer you a number to call and get your room information? I know that they aren't guaranteed until after 3pm, but if you arrive earlier, they will try to fill from a list of available rooms. We usually decide if it meets our needs and if not, we offer to wait for something better and go off to the parks, dining or downtown Disney.

Well, I am a very worrisome at times. We have always wanted to stay at the Grand. We have split up our stay between Longboat Key and WDW.
DH has been laughing at me all evening. He just wants to go with the idea that the Grand is just a place to sleep. That way if we are surprised....it will be because of all the pixie dust. It will be a while before we head back to WDW, I am guessing 4 or 5 years. It will be awesome...I just have to stop readinging these posts. ANXIETY!!!! UGH!!!!!

You will love it. It is a beautiful resort full of charm. I have had the BEST WDW times at the Grand Floridian and the NICEST CMs work there. (maybe not the front desk, LOL) but everywhere else. ;) Your DH has the right idea, though......don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed. Have a wonderful time!

That sounds nice. My house is very much more like the Wilderness Lodge, so anything GFish would look very out of place here, LOL. I just enjoy the GF atmosphere as a vacation break. Nice to visit, but I like coming home to my cozy & woodsy WL. (Now if I could only buy one of those teepee chandeliers at the WL!! - LOVE those  )
