Day 6 - Part 7
It seemed like our time with Cherie and her family flew by as we talked in Kidani’s Community Hall and the kids played games. But soon it was time to head back to the room to get cleaned up and get ready for our dinner at Boma. We’d be meeting Judy’s PChef director there, and her husband and two daughters. Her director and husband made an appearance in my PTR, in the “Flashback PChef TR” chapters on Vienna, and I referred to them as “L” and “B2”, so I’ll stick with that. Their family also loves Boma, and like us, have eaten there several times.
Back in the suite, while I was waiting for everyone to get ready I had to take another giraffe picture, since this one was demonstrating what they would do if somebody yelled “duck!”.
As we left the hotel I thought that I’d better take a picture of the lobby since I hadn’t taken any yet. (On this trip anyway.)
I can’t remember if we walked to Jambo House or caught a park bus, but regardless, we were there a few minutes later and I had to take the obligatory photo of the Jambo House lobby. I love those chandeliers that resemble African warrior shields.
We met L, B2, and family in the waiting area outside of Boma and I took a picture of the restaurant that already had me salivating.
Our table ended up being near where the server is in right side of the picture above…either the table he’s waiting on or the one to its left.
Then I walked up to the Victoria Falls Lounge to take another picture of the restaurant below.
Soon we were called to be seated. Our server was Abdel, and we asked him what soups were on the buffet this evening. He listed them for us and I was disappointed because carrot ginger was not being served this evening, again. (It wasn’t on the menu when we visited last year either.) Apparently I looked disappointed because he asked, “What were you hoping for sir?” I told him “the carrot ginger”, and L chimed-in that she always liked their butternut squash soup. He said he would mention it to the chef in order to see if one of them could be made for us.
Anyway, drink orders were placed and yada yada yada…we all dispersed to different areas of the buffet. Well, at least one of us hung back for a few minutes to keep an eye on cameras, purses, and other valuables. You know you can’t be too careful.
My first stop was the soup station, despite my disappointment that carrot ginger wasn’t being offered on this particular evening. I came back with three, and assembled them into a “hidden mickey” for a picture.
Unfortunately, I didn’t take any notes so I have to guess at what these are. I think the one at the top right is a mushroom soup, the top left is black-eyed pea something or other, and I have no idea what the bottom one is.
Judy ordered a wine flight, and it arrived right on schedule.
I still had a couple more soups to try from the buffet. I’ve said before that I love Boma’s soups and could easily make a meal just from that section of the buffet alone. Sorry that I can’t tell you what they were -- I wish I could remember.
At one point Abdel announced to our table that the chef had been able to make some butternut squash soup for us and delivered us a few bowls of it. The soup on the right in the picture above may be butternut squash, or the one with my first plate of food below, or maybe both, I have no idea! Apparently, the only thing I was focused on right then was shoveling soup into my piehole.
I had forgotten how sweet the butternut squash soup is. It’s good, but tastes like it should be served for dessert.
Like I said above, I eventually got my first “real” plate of food and somehow another soup. I’m not sure what I have on the plate other than couscous in the upper right, and fufu in the lower right.
Being done with the soups, it was finally time to hit the meat station of the buffet. But guess what…when I returned, Abdel had brought out some carrot ginger soup that the chef had made especially for us! What is this, my sixth or seventh bowl of soup?
It looks like I got some chicken and ribs, there’s salmon in the center of the plate (it’s really good), maybe some saffron rice, and I always forget what those round things are.
Oh, I should mention how much L loved the carrot ginger soup. She’d never had it before and was now raving over it. Judy mentioned that we had the recipe at home, and that we’d received it after our first visit to Boma back in 2001. Most of the Disney recipes are available online now, on allears.net, but when we were there in 2001 Judy said to our server that she was going to have to buy an African cookbook because everything was so good. Our server told us to jot down any dishes we liked, with our e-mail address, and the chef would send us the recipe. I sent L the recipe after we returned home and she’s made it several times.
During dinner we talked with L and B2 about their day. They’d had quite an exasperating time. They’d gone to Typhoon Lagoon with the passes they’d received from PChef, but they forgot one of their bags in their hotel room. The missing bag contained the swimsuit of their youngest daughter. L looked for a replacement in the Typhoon Lagoon gift shop but didn’t find anything suitable (pun intended), so B2 took a bus back to the Grand Floridian to retrieve the bag. The poor guy spent three hours on the buses, and forgot to take a cell phone with him so couldn’t give them an update on where he was. When he finally returned, he rode three rides before the afternoon storms hit and closed the park. Then, before exiting the park he thought he’d treat himself to a caramel sundae since he’s a big caramel fan. He got in a really long line and when he finally got to the window to order, they were out of caramel. So, they’d had one of “those” days at WDW.
Here’s a picture of Judy’s dessert plate.
Before I moved on to desserts I wanted to sample some items from the salads area. I know that salads are usually what you eat first in a meal, but hey, I was on vacation. Here I have hummus and pita bread, pasta salad (which ROCKS believe it or not, one of my favorite things from the meal), kool slaai, Moroccan seafood salad (?), and avocado/grapefruit/papaya salad.
I finally decided to end the meal and took a trip to retrieve some dessert items.
I took a picture of B2, L, and family. I’ve blurred the girls’ faces since I never exactly mentioned that these might end up on the internet.
Their youngest daughter was really cute listening to James at the end of the table. He was telling stories and giving the impression that he had the world all figured out, and somehow he had her rapt attention. This picture missed the moment by a second or two, as somehow they realized that they were being watched.
Before we left, we asked Abdel to take a picture of our group.
We left the restaurant at about 9 pm and L’s family walked back to Kidani with us to see our suite. They were duly impressed. They also liked our gift shop better than the one at the Grand Floridian -- they bought a ½ gallon of milk for $2.95, which is what they had been paying for a pint over there.
After they left, we wound-down by watching a little TV and getting ready for bed. It had been another fun day at Disney World and tomorrow we were planning an Epcot day.
