The May 2007 Rate/Code Watch

What is RideMax?

This is from Ridemax website:
"Using historical wait time statistics for each attraction as a foundation, RideMax analyzes millions of different ride sequences in order to create a minimum-wait-time itinerary. This schedule is tailored to the expected crowd patterns on the day of your visit, for the attractions you want to ride!"
You download software and can enter different dates and rides to generate a schedule with the minimum wait time for rides. Unlike TGM, RideMax is just focused on ride wait time.

But not sure if I need or want all of the features of TGM since I have dining info, park hours and a gazillion touring tips already from various sources like UoG and these forums.
We intend to go commando style at opening for a few hours then slow down to a leisurely pace before park hopping and going commando again in the evening.
So for me, the "what ride to hit when" is the only bit of research I can't accomplish myself and yet is most vital.
There are a few threads here at DIS - do a search for Ridemax and I'm sure you'll find it better explained.

just made hotel ressies ?
I heard people were having a hard time getting them now
we are going may 12 - 19
time for dinner ressies
we have the dining plan...you ?
I had no problem getting hotel reservations. Last trip I made them even closer to the date. We have APs so we are not going with the Dining Plan. The TS restaurants we are planning to try out this trip are Le Cellier for Dinner, Concourse Steakhouse for Lunch, Whispering Canyon Cafe for lunch, Crystal Palace for Dinner, and Ohana for Dinner. We did Ohana and CP last year and loved both :)

I would also love to know what RideMax is. As far as the DDP goes...for me it is not so much about saving money on the food, it is about the freedom to order whatever I want and have it paid for in advance that makes my vacation much more enjoyable for me and my family. To me just that fact alone makes the DDP worth it. I know if I had to physically take the money out of my pocket (or charge it to my room everyday) that I would be very careful about what we eat and I know I would wind up ordering the less expensive things instead of what I really wanted because I would be adding up the bills everyday and driving myself crazy. This way I can be truly on vacation.
:thumbsup2 ITA!

That's the exact same way that the DW and I operate! I personally get a kick out of seeing what the bill would have been had we actually ordered that stuff. :lmao:

Hi May Disney Goers!!! :) So last year we got really amazing airfare rates. $150 per person roundtrip from Boston to Orlando on Delta. This year the airfares are at the cheapest non stop $272 per person! Has anyone booked their airfare yet and found some better deals?

Hi fellow new englander! Nope i havnt booked airfare yet. Im still waiting for southwest to start booking past march 9th. Last year I got round trip from manchester New Hampshire $135! Im hoping it will be that cheap this year! :goodvibes

I found some US air flights that were around 250 or so after taxes and fees. That's actually not that bad but nowhere near as good as southwest. I'd imagine that Southwest will start offering May flights soon I hope?

Geez you guys got it nice...DW and I got round trip flights for $600 CDN each. That's about $520 US! If we didn't have to spend all of that cash on airline tickets we could probably stay at a deluxe resort! Oh well, it is all worth it in the end.

BTW, I've found a great trick to use when choosing your seats. If there are only 2 of you flying have one person reserve the aisle seat and the next person reserve the window seat. This will leave the middle seat open and chances are that no one will want to sit there. If someone does sit between you two, you can ask is that person would like that have the window or the aisle and then one of you moves to the middle seat.

I just tried this on my last flight and it worked like a charm. We actually had an entire row (seats A through F) like this, leaving seats B and E open. A friend of mine who frequents to Houston does this a lot and only once has it happened that the person did not want to switch with him.

For travel in May, when do those great rates typically get published?

Our flights SWF to MCO (Stewart AFB in Newburgh NY) are hovering around $228 total. Since we are visiting Mom 1st day, and she lives halfway between Orlando & Tampa, we have flexibility of flying into Tampa too.

But I get so nervous waiting to book flight when accomodation ressies are set. Think my nerves would be calmer if I knew for sure I would save a few hundred dollars by holding out. :rolleyes2

Wow Tinkerbell! Hopefully Southwest will have those fares! I'd love to be able to fly out of logan again for the same price I got last year...but it's not looking like that will happen!

Planning is half the fun. I hope to book my trip next week after I talk to my DS's teachers and find out a good week in May to go. I am worried that I will book the vacation and it will be during final exams or other important days.
Have fun,
Loralie

Loralie - I think that's a great reason to do the DDP and glad Disney offers this for the many people who feel the same.

For us, the DDP will not be a deciding factor in what we order or even where we dine. So figuring out the worth for us started with choosing what we wanted to eat that matched our tour plan.
Visiting the parks, after all, is our priority. I suspect some people get so caught up in the DDP equation that they are willing to adjust their daily activities to eat at the restaurants with most $$ value. Hey, different strokes for different folks.

My DH & I made a pact many years ago that we never go on vacation and count pennies. Of course that means we vacation less; often save 2 yrs for a 12-20 day vacation. But we leave having saved enough to do what we please - like you, we think being crazy about $$ on vacation just ruins it so that's the solution that works for us.
I love forums like this that show how every family has a unique way to make their Disney magic happen! :goodvibes

We decided to keep our split stay and do DDP for only 4 nts.
I made some changes and here is what we ended up with:
DDP 4nts- CS
POP Century breakfasts
AK Flame Tree BBQ (OOP kids meal)
Cantina San Migel + Liberty Inn for kid
TS
Kona dinner (OOP kid's meal)
Kona breakfast (OOP - MUST have Tonga Toast!)
Hoop Dee Doo
Le Cellier
Planet Hollywood
(we accounted for sharing @ 2 dinners)

OOP 5nts- CS
POP Century breakfasts
MK Cosmic Ray
DTD Wolfgang Express (+kid's meal)
AK Tusker House
TS
1900 Park Fare Breakfast (our only Character meal)
MGM 50s Prime Time

We built in snacks for OOP days just like on DDP.
Once DD looked at menus we were all surprised there were only a couple of times she chose kid's over adult meals
But still the numbers just don't add up doing DDP for the whole 9 nts we are there (having to pay adult DDP when still buying some OOP kid's meals). By splitting stay and DDP to match our touring & eating style, we will still save $200 on DDP and another $200 by ditching DDP, and everyone will be happily fed. That savings pays for Cirque and souvenirs! :thumbsup2

We like having only 7 TS meals and flexibility to eat other meals when we're hungry over the 10 days.
Our situation may be unique since we have Cirque one night, 1 or 2 nights @ Disney Quest and 2 or 3 days at water parks. The 2-3 nights in DTD limits our dinner choices and makes it hard to park hop without spending way too much time on buses. And I know from experience that trying to get changed for dinner on time, after being waterlogged & fried at the water parks, results in some very un-Disney like behavior. :jester:

I just encourage everyone to share menus with their group before committing to either DDP or OOP dining AND consider your touring style/plans when deciding what works best for you.

I'm not sure about SW out of Logan, but I do know that when we flew last year on SW out of Midway (to both Las Vegas and Baltimore) we bought tix as soon as the schedule opened up. About a month later, a ding fare came out and we were able to get the lower fare and the balance was to be used within the the next year. So, you never know - you may end up saving money even after you've bought your tickets initially.

I did do quite a bit of checking around and the cheapest that I've seen it since has been ~$530 CDN incl. all taxes. I checked out exact flights a few days ago and they're pusing $800 CDN per person. I think I got an alright deal. Next time I'm definitely going to fly WestJet; they're Canadian and right now they're the only people to offer non-stop flights to Orlando. Everyone else you need to transfer at a major hub somewhere. We have to transfer in Denver which is alright but I'd rather go non-stop...less uncertainty.

BTW I made my ADR's this morning...called right at 8:00 am EST (6 a.m. here in Calgary!!!!) I got everything I wanted but I still need to schedule in a TS lunch on our 2nd last day. We're doing MGM in the morning and then heading to AK for the afternoon to see the parade at 4 and we'll be staying for EMH's. Any suggestions? Here's where we're having TS meals already:

Akershus Dinner
Crystal Palace Breakfast
Cape May Cafe Dinner
California Grill
'Ohana Dinner
1900 Park Fare Dinner
Artist Pointe
Le Cellier Dinner
Liberty Tree Tavern Dinner

I'm subscribing to this thread! I was originally suppose to go back in October but then I landed a contract job. Then I was suppose to go this March but my contract got extended ... so now I'm looking at May. Contract or no contract, I'm going to WDW. Two years without a trip is long enough!! I'm crossing my fingers for a good package or good AP rates :)

How about BOMA? :thumbsup2

Yeah Boma might work...it'd probably be a last ditch effort though. We ate there on our last trip and it wasn't anything to rave about. I've got a feeling that we'll probably head to Kona for a decent TS lunch after MGM and then head over to AK for the parade.

I've never tried Kona but hope to - we loved BOMA. Isn't it funny how different people's experiences are? :)

about goodoldpal's chart above...

i thought that if you were staying at disney and got the DDP, you had to get it for the entire time?
