Except that she WILL care. Eventually. When we look back fondly over the beautiful baby albums I made for my children. With photos and journaling of every moment of their first few years.

So my first child has a baby book.
We lost Max's in a move.
Never even pretended to start one for Sophia.

But I started scrapbooking when Sophia was a baby, so... she has a scrapbook (or 14) from about 6 months on... Max from 3 on... Ryan, not so much. He was already a camera avoider by the time I started scraping.

I have not done much of late... but I DO plan to. At some point...

And hers is a pocket folder with a handful of pictures in it. That other people took, and gave to me because they felt sorry for my baby. And bits of paper napkins with illegible crayon notes scribbled on.

Hey cousin!!!!

Don't worry. It's the thought that counts, right?? :teeth:

Kimmie...I spent all morning reading this and it's NOT DONE???? LOL!

great report...Im really enjoying it! Add me to the list of people waiting! :teeth:

You have a beautiful family...love the pics!

I just found this TR! It has been great - I haven't read it all yet. I only have 2 children and my second is going to wonder where all his pics are. The good news is I have boxes of film that I just haven't developed :goodvibes I figure they will make great graduation gifts for my kids.

Executive decision made.

Abort the hair cutting magical mission, in favor of Tomorrowland.

Which was on our side of the park. Except that once we got around the congestion in Town Square (I remembered!) we made it fairly easily up Main Street and we opted for Frontierland instead. Because getting wet first thing in the morning gives us more time to dry.

I never said we were logical.

Splash Mountain, here we come!

Except Doug needed to stop for coffee. I allowed for this, since he would be sitting out of Splash while I rode it with Conor and Piper. Not that this was a sacrifice, mind you. He didn’t really want to go on it, anyway.

Which probably accounts for why Piper decided that she didn’t want to go, either. She’s Daddy’s girl. Happy to hang out with him instead of racing off in search of adventure. And we both fervently hope that this behavior will continue on through her teenage years. If you know what I mean.

So my thrill seeking boy (who knew? My children continually surprise and amaze me. I would have expected Piper to be all about the adrenaline and for Conor to be less so. The best part about being their mom is knowing them best of anyone in the world, and STILL being surprised by them, every day.) and I zoom through Splash. We didn’t bother with FastPasses here, either. No need.

Why does Splash Mountain smell like a wet dog? Surely there must be a trick of Imagineering that could help out this stinky situation. Or, perhaps it’s part of the theming. The story is full of animals, after all. In which case, bravo to the Imagineers for going the extra mile for that authentic detail.

We emerge from the mountain victorious, only mildly damp, and smelling like wet dogs. Mission accomplished. I had forgotten how LONG that ride is. That there’s a whole ‘nother part after the big drop. That there’s a littler drop earlier in the ride. So those were all bonuses, along with the added smell-o-vision ambiance.

Next stop, Pirates! ARRRRRRRR.

I had worked the POC into our pre-trip supersecretsurprise brainwashing. To make sure the kids would want to go on it, and that they would LOVE it. Bought the entire 5-disc series of Classic Disney, which happened to include the soundtrack to the Pirates ride. Yo ho!

I had played the song on more than one (dozen) occasion and told the kidlets all about how totally cool it is. Playing up the “it’s a little spooky/scary, but FUN spooky/scary. None of it is real, so you can laugh at how spooky/scary it is.”

It didn’t really work.

Actually it was ok. Nobody resisted going on it. I don’t know why this is. Maybe it’s because we always try think what might frighten a child, and prepare them for it. And never ever tell them it won’t be scary if we know that it will. Or might. And never ever EVER “make” them do something when we know it will scare the bejeepers out of them. Let, sure. I’d let them do something that I knew would be scary, if they had been fairly warned and still wanted to.

Sydney was probably too little realize that it was “supposed” to scare her. She just snuggled in next to me, and stared around, wide-eyed. There may have been thumb-sucking.

Conor, on the other side of me, took it all in with an eye to the audio-animatronics. Cause and effect, benember? He wanted to “figure it out.” How they did it.

In the row in front of me, Piper was scared.

The dark, the spooky music, the fire, the dirty pirates. Too much for her. She has an amazing imagination, and it began taking her places she didn’t want to go. Luckily, she is also very strong and brave. So she simply squeezed. Squeezed her eyes shut, squeezed as close as she could to her daddy, squeezed his arm tightly with both of hers.

And she made it through just fine. When we emerged once more into Adventureland, she informed us that she did NOT like that ride and she was NOT going on it again and she did NOT like pirates.

And we won’t make her. But at that time she was four. Now she’s approaching six, and wants to face it for our next trip. And even if her imagination runs away with her again, I am confident that she knows how to cope.

Squeeze.

Kimmie!!!

I think I may have mentioned she's a girl after my own heart, right?? Not the not like POC so much. The knowing her own mind part!!! :teeth:

Kimmie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love this logic!!! It's great logic for kids but not so great for those of us with 'muss your do' issues. Hmmmm...this gives me something to think about before the trip. What shall we do???

Great chapter, meanie.

Love, Love your trip report and your family...thanks for sharing! My DD4 bailed out of Haunted Mansion and Dinosaur but wants to go on the next trip when she will be six. We might even might it over to other Lands this time for the kinda/sorta/pretend scary pirates and a splash of dog smells.

Hello! I have been quieting reading your TR for a couple of weeks, now - and I'll add myself to the host of readers who LOVE your writing style and think your children are absolutely adorable!

We are going on our first family trip to WDW in early November. Our twin boys will just have turned 8. Our boys were born extremely prematurely (>3months!), and one son has cerebral palsy. He uses a walker/wheelchair and is age-appropriate verbally and cognitively. It's been a tough road with their various medical issues and we were waiting for life to settle. To the extent it ever does/will.

It's a surprise for the boys so far and I LOVED the description of how your kids reacted to "the news." I won't be able to keep it a secret until the plane, but I do enjoy being "in the know" while they moan about how "we'll never save enough money to go to WDW." Well boys, we've been saving and we're a-going!!!

Has anyone ever published a book of these trip reports? Maybe you and some of the other terrific writers should compile one!

Looking forward to the next instalment,
Twinmum

Never thought about it that way...authenticity...hmmm. But once I get off the ride I feel like I need a shower from the funk. Ugh.

This may be true. But if it is, how do we reconcile the fact that she INSISTS on wearing a striped shirt with striped pants? And not even matching stripes? Same with florals. She SWEARS that they match. Because, well, they're both stripes!! (or florals). This is why I don't mind when she wants to wear her favorite dress almost every day. No matching required!

Ask me how I convinced her ...

Wee hee! ;)

Kimmie, for the love of context what day, month, year and hour is this installment? The eons between chapters has confuzzled me. And what number installment is this? And is it Disneyland or Disneyworld? :rotfl2:

Awww, poor lil Piper! We terrorized Jackson last trip, and six months later, POC was his favorite ride! So I am sure she is ready to see Capn Jack and all the boys!

25 more days to finish here woman....tick tock. nah, no pressure, whenever. Just cuz I finished in a timely manner.... :lmao:

Oh dear, I have some bad news for you. I was one of those "trying to figure it out" kind of kids too. I used to take apart my toys and then put them back together again... successfully!

Bet he likes anything with a button too? Hope he types better than I do though!
:rotfl2:

Wow kpg, you are not mean at all letting Piper skip Splash Mountain, I'd be dragging everyone on everything and telling them all to get a grip :) If they meet the height requirement - they're goin'

This December we are taking some Disney virgins with us, I don't even know if they like rides ~ but they're goin!

Hay Horsey - this most recent chapter takes place May 11 2005. It is day 6 of our 8 day trip. k?

Java - yes, yes, yes! Should I worry? I think not. If he turns out to have the cleverness and generosity you have shown in the avatar department, I'll surely be proud.

Cass - Once ALL of us meet the height requirements nobody will be allowed to sit it out!! But since Syd didn't make it (not sure Piper would have either -- we didn't check) somebody had to stay behind. That's another one she's looking forward to tackling next time.

twinmum -- speak up any time!! I hope your sweet boys love their surprise -- and that you love plotting behind their sweet little backs. ;)

Jami -- we are not fussed about muss in the do. A bit of dogsmell water helps mine out actually. :rotfl:
Haley and hucifer -- i'm back in the race, babies !!!!

Another chapter on the way tonight !!!!

Uh oh! :scared:

Our morning at the Magic Kingdom had flown by, with 2 major must-do’s under our belts and a lot of smelling the roses along the way. And bathroom breaks. Of course. By now it’s pretty much time to hop a boat to the Wilderness Lodge if we want to make our ADR.

On the way back toward Main Street, it became apparent that we could catch Cinderellabration. Hurray! Another must-do, especially for my little princesses. We do not, regretfully, share the same proclivity for pixie dust as do our friends the Whirlwind Trippers (who we did not even know at the time!) Nor do we share their willingness to get there EARLY and stake out prime viewing right up front. But we enjoyed the show from somewhat afar, and retreated to the exit immediately after, without any backstage fol-de-rol.

I had made our birthday-boy’s birthday reservation at the Whispering Canyon Café. On the advice of “The Enabler.” She said it was good fun, despite the absence of characters. She described some of the hijinks, and I read more about them online (I wonder where?) and I knew it would be a perfect spot to celebrate Conor. Because perhaps the only thing Conor loves more than cars, is to laugh. He has a great sense of humor. Especially for a freshly minted six year old. I attribute it to his amazing vocabulary and verbal skills – he “gets” double entendres, plays on words, and the like in a way I didn’t know was possible for a kid his age.

And because of his age, he also finds things like “saladhead” absolutely hysterical.

He loves to laugh. To the Canyon we go!

And, note to future selves … we MUST stay at Wilderness Lodge. It is phenomenal! Just on the walk from the boat dock to the lodge we were blown away. (Stay tuned for a future trip report on our January 2006 trip, which included a stay at the WL! I should have it up in about 7-9 months, at the rate I’m going!) But it felt like home. Similar trees, rocks, and such. I look forward to staying here someday.

Once seated at our table at WCC, we ordered up some beverages. Our server, Rodeo Ricky, talked me into getting the margarita in the talllllllllllll souvenir glass. OK, I admit I already wanted a margarita, he just talked me into the talllllllllllll glass. That I could take home. OK, truth be told, he didn’t really have to “talk” me into it.

Just as I was beginning to wonder what sort of hoopla we could look forward to, Ricky went to the next table, took their drink order, then loudly announced to the entire dining room, “This lady is letting her kids drink COKE!!”

She laughed, and acted like she could give half of a crap if everyone judged her for letting her kids drink Coke.

I think it might have been Mel Happyhaunt.

When he had completed his failed humiliation of the “lady” that might have been Mel Happyhaunt, Ricky came over with a couple of napkins. He fiddled around with them for a moment, and then placed them on my head.

He pronounced me “The Queen.”

Well, duh.

(Don’t tell my kids I said that! I don’t allow the word “duh,” especially in its two-syllable form “du-uhhh!” to be spoken in our house! I think it’s a bit of a reaction to having taught middle school.)

He put straws in my napkin crown, too. And gave me a lovely drink.

Now. I am a dedicated trippie writer (no matter what Cass says!) so I am going to share the photo with you. Despite it being, possibly, the most unflattering photo of myself ever taken. And that includes the 7th grade photo with the braces and the feathered hair and the “layered look” triple threat of turtleneck, Izod shirt (collar up, thankyouverymuch) and a wide-wale corduroy blazer.

It's good to be the Queen. With a tall margarita. And yes, I know the picture is tiny. It's unflattering, benember?

Doug made noises about my hat being silly, so Ricky took care of him.

Yep, nothing like a coffee filter baby bonnet to put a man in his place. It's good to be Queen!

I had finished my margarita and my glass of water so I asked for another glass of water.

Ricky must have not wanted to make another trip, because he brought me this.
47b5db37b3127cce91fc7c17456400000015109FYuWbhsQ

And he made the birthday boy into a pirate
47b5db37b3127cce91fc7b9b844300000035109FYuWbhsQ

And the sister into, a cat? I think?
47b5db37b3127cce91fc780ac44b00000016109FYuWbhsQ

And baby sister was too shy to play, but took over the pirate hat after Ricky had left us to play with somebody else for a bit. She looks pretty tough, don’t you think?
47b5db37b3127cce91fc7826c46700000016109FYuWbhsQ
I think it's the pirate bib.

We ate, we drank. I finished my water. :scared: And asked for a Pepsi.

Ricky hollered to another server across the way “Somebody said the P word!!!” Crap. I forgot. No Pepsi for you. At Disney. And apparently asking for Pepsi is worse by far than feeding Coke to your kids. Judging by the reaction of the crowd. Oh, fine. Give me another tall margarita and a shooter of tequila on the side, please.

(just kidding about that part, folks. I had a Coke and tried to enjoy it.)

Conor opened his gifts. No bomb! And even better, he was free to STOP asking for the Incredibles movie every 3 ½ minutes. He also got a Disney catalog gift card from my dad, some Disney dollars from my mom and from Doug’s dad, the Lion King cd from his Tante, and lots of cards and “HA ha! We knew you were going to Disney and you didn’t!” messages from our loving family. Plus all the loot from my sister which he had already plowed through, back at the villa.

Then came dessert. Ricky came out with a brownie lava sundae looking thing, which looked yummy! Ricky looked like this.
47b5db37b3127cce91fc791905f000000016109FYuWbhsQ

And he said to Conor, “Hey little buddy, I hope you don’t mind that I took a little bite, out back there in the kitchen. It’s not bad for a free dessert!”

47b5db37b3127cce91fc7ffb842100000035109FYuWbhsQ

We sang happy birthday, accompanied by the entire dining room. The Coke drinkers at the next table were especially enthusiastic, probably owing to the caffeination.

All in all, we had a rocking good time celebrating Conor. The Canyon was great fun.

Do go.

Do play along.

Do have the tall margarita.

Do laugh, a lot.
