LOL I was thinking my DH never goes on here so hopefully I am safe.

OMG you are hardcore! We have corrupted you! Samples? That is how they lure you in.
"C'mon kid try this you are going to love it! It is the same make up Angelina uses and look she had Brad. Nothin' bad about that is there? NAAH it's GOOD for your skin"

Before you know it you will be buying Mac in a dark alley from some broad named Mitzi or hanging around a Maggiano's after a Mac professional development (probably only CR will get that part) just to get their leftovers.

You will get a job in Sephora and then the resident make up artist will make you up each day to look like Dame Edna or Tammy Faye (that is what the MUA does in the Sephora near me) and you will not care just as long as you get your daily make up fix. Your family will stage an intervention with make up remover and cotton balls and then have you use the cheap stuff like NYX to try and let you down slowly. YOu will think you kicked the habit but in the end you will innocently walk by an ULTA ,the door will be open and the smell of the eyeshadow will pull you in again. YOu will need more, more, more to get the "pigment high".
Finally, we might see you holding a sign on the street corner "Will work for make up! " All from that innocent little sample you got.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl2:

OMG - that is toooooo funny!!! :rotfl::rotfl2::rotfl:

don't forget the LE stuff. You have to buy at least one full size now because you will NEVER get this color again, EVER, ANYWHERE!!

All the salesgirls at my Sephora look like drag queens gone wild too! The ones at Nordstrom are a scary shade of orange (or is it burnt sienna?) and wear extremely dark jetblack eyeliner (these are not young ladies either).:scared1:

And the "make-up" consultants ( remember they are one step above a salesgirl in their world) have skin that looks like molded foam rubber whidh has been sprayed with matte latex paint.

I'm like a baby makeup collector compared to you guys. I have approx. 50 eye shadows and around 10 nail polish. I cleaned out nail colors a couple of months ago and tossed everything I didn't love. My DD and I painted toes last night. We are rebuilding our color collection with OPI and a brand we found at Sally's called Finger Paints. We also discussed me cutting my nails down and doing a color for our upcoming vacation to a lake resort nearby. Cat ~ wouldn't you be proud if I went to the lake with color instead of French?

Yes. ::yes:: :flower3:

Cleaning out polish. I did this last Spring. My husband's mom was having a garage sale, and I seriously - SERIOUSLY - had too many (my professional beauty supply outlet has OPI for $3-$5 depending on the color.) This, in addition to the Cosmetology Shows, caused an overload of color.

So - (I dont remember if I told you guys this story) I had a polish that I seriously had for several years BUT it was still fine to use - but it was NEON - and when I "went through" the polish - Neon wasnt in again, yet.

Then it came back in - and I can not find another color like that one to save my life. It was THE COOLEST Neon color ever - you know the color of the orange construction cones when they're faded? Kinda salmoney, coraley, orangey, pinkey?? Like that. I have looked like crazy.

Im so mad at myself for selling it. :guilty:

LOOK! LOL!

I had a shirt that color way back in the 80's (on the left, imagine more vibrant, deeper, as the picture was old)

n1069637892_169614_9543.jpg

Oooo, I found another one:

n1069637892_168667_2951.jpg

I bought it when I was on Vacation in California, when I was like 21, at some snazzy little boutique. I know I know.... It's old, but it was FINE, that's why I kept it. And you know how those neon's dry matte, and FAST - it was good!!!

They were these little round bottles, with a thick, big, white top. The top was like the size of a marshmallow, with this little bubble of a jar, coming out the bottom.

You see how much this has bothered me?? :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

OK I have enjoyed reading this thread so much! I want to say thanks for all the great tips. I've been madly running around town today looking for that darn monistat cream. Dying to try that!
I didn't make it through all pages of this thread but wondering if the topic of anti aging has been discussed. I am in my late 30s and my skin is in pretty good shape. Very few wrinkles compared to how much I have sunned it in the past. Really wanting advice on what to be putting on my face daily to keep it youthful. There is so much out there and much of it REALLY pricey. What is worth it and what are the budget secrets? Specifically looking for something to prevent/reduce wrinkles around the eyes.

As for anti-aging, I just started the Olay Regenerist line around my eyes and on my forehead. It's only been a week, but I do notice a difference in the lines between my eyebrows. They don't appear as deep.

The product I got is the filling & sealing wrinkle stuff (a/k/a wrinkle spackle). I put it on twice a day after my moisturizer sinks in.

Oh! there is a $20 Olay rebate that I read about somewhere. Might want to google that if you plan to try it out.

Well, I'm on a budget now since I lost my part-time "extra" money job and I'm a mineral makeup addict - thankfully it is so much cheaper than traditional cosmetics in most cases. Today was a fun mail day!!

First - and I know this is supposed to be a "cheapo" brand, BUT - I got 19 lipsticks from NYX. I don't care for their eye products, but the round lipsticks are awesome. They stay on and come in some really cool colors! Anyway, if you need a color but don't want to break the bank, mscuppycakes.com sells them for $1.50 each!! Shipping took long though - 15 days.

Next I got some mineral shadows from MixologyMakeup from Etsy. They are really nice! I'm excited. 4 full size shadows from her "Twilight" set were $25 shipped. And I got a free sample of another color which looks nice. I'm most excited about Whiner though - it's a pretty reddish pink. Shipping time - 3 days - LOVE It!

Lastly, I got a sample set from Aromaleigh of a LE shadow line (pic below). So far, my fav is asphalt - it's a black with gold sparkle that works great as a liner! Shipping time - 4 days. Yay!

So, that was my afternoon - sometimes getting the mail is alot of fun!

thanks for letting me share! :)

Question: Are bobby pins supposed to show?

I was just watching Bride Wars, with Anne Hathaway & Kate Husdon. Anne Hathaway had her hair very prettily braided at the top of her forehead and it was tacked down with a plain old brown bobby pin instead of a simple, pretty barrette. :confused3 Another couple of times, she had a section of hair swept back and again tacked with a bobby pin.

I thought bobby pins are usually hidden, like to secure a bun, but the long ends weren't supposed to be showing. Am I just being too nit-picky?

Also, since this is a makeup thread - I thought Kate Hudson's makeup & hairdo was attrocious in that film. :scared1: She's normally very pretty. But they lined her eyes so heavily and gave her bangs that just did not fit her. :sad2:

YES!!! See what I mean...this was a good exercise for us. We truly are addicts. BTW you did count correctly. OMG I only have two eyes( which BTW again I think somehow have conjunctivitis...they were gunky TMI when I woke up today or could be from late nite at the movie shoot lol) Now I need to find what I used yesterday and dump it. I too am a make up snob but I will say 5 of my eye shadows were ULTA which I just got into. I did not count blush and I did not seperate lipstick and lipgloss but still!!!! Do you think we will think twice next time when we are out and see make up we like? .........I think if it is within maybe the next two weeks but then what if they Mac warehouse sale were right down the street from you ....could you resist? What if Beauty Crunch has a huge sale with free shipping? What if Sephora has a 25% off sale...could you resisist??? I do not know if I can. I meed to join MUAA. Could be worse at least make up is not a controlled substance.:rotfl::rotfl:

I tried really hard to walk super fast by the Regis hair salon at the mall tonight. But I happened to glance in and saw a little basket full of little OPI (is that short for opiate?) and HAD to check them out.

Yeeeees, I know I just counted twenty bottles of OPI. Nooooo, I do not need anymore. But now I have sitting on my desk here is a pretty little bottle of "Hawaiian Orchid" . It's such a pretty pink! :cutie:

Oh and I stopped by Ulta today and picked up some Matrix root lifter. I hope I like it as much as I liked Redkin's GUTS.

All the salesgirls at my Sephora look like drag queens gone wild too! The ones at Nordstrom are a scary shade of orange (or is it burnt sienna?) and wear extremely dark jetblack eyeliner (these are not young ladies either).:scared1:

:lmao: I had a salesgirl (using the term "girl" very loosly here) color match me with prescriptives foundation a couple weeks ago. She looked like she circled her eyes a least three times around with a sharpie :scared: I looked at her and thought, "How did Alice Cooper's mother get a job at my local Macy's advising people on how to apply makeup?" I have to admit though, she did a good job matching me with foundation. I made a break for it though when she pulled out the eyeliner.

HI!
Just wanted to give my two cents worth on here!! I am a former make-up artist/Esthetician and MASCARA is a BIG deal for me. I buy a couple of brands at a time just to test them out.

The BEST mascara that I have discovered is BUXOM MASCARA. It is a Bare Essential's brand BUT it is a SEPHORA exclusive and ONLY sold in SEPHORA stores NOT the Bare Essential stores, which is a pain in the rear b/c here where I live there is only 2 Sephora stores and they are really not THAT close to my home....but is is WELL worth the drive!!! It makes your lashes full AND long....not too many do both AND this stufff makes my lashes look AWESOME.....BIG, LONG, and BEAUTIFUL!!! A MUST TRY for all you ladies who LOVE lashes!!!

LOL. BTW I know I said I would think twice but tonight I went ot ULTA looking for the x dri topcoat. It was only 2.00 and honestly it was as good as the OPI. THey were out but I HAD to buy something so I got two bottles of red polish. I could not even control myself for a day! See I am an addict. I justified it because it cost only 2.00 a bottle. Really I was a died in the wool OPI(opiate you are right) user with a dash of Mac on the side but I am finding this ULTA polish is really just the same and I love the variety of reds.

I am not going to buy another piece of make up for two weeks starting right now.

Wow! LOVING this thread! Have been reading it since last night. Almost through... but not quite.

Anyways, I've always been fascinated by make-up, but am really really clueless when it comes to the right products and how to apply. And I'm way too chicken to stop by a make-up counter and ask for help (also fearful of all the products they'll push on me), but anyways...

I'm sure I'm one of those women you'd all love to grab a hold of and redo me. :)

I have been make a list mile high here as I read through, LOL! I know I can't buy them all, funds are limited, but I'd love to play with a few things to start with.

I've NEVER been in an Ulta store, MAC store, or Sephora store. I'm confused. Do they all have their own product lines they sell? Meaning... each store unique? Or do they pretty much sell the same items? For example, will Sephora have MAC items in their store?

As you can see in my sig pic, my eyes are very small. So guess that should be my first order of business? Need a great shade of eye shadow that will NOT crease (a huge problem of mine), a creamy eyeliner that will not fade or SMUDGE (grrrr), and I was thinking of playing around with those individual false eyelashes because mine are absolutely non-existant...

Thanks! Please bear with me and all my questions :) But I'm having a ball listening and learning from all of you. Well, guess all I've learned is how absolutely pathetic I am when it comes to make-up! LOL!

First, off Sephora and Ulta are very low pressure. They will help you with what you ask for but in my experience they do not pressure you. I have found you need to know what you are looking for pretty much when you go in. I would NOT have my make up done anywhere because I worry about bacteria which can be possibility. Mac is not sold at Sephora or Ulta you need to go to a department store like Nordstroms or a MAC store. I know this can be intimidating because they do often try the hard sell IMHO unless you know what you are doing. If you live near an ULTA give their store brand shadow a try. This week they are only 3.00 and I am a make up snob and just bought some because the price was so great but I really liked them and they are IMHO comparable to MAC depending on the color and they are made in USA another consideration when you buy make up. The key to keeping shadow from creasing is primer. I like Urban Decay and I also like Too Faced primers as well as Monostat Powder Gel. After you put the primer on lightly dust finishing powder over it(unless you use monostat). Stila Smudge Pots are great liners and they are on sale at www.beautycrunch.com 3 colors for 12.00. This too is a good way to experiment and not blow your budget.

Individual lashes will be a pain. Easily you can get a mascara that will build your lashes but not make you look like you attached a centipede to your eyelid. Sephora has a pack with 6 or 8 different mascaras for 30 you can try all of them till you find one you like. While you want your lashes to frame and open your eye you do not want to look like you belong on stage in Vegas. I like the Too Faced but I also like Lancome Fatale which they do not make anymore but you can get L'oreal which is made my Lancome and is pretty much the same thing.

I would definately check out the videos on YOUTUBE if you have not. I have mentioned a bunch of people but gossmakeupartist is the best because his looks are doable and they are realistic. Check out his video for mature or hooded eyes that would help. If you have dark hair and eyes grey, and smokey purples seem to be the best colors.

HOpe this helps.

I have Hawaiin Orchid, too - it is a pretty pink. I've tried the fast walk too, doesnt work. It's amazing how agile and flexible your neck can be in situations like that. :rolleyes1 OPIate - yes!!

A lot of people have mentioned they like this one. :thumbsup2

You'll never last. :rolleyes1 ;)

"How did Alice Cooper's mother get a job at my local Macy's advising people on how to apply makeup?"

:lmao: I actually laughed out loud when I read this. I know who Alice Cooper is and can totally picture what you are saying. And I have seen it a lot on makeup counter/store "girls" and it is not a pretty site.

Just last night sitting in VBS closing ceremonies, I was noticing some of the teen girls and there eye makeup smudges and eyeliner running and wanted to go, sweet heart you need to try some Fluidline or Smudgepot eye liner and stay away from those pencils. That is not a good look on anyone. :rolleyes1 I know not nice thoughts to have when you are sitting in a church, but I wanted to educate them.

Welcome to the thread and don't feel like you can't ask questions. All of the other posters have been extremely nice in answering all of my questions and I have learned a lot just by reading their banter between each other. I will warn you that you will be buying more makeup and thinking more about it than you may have before.

Like you, I had never been in a Sephora, Ulta or MAC store. I had never even heard of most of the makeup lines talked about her, but I am proud to say I have now been to each of those stores and have tried some different brands and will probably never really buy "drugstore" makeup again.

For eyeline, I love MAC Fluidline. CathrynRose turned me onto that and I really, really like it. It took a little bit of getting used to, since you apply it with a brush, but it does not come off until you take it off. Occasionally I get a little smudging in the corner of my eye, but that is only on days when my eyes are watering a lot before I put it on so it stays damp and doesn't dry right.

I also second Bella's suggestion of getting the mascara sample set Sephora has. That would be a great way to try different types/brands to see what you like. There are so many "tube" mascara's now that really make small lashes big and full. Not sure I would want to have something false that could come off on my eyes, but they do seem to be gaining popularity.

I have to ask...does anyone know what's up with the vibrating mascara? I just saw an ad for it in my magazine and well, a vibrating mascara brush?!?! :confused3 :rolleyes1

Thanks! Checking out those products now.

I'm used to using a pencil for eyeliner though (drugstore... no favorite... I just buy whatever catches my attention). I'm assuming smudgepot liner has to be applied with a brush? Is that going to be difficult to do? I can't imagine doing my upper lid with a powder and brush... Lower lid, yes, but upper? :scared1: But for $12, guess it can't hurt to try!

I did order the Monistat stuff last night. The 3-pack at Amazon. Not sure if it was the powder gel that I can use as eyelid primer or not. It was the stuff for the face. I'm assuming it can be used on eyelids as well?

Not sure if I have an Ulta store near or not. Guess I'll have to look that up. :)

Thank you for your help!

I will look into the MAC Fluidline as well. Sigh... another brush/powder deal, LOL. Wonder how it compares in price though with the 3/$12. Think I'm just going to go the cheapest right now since I'm not really sure a brush/powder will be my thing. I do remember ordering a powder eyeliner from Bare Escentuals a while back... and it's still sitting under my bathroom sink. Tried it a couple times and gave up.

Sooo.... nobody's had any success with those individual lashes? I don't think they'll look too movie-starish. They don't even sit on your lid. They attach right to your existing lashes.

I'm serious when I say I have little lashes. I've tried SO many mascaras. They don't extend, they seem to just build on what you have... and I don't have...

Hi!! I don't have nearly as much knowledge as the others girls here, but last night I did my first try with false eyelashes. I used Ardell Demi #301. They just go on the outer half of the lashline. I really liked it alot and didn't find it too hard at all. My next attempt will be with the individual "clumps". One thing I did wrong though - I curled them after applying. Bad idea! It made a really weird bend in the lashes. Next time I'll curl mine, then apply the falsies, then mascara.

They are cheap enough and it doesn't take much to give them a try, IMO. Good luck!

Also, about lining with a "powder". I wet my brush, dry it just a bit so it's not soaking, then dab into the powder, wipe off the excess and kind of dot, dash my way across my upper lashline - really close to the lashes. I now prefer that because it really broadens my color options (I use all loose mineral type shadows).
