Harry was attending a PRIVATE house party....the awful, snooping British press that have no respect at all for the Royal family's privacy took a photo of him going in or out...not sure which...At the same party a friend of his was dressed as the Queen (Harry's Grandmother) and was reading speeches that she actually hade made in the past. It was a typical young adult party.

As was mentioned here...Osama, Marth Stewart etc were all big comstumes at Halloween...we laugh at that?

I say forget about it...he has apologized...enough said.

There is a significant difference here.

And how do we know that Harry wasn't making fun of the nazis??

DawnCt1, Mel Brooks was mentioned on the page 3 regarding The Producers, written in 1968 and his making light of Nazi's in it's content. (I did find out his planning a Broadway production of Young Frankenstien in my quick reseach of the man, so yay!)

I know. I posted it. I was asking RubySlippers to explain her comment.

I do not think sending him to Auschwitz for the 60th anniversary is a good idea. If he went, it would turn somewhat into a media frenzy. The press follows him everywhere. It would take the focus off the main reason for having a memorial that day. It should be a solemn day to remember not a press event for Prince Harry.
QUOTE]

I agree with this. His going will turn the day into a circus. The media will not be focusing on the concentration camp and what happened there, they will be trying to get the scoop on Harry.

I believe I saw somewhere that media will NOT be permitted.

I don't think it was in good taste. But enough press on it already.
It was a costume party.

Dawn, you misinterpret.

Mel Brooks isn't scary. Nazis are. Brooks makes fun of Nazis. He also makes fun of Torquemada -- of Inquisition fame -- another "friend" of the Jews.

Sorry DawnC, after re-reading your comment, I realize I'd not had enough coffee to activate my sarasm meter. I think you may have been misinterpreted by more than just I. If I am again mistaken, I do apologize.

He also makes fun of the Jews and of Hitler: 'Jews in space' and 'Hitler on Ice'.

But back to the topic: Yes, IMHO he should be forced to apologize publicly, and he should visit Auschwitz or Dachau. I've been to Dachau in my youth when I attended a week-long fieldtrip with the topic Fascism and Germany in the years '33-'45. Belive, after having seen the atrocities of a Concentration Camp, you won't make jokes about it, nor dress up as a Nazi for a costume party.
And taking into account that his lifestyle is more or less funded by the British public, this public deserves an apology!!!

While I certainly agree that the Royal Family is Britain's largest welfare family, I don't think that public humiliation and public groveling is necessary. Some would demand public flogging. Enough is enough. It's over, the end.

I've been to Dachau. I've been to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. That doesn't mean jokes about Nazis, Jews or concentration camps are off limits to me. But as a member of the royal family, he's much more in the public eye than I ever will be.

The guy made a mistake in judgment and is making up for it, IMO. Let it go. If he hadn't apologized and wasn't going to visit a concentration camp to make up for his faux pas, different story. But he is.

I suppose I don't, but Mel Brooks I am sure of.

Having grown up with Concentration Camp survivors, having heard their stories and having seen them not being able to tell their stories, I can tell you that this is not a joking matter.

Let it drop?

No.

Never.

Never again.

When I first heard this I was hoping that he wasn't a dim-witted heir, like one of the heirs from The Romanov Dynasty. You know how some of that inbreeding creates idiots. :earseek:

Now, I just feel like maybe he just made a really stupid mistake. Someone who is in the public eye really needs to sensor themself better. :D

Then perhaps the stocks in the center of London or a public flogging will asuage your outrage.

Okay. Works for me.

This is just one of those topics where the one side will never understand the other.

Ah well. That's what makes the world such an interesting place, I suppose.

I agree. never again.

punishment, no. education, of course. it would behoove the prince to emulate his late mother.

hmmm...just goes to show you how perspectives can differ. i also know a few holocaust survivors. if someone came to my house dressed as hitler for a costume party, i wouldn't think a second thing of it. do i think the holocaust is a joke? of course not. do i think it's a big deal if someone chooses to dress as a nazi officer for a costume party? nope.

That's a shame.

why?

if the person just dressed up as a nazi (obviously i WOULD have a problem if they did so because they thought nazis were good or something), why is that such a big deal?

if you dress up as a vampire does that mean that you think people should go around sucking people's blood or maming people (think vlad the impaler)? of course not.

Why is that a shame? I'm perplexed. I wouldn't think anything of it either. Nor would I think anything of a person dressing up as Joseph Stalin for a costume party. It's not an endorsement of Nazi or Stalinist principles to do so. Do you just feel it's not appropriate to dress up as any horrible historical figures for a costume party? Or is this particular to Nazis? I'm honestly curious.

Again, this is an issue that you either are on one side of or the other.

I refer you all once again to Philip Roth's The Plot Against America.

And someone dressing like a nazi should bug you big time.
