The New and Improved Official Home of The Tagliarchy!

Hey everybody! Busy day. Two basketball games and one cheerleading (it's really a basketball game too, but DD-6 cheers). One down so far, two to go.

Geffric, thanks for the offer and to answer your question about the keyboard ports, I have no idea. The keyboard is built-in, so I'm very confused by your question.<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_6_2.gif' border=0></a> I got a wireless rechargeable mouse because I seriously doubt that I will ever get use to sliding my finger around on the tiny pad. Anyway, I wrapped it as soon as I got home because it is for DH for Christmas. We will all use it, but he's the one who wants it so badly so to justify the purchase, I'm making it a surprise Christmas gift. We needed the tax deduction this year too.

Ohanafamily, you are a very kind and helpful human being and I appreciate all you have told me and tried my best to absorbe and apply what I have learned from you. You still make my head spin <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_1_106.gif' border=0></a> with your techie talk. I guess because you are kind of like an authority figure here, I feel somewhat intimidated by you and I'm afraid you will fuss at me and tell me I should've gotten the Dell. I got the HPZE4560US at Circuit City. You can probably look up the particulars at their site. I got the 2 year plan which does cover the screen, but does not cover accidental damage.:( DH is not going to be allowed to take it around with him.<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_9_4.gif' border=0></a> Anyway, I decided we will get a new desktop next year, so I think it will be fine. I hope. Go ahead and tell me what you think though. What's done is done, and it's done and wrapped.

I've been checking the forecast for WDW next week, looks like low 70's which is great and in fact my favorite weather, but I don't know if the kids will get to swim much.<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/18/18_4_100.gif' border=0></a> It's so cold and dreary here, <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/16/16_6_9.gif' border=0></a>I can't wait to go!

How are you guys up in the northeast sector doing? A little of this<a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/16/16_6_17.gif' border=0></a> and this <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/1052.gif' border=0></a>?? Wish we'd get snow, we just get yucky cold misty windy no sun for days and days weather.

Have a great weekend everybody!

llebrekniT, Authority figure? WOW, I feel so important, more like Full of it figure... Suriosly, I looked up the specs, and you did great!!!!!! $1299 with a $100 mail in rebate, and hopefully it was a little cheaper at CC. I am not sure what software it comes preloaded with, and you might want to let me know if you have problems transferring files from one computer to another...You will be so glad you got the 15" screen instead of the 14.1" screen. I don't use AMD processors, but lots of people do without a problem. I don't know if you bought an Accesspoint, or a Broadband Router yet, Linksys makes either of these for $99 (at compusa). If I recall, you have a Cable Modem so you will probably want the Broadband Router. The computer you got should work with either 802.11B (10 mbps-Mega Bits per second) or 802.11G (54 mbps) there is another manufacterer that makes these and offers a 108 mbps (802.11G) router, but your laptop won't work with the high speed mode on it. The one to buy is the 802.11G

ohana: It's a cute story on KP and should be on again sometime over the weekend

the rose quartz does sound pretty

Good afternoon everyone!!

I'm at work today :( . One good thing...Christmas Bonus was waiting for me when I got here :hyper: . I think I can pick up the last couple of Christmas gifts I have left to buy now.

cheeringmom, I'm glad everyone is safe! Sounds like a long, cold night!

Have a great day everyone!

Ok, we have a router already, so I guess we can hook it to that. Do I need to call the cable company and see what they recommend? It already has that 802.11G thing going on. The way I understand it I just need to buy the thing to be able to connect to the internet without wires. And yes, I also got $150 rebate through CC. The confusing thing for me now is connecting to the internet, I don't know what that thing I need is called. Is it an airport?

Who, if not you, would be the authority figure here? The way I see it you are sort of like the boss and BichonBarb is like the office manager that kind of gets in the bosses face every now and again. Then there's RRBB, the bosses wife, which means she's actually the brains of this outfit. Right?::yes::

llebrekniT, RRBB has a headache, and you just made her smile, thanks...

Seriously, does that mean that Nephosaurus is the geeky office guy that is always making sure everyone has the supplies they need and trying to help? I guess Tigger Fans! is like the sales force leader... I had better stop while I am behind.....

OK, the router from the Cable company probably doesn't have the 802.11G thingy built into it, and it is probably "Always On" (which means you don't have to login whenever you go to the internet...If you have an 802.11G thingy built in, you will need to find out how it is set up, and configure the computer to match. If it doesn't have the 802.11G thingy built into it, you will need a hub/switch ($35+) and an AccesPoint ($99+), and some AccessPoints come with 4 port switches built into them, and so do some routers....

Your Router should be plugged into the wall (both power and the network connection), and the output should go to the Hub/switch( unless they are already built in to it). in the hub/switch you plug the Accesspoint. the booklet that comes with the accesspoint will tell you how to configure the laptop, but chances are that it will work straight out of the box...You might need to call your cable company, but if you run into problems the settings are all in the old computer...

There are a couple of security concerns you might want to think about; #1, since it is a Cable modem that is always on (connected to the internet) you might want to get a Firewall (you can buy an inexpensive one for about $100) but you might be able to configure your router to perform some of that...Let me know the make and model# and I may be able to find the info on it; it could be maintained by the Cable company, so you may not be able to use that functionality. There are even a couple of firewalls that have a printer port on them so you can share your printer!!!!!

The next concern is other people "hooking in" to your wireless network. If you want to enable the security, it is in the Accesspoint manual. I generally don't mind if my neighbor wants into my wireless network, but then again, there is enough space between our houses that they really can't get a good signal.

Windows XP has a built-in firewall (does very little, but will keep an honest hacker honest...) I would at the very least make sure that is enabled.

OK, this makes my head spin too...If your hubby has a problem, send me a PM and I might just be able to help (I have worked Tech Support lines before, I try not to get too technical, but sometimes I get a little techno-speak...I try to talk English.

OK, now I am going to look for that book for the quote for CourtasanSatine

:bounce:

Boy, I tell you ohanafamily, that explanation had my head spinning. And I have a background in computers/software. Was that your simplified version? I bet llebrekniT's head is
violent-smiley-011.gif
with all that techno mumbo-jumbo. Isn't there any easier explanation you can give?

playoff update

31-7(my alma marter's favor) at top of 4th quarter. If we win it's stare time!

*peeking around the door and waving* Hi everyone! I'm pretty new to the DIS. Kind of lost, looking for a new home. Tried out disABILITIES, but we aren't close enough to our trip yet for me to have enough to discuss there. Tried out the debate board, which was fun for about a day, then I realized it was the same people saying the same things over and over. *sigh* THIS looks like a fun place though. I haven't been around long enough for the tag fairy to even know I exist, but I do aspire to have a funny, colorful little tag one day!:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc I've brought some Godiva ice cream! Chocolate Raspberry Truffle. It's um....got a few bites out if it:blush: but I filled in the empty spaces with $20s!!! Whatdaya say? Think I can hang out here for awhile? I've got some holiday peppermint coffe to share!

~Josie~

:wave2: Hi myjulybabes. Welcome to the Tagliarchy. There's always room for one more around here. And you seemed to have picked up quickly that we like to share all kinds of yummy offerings with each other, especially the TAG FAIRY. And the
dollar.gif
you're leaving behind certainly doesn't hurt when it comes to attracting the TAG FAIRY either. The goodies you've brought sure do sound good.
lick.gif
. Thanks. I think I'll save my portion for dessert, especially since we're just about to sit down to dinner.

*does state playoff happy dance*

We won and we're going to the TX state champsion!!!!

Ahhhh, yes, I have poked around long enough to know what the Tag Fairy likes! And besides, I always like sharing yummy treats with my friends!

OK, I tried to be concise and give instructions a certain person could print, and as they were looking at the boxes say "Oh, that is whet he meant. with deferance to RRBB, I will make it simpler; but It would help me to know the model numbers of your "Box that has the internet cable" coming into it. How does this sound...

There is a wire coming from the wall to a box. This box should also be plugged into the wall. There should also be a wire from this box to your old computer. It may have a few more holes for more wires to come out of it; if it doesn't you will need another dewhickey to give you more connections.

One wire from the Dewhickey goes to the old computer, and another goes to the radio thingy. Your laptop will probably work once you plug in the radio thingy, but may need to have some settings changed.

If you want added security from bad people, you need a blocker. the blocker should be wired between the box and the dewhicky.

I will gladly help you with the settings.
The "BOX" is called a Cable modem, and you should have one of those already.
The "BLOCKER" is called a firewall, and if you buy one, I would suggests getting one that you can plug "that thing that puts what you write onto paper" (commonly called a printer) into; it costs a few dollars more, but gives you a lot of freedom (without plugging "that thing that puts what you write onto paper" directly into your laptop.
The "DEWHICKEY" is called either a hub or an Ethernet switch. It just gives you more holes to plug computers into, and you will only need it if the other stuff doesn't already have the extra holes for wires.
The "RADIO THINGY" is called an 802.11G AccesPoint at the computer store. they are designed to work out of the box with lots of different computers, but you may have to change a few settings. I will be glad to help.

Is this more understandable?
