June 27, 2009: Day Five, Part Three – California Grill

Very carefully we carried our crystal castle back to our room. We were even scared to breathe on it. We started to get ready for our 8:05 ADR at California Grill.
This was our fancy meal of the trip, since it was 2 table service credits. We decided to leave the GF a little early so we could walk around the Contemporary a bit before checking in.

Camera556.jpg

A picture on the GF’s main staircase.

We monorailed over with no problems and checked out some of the gift shops. I saw a lot of cute things for the kitchen in one of the stores, but I didn’t feel like buying anything and carrying it all around. We roamed a bit more and discussed staying at the Contemporary one day, especially since they recently renovated the rooms.

At around 8:00 PM, we headed to the check in desk on the second floor. The CM took our name, and told us to wait by the elevator where a Cali Grill CM would be arriving shortly to take us up to the restaurant on the top floor. We felt very important having to be escorted. 

Soon, we were on the elevator and the CM explained to us that if we finished our meal before Wishes, we were welcomed to come back and watch from the observation deck, all we had to do was show our receipt. Once on the top floor, we were told it would be a few more minutes and they would buzz us once our table was ready. We took the opportunity to look around the restaurant and observation deck.

What you see when you walk off the elevator.

Camera559.jpg

The food smelled amazing and I was excited to try it!

We moseyed on over to 1 of the 2 observation decks and had some great views of the MK.

Continued in next post...

Our buzzer rang and we were brought to our table, I hoped we would be near a window, and low and behold....

Camera578.jpg

We were!

They even decked out our table with pixie dust

Camera577.jpg

Camera576.jpg

Our server came and ran down the list of specials and specialties of the restaurant. I remember being really overwhelmed because there were so many choices.

We both ended up ordering the Oak Fired Filet of beef which came mashed potatoes. This was highly recommended by our server.

While waiting we munched on bread and took in the beautiful sights.

Camera579.jpg

Camera581.jpg

Patiently awaiting food.

Camera582.jpg

Bustling restaurant

Finally, our food came and was piping hot!
Camera580.jpg

Mmmm!

We both took a bite and loved the filet and mashed potatoes. We decided to take our time and enjoy every bite. The more time we wasted eating, the better chances we had to see Wishes. I highly recommend Cali Grill to anyone who wants to eat a nicer place, the food is very very good. Our server was very attentive and took great care to refill our orders and check up on us.

She even offered to take our picture.

Camera585.jpg

It was time to order dessert and I was excited to see their choices, I mean if their main course was that good, I couldn’t imagine what dessert would taste like!

I honestly don’t remember what we ordered, but I have pictures of it. One looks like Crème Brulee and the other looks like some kind of chocolate cake and ice cream.
Camera586.jpg

Camera587.jpg

Whatever it was, it was delicious and we ate up almost every single bite. We laughed at how much dessert we had eaten on this trip and we completely blamed the Dining Plan. We also laughed at how much we were eating on this entire trip. It seemed like between the concierge at the GF and the dining plan, all we were doing was eating eating eating!!

While we ate our dessert, the Electrical Water Pageant was going on outside. We took some pictures, but they came out a bit blurry.

Camera591.jpg

Camera590.jpg

Wishes is coming up soon!

We slowly ate our dessert and soon, the lights dimmed, and my favorite soundtrack came on! You saw a lot of people head for the observation deck, but our seats were great.

It was so neat and romantic to watch Wishes from the top of the Contemporary. You see it in a whole new way. It was such a great way to end a great non park day! If you can afford to have a later dinner, I suggest eating at the Cali Grill and trying to catch Wishes, it is truly an amazing experience for anyone who is a fan of the show!

Finally full, we paid for our meal, using our dining plan of course, and headed back out to the observation deck to get some nighttime MK views.

Camera599.jpg

Camera603.jpg

We walked over to the other observation deck as well, but it didn’t have as nice of views as the other one!

We were so incredibly full and tired from our “break” day, we decided to go right back to the GF and get some rest since tomorrow was our Animal Kingdom day.

We found a hoard of people in the monorail station and had to wait in line in order to get on. It felt like we were waiting forever. We decided to take a seat right in line because we were waiting so long. We then realized what the hold up was once they announced the Monorail coral was having difficulties and was holding up all the other monorails. Not to long after that announcement, we saw monorail coral slowly, and I mean slowly, make it’s way into the monorail station, there were people on board, and I think they were let off in order to board another monorail.

Finally, a full functioning monorail arrived and we boarded along with the hoards of other people. I am not sure, but I think we had to stand.
Finally back at the GF, we got ready for bed, put on the TV to watch some coverage of Michael Jackson’s passing, and fell asleep with visions of Animal Kingdom in our head.

Up Next: Animal Kingdom—Will I ever see the ending of Dinosaur??

Thanks for the review and pics of California Grill. It's my favorite restaurant! :lovestruc

By the way, I love your dress. It's so cute! :goodvibes

I never was a fan of the Contemporary till we were there this summer. I love it now and the location can't be beat! I hope we get to the Cali grille someday! What a fantastic and special evening..

Cali Grill is DBF's dream restaurant! Your meal looked delicious. Glad you guys had fun at DTD, too. I think we went there 3 times over the course of our 5 day trip! Such a lovely money pit!

The non-park day was great - and I would say relaxing... Cali Grill looks great - going to have to put that on my list for the next trip which is currently planned for November, not sure we will make it that long - will probably throw a short trip in there to keep up happy!

Can't wait for more!

You know, I grew to love the Contemporary during this trip. It seemed like we were always there for something! It is just a buzz of activity there. I would love to stay there one day! You must eat at CG one day, it is definitely one of Disney's finest! :goodvibes

Looking back--it was pretty relaxing, it didn't feel like it at the time only because we were so beat from our other jam packed days! :rotfl: Whenever you decide to go to Disney--definitely splurge and go to Cali Grill! :goodvibes

June 28, 2009: Day Six, Part One – Lions & Tigers & Goofy, Oh My!

We were up at about 8:00 AM the next morning. We followed our same routine of grabbing some breakfast in the lobby. They had the usual cereal and Danishes. We checked the weather before heading out and it said it was going to be in the mid-90’s. What a great day to visit Disney’s hottest park. Pins and ears on, we walked the long walk to our car which was in the GF self-park parking lot.

In no time at all, we were at the gates to AK. It was about 9:15 once we arrived, which was still pretty good time. The lines weren’t too horrible, but like I mentioned, we have a knack for finding the shortest line. Soon, we were in AK, and the temperature rose about 30 degrees.

Of course, like every other person in the park, we headed toward Everest to grab ourselves a Fastpass. Oh.my.goodness was it HOT on this day! It seemed we were drenched in sweat by the time we arrived at the FP machines..I know not a pretty sight, but this is Disney in June! We were happy to see a FP return time of about 10:05.

Looking at the time, if we walked very quickly, we could make the 9:40 show of Festival of the Lion King. A definite must see show at AK!

As we made our way through Camp Mickey and Minnie, we discussed getting a FP for Kali River Rapids next since it was so hot out! Luckily, once we arrived at the theater, they were letting people in and we got some nice top seats in either the Warthog section or the Lion section. DH and I cannot remember where we sat, but where it was, it was a great seat, and it felt so good in that theater!

Soon, one of the best shows on Disney property started, I get chills every time!

I love how they get the kids involved in this show, it is so cute!

Low and behold, after the show, we were ready to get another FP and then ride Everest!

On the way, we took some Photopass pictures before we got too sweaty!

Image143.jpg

AK is so pretty!

Image145.jpg

Image147.jpg

We got our FPs for Kali and walked toward Everest, but not before waiting to take our picture in front of Disney’s newest mountain.

The photographer that took those pictures was great! He took so many and was really fun. As we were taking our pictures, another honeymoon couple was waiting to get theirs taken, we said congratulations to them as we walked toward the FP return line to EE.

We basically walked right on and soon we were strapped in and ready to go. Love, love, love this ride! The backward feeling is so weird and I don’t think Mr. Yeti was working at full force on this day. Does anyone know if they were going to ever get it back to normal working form again?

Since Kali River Rapids is in Asia and that is where we already were, we decided to walk through Maharajah Jungle Trek, AKA The Tigers to kill some time in between our FP time. You know DH and I are obsessed with palm trees? Well, the same applies to all things Tigers. Don’t ask, but I think if we could get our hands on a baby tiger, we would.

Along our Trek, we saw many animals...for your viewing pleasure...
Camera620.jpg

Camera622.jpg

Ew. Not a fan of bats, but somehow, I ended up in the bat house, and very quickly walked through, probably without looking twice.

Camera623.jpg

We were very disappointed that you really couldn’t see many tigers today. So we decided to definitely come back later in the day and see if more were out.

We continued on our rugged hike.

Camera628.jpg

Cute.

Camera629.jpg

Camera633.jpg

Camera634.jpg

I wish we would have ridden those around the park, AK is huge!
With our hike behind us, it was now time to go cool down on Kali River Rapids. We flashed our FPs to the CM and she let us in. I swear it takes forever to walk through the queue for this ride. On the way, a little girl was pointing at me and telling her mom, “Look Mommy, she looks like a bride!” The mom laughed and I explained that we were on our honeymoon and I was a bride a couple days ago. The mom then had to explain what a honeymoon is and how it is a special trip that new husbands and wives take after the wedding. It was really cute because the little girl kept talking and asking us questions about our wedding and Disney.

We ended up not being on a raft with the little girl, which was probably a good thing because she would have talked our ears off the entire time. Instead we were in a raft with a bunch of people who had no clue what to do! I think the CMs had to stop the rafts to make sure they were all buckled in. They were definitely from a different country. As we went along we surprisingly didn’t get that wet, but the guy across from us, got it the worst. He was absolutely dripping wet! The little wet that we did get was a welcomed relief from the heat, though, and it was just what we needed.

By this time, we decided to head over to Dino Land USA and get a FP for Dinosaur. Then in the meantime, we would grab lunch at Restaurantasaurus. With a Dino FP in hand, it was still pretty early, so it wasn’t too packed in the restaurant for lunch. DH got a bacon cheeseburger and carrot cake and I got chicken nuggets (surprise, surprise) with carrot cake. Everything was Disney-good, but I know we couldn’t finish off both carrot cakes...the Disney plan is just too much, especially with dessert!

Continued in next post...

After lunch, we had some time to kill before our Dinosaur return time, so we decided walked around Dinoland a bit. We didn’t get very far because then we saw these guys, so we got in line for a picture.

Camera636.jpg

As we were waiting, you could see the clouds starting to roll in, and all of a sudden it starting coming down like a sheet of water! Goofy and Pluto ran for cover and the CM told everyone that they would be back under the canopy of the restaurant in about 5 minutes. We followed some people over to the restaurant that we just ate at and waited patiently for our favorite dogs to return. The water was coming down so hard that it was making waterfalls off of the shingles of the roof. It was insane.

We waited much longer for Pluto and Goofy to arrive, and a lot of people got restless and just ended up leaving, others went into the restaurant to eat to get out of the rain. There weren’t too many of us waiting and finally they came back!

Always a fun time with those two! We said our goodbyes and headed off to Dinosaur, where I was determined to keep my eyes open throughout the entire thing!

To Be Continued...

Up Next: Will I see Dinosaur in its entirety? And find out which Disney character is a fan of Lady Gaga.
