The Maelstromers... a FASTPASS!

Okay, for my official 500th post (will this magically make me into something besides a Mouseketeer?), I wish to tell you my experience in the Wal-Mart fabric department on Saturday (prior to my son climbing my leg at the Easter Party.)

I needed a small amount of interfacing for my daughter's dress.

I pulled the bolt and handed it to the lady in the department and said "I need a quarter yard please."

She laid the bolt down and started to measure.

Clerk: "One-third yard?"
Me: "No, one quarter yard."
Clerk: "Three quarters of a yard?"
Me: "No, ONE quarter of a yard."
Clerk: You want one-third of a yard"
Me: "Is that the smallest portion you can cut?"
Clerk: "What? I don't understand how much you want."
Me: "One quarter of a yard. Half of a half. (Pause for confused look) I don't understand your question."
Clerk: "One third of a yard is the same as one quarter of a yard."
Me: "Ummm, no. A third is a third, but a quarter is a quarter."
Clerk: "And you want a third of a yard?"
Me: "I want a quarter of a yard, but if you can only cut a third that will be fine."
Clerk: "How about one fourth of a yard?"
Me: "Yes. That will be perfect. Thankyouverymuch."

I swear by all that's holy that is exactly how the conversation went. (This is NOT a Monty Python skit.)

First off Grammy, sorry I didn't get to this first. I sort of fell behind here over the weekend.

Some of you might remember that we had to cancel our December 2005 25th anniversary trip due to the fact that my DH had a massive stroke on Nov 21st. It was a life changing event that I really haven’t dealt with yet. He is basically OK but since he had a frontal lobe bleed he does have serious memory problems and tends to be emotional and say things without really thinking.
*****
LY/MI guys.

Oh Grammy I am so sorry. People can be so hurtful when they speak without thinking of anyone but themselves. Please feel free to vent anytime you like. I hope your friends realize what they said hurt you, you should tell them. I bet they didn't mean to. I think it is very hard for outsiders to understand the sort of loss a spouse goes through in situations like this. I am not sure if it helps or not to know others have gone through something akin to what you are dealing with. I hope it will, so I will share some of my experiances with you.

I sort of have a glimpse of what you are going through, in two ways. First of all my father had a massive stroke when I was 17. His was in his speech center, for the most part. That was 20 years ago now. He is still going strong, but he never regained much speech. He can read some, and understands everything spoken, but has very limited ability to get words out. On top of that the kind of words that get people banned around here are handled in another part of the brain, so for years those words came out a lot of the time. We were teens and thought it was funny, but it was very frustrating for him.

He also had short term memory issues, although those cleared up for the most part (and he has become very good at covering) and huge personality changes. He would blow up and get very angry very quickly, or he would be sullen and depressed for weeks. He was very emotional, too. That was the hardest on my Mom. The good news on that front is that those things went away over time. It took years, maybe 5 or 6, but he went back to his old personality about 85%. He is still a little more prone to anger which they tell us is due to some of the damage, but under it all, if I really think about it, he is the same man. That thought has always been a comfort to me.

One of the saddest things for me is he never got back his math skills. He worked in theoretical mathematics and aeronautical (sp?) engineering. He was part of the think tank that invented the math behind high speed flight simulation. He trained astronauts and helped design many of NASAs space craft. He helped design the Stealth fighter and many other military planes. But the funny thing is, even though that all seemed like so much of who he was back then, I have learned that really it wasn't at all. Because of my father I have met a lot of stroke victims, and I have seen so many times that the soul of the person still shines through and remains unchanged. I am sure you know what I am talking about here, or will after more time has passed. Other people might not see it, but some of us will.

The second way I can relate to your post is that we are dealing with short term memory issues here in the Silly household right now. I have not posted this yet because I wasn't sure how to say it, I have a trip report of our spring break in the works but it is hard to write. In short Steve (Mr. Silly) had two Grand-mal seizures over spring break. And I can tell you that I have never been so scared in my life. He has no history of this, it was the first and I hope only time.

I thought he had had a stroke, or had a tumor. Turns out neither of those things were the cause, so I feel very blessed. But the seizures messed up his short term memory and the medication they put him on has made it worse.

Sometimes it drives me crazy. In some ways it is like having another child in the house, always needing me to remind them to do things and keep track of the many appointments. Having to answer the same question over and over again, and trying not to make a big deal of it, because I know it is hard on him too. He is such an independant man. He always took care of me. It is really hard for him. We are learning to adapt. But I very much understand the little things that add up to a huge thing with the short term memory problems. So :grouphug: LY/MI

For us, we hope, this is a short term problem. As of right now it does not appear to be a major health problem, and we are going to try going with out the med.s next month because he hates the way they make him feel. The doctors tell us that about 50% of the time they never find a cause for the seizures and that is good news because all the causes are pretty horrible.

They also tell us that a good 20%+ of people who have one seizure episode with no direct cause never have one again. So we are aiming to be in that group. The biggest problem we are facing right now is that he can not drive for the next 6 months, and if he has another episope then he really should not ever drive. Mrs. Silly does not like to drive. But we count our blessings, because they are many, and things could be so much worse.

My last thought about strokes, is that over the 20 years I have watched my father recover I have found that he always improves. There is no outer limit or time cut off for this. Many doctors said there was, and they are just plain wrong. The brain is an amazing thing and it does heal, slowly and maybe not perfectly, but it does. So do not let anyone get tell you that where he is now is as good as it gets.

Wow, well I didn't come on here today thinking I would talk about this. :rotfl: My big news is that we (I) decided (harassed Mr. Silly until he agreed) to go back to WDW this fall! Yipee. And in a funny way it is related to Steve's seizures because we will not go on our annual road trip to California this summer (because there is no way I can do that drive). So I will spend that budget on the WDW trip... (yeah we could have flown to California and still gone, but I would rather go to WDW :smooth: )

Grammy I hope you have a good week. Give the Mr a hug from me. And please come vent here when ever you feel like it. LY/MI :grouphug:

Classic!!! I will pass this on to my friend who used to be a craft/fabric dept manager for Wal Mart. Sounds like some of her co-workers!!!

It's enough to make you weep for the future of our country. In the immortal words of Dan Quayle: "What a waste it is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is."

Words to live by my friends.

Yes, it was very disturbing to me that I had to try and explain how much a quarter of a yard was - I was about to break it down into inches when she finally offered me "one-fourth." Since that is SO CLOSE to a quarter, I decided to take it! ( :lmao: hehe)

I still think everyone should have to work a job where simple math is involved - and the cash register doesn't tell you all the answers. Quick test - if your bill is $8.62 and someone hands you $10.37, how much change should you get back?

Aaaaaahg! That is hilarious! And painful. And a little sad. :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

We're always looking for new places to dive and vacation. So feel free to share if you've got any great spots! :fish:

I haven't gone diving, only snorkeling...but we went on a 10 day trip to St. John and holy cow..not only is the place absolutely gorgeous and low-key...the diving, I hear, is awesome! We went with our friends who are very good friends with the owner of the local dive shop there so we went on many boat trips...saw many beautiful places...and kicked our own fannies for not getting certified to dive before we went!

heyhey - is the new kid trying to get in on the action? (j/k - we're all new kids, I think, with a few notable exceptions - especially LOU - you don't think I'm going to leave you out again, do you?)

Seriously, have we seen you postin' round these parts before? If not, we need to give you the indoctrina . . . ummm, initiation rite.

Maelstrom!

GaAristocrat...don't give me a headache! My husband and I used to own a golf driving range and I had to fill in at the snack bar one day. The cash register we had didn't calculate the change you give back...I had to do it and when I had to add up people's orders and make change, I suddenly became an idiot. I had graduated with honors from UGA...yet that little task just caused me great mental pain! :lmao:

Horsegirl... not many people think building is fun, but I love it. I'm not going to love it this time because I'm having to wait it out in a little rental house (my refrigerater wouldn't fit through the doors, so it is in the garage. It is a major pain in the you know what). Check out frankbetz.com for some really cool houseplans....

Melon...I had a drink like that at Trader Vics...it was huge with 3 straws for me and my two friends. I am a germ freak and can't stand to drink after people...however I had downed a few cocktails prior to that one and I actually forgot about the whole backwash issue that normally wouldn't have let me partake in such a delight!

Is this a trick question? Call it the lawyer in me, but as I parse your test, if MY bill is $8.62 and someone hands ME $10.37, how much change should I get back? Answer: none. But the person who gave me the $10.37 to give to the pimply-faced kid behind the counter to pay my bill should get back a buck and 3 quarters (or is that 3 thirds, by the new math?)

We all went to lunch today as a staff. It was fun, my boss (Senior Minister) kept going around the table taking pictures of everyone with his camera phone. He's had this phone for months and today, he decides to start taking pictures with it. Clearly, he wanted to capture this day. I am really going to miss him.

Grammy: So sorry about all that you have been through. Sometimes people pick the worst time, or method, to dump off their feelings. However, it sounds like you both have a lot of people that do care for you even if they don't always manage to show it in the correct manner.

:grouphug:

Georgia: ROFL, that is just great. Sounds like something that would happen to my sister.

grammy

keep your head up lady!!! :sunny:

OK, I am about to book us for Sept 29th - Oct 7th :woohoo:

SO.... when did/does my 180+10 day ADR window start? Did I miss it already, am I way behind? Am I going to be sorry out of luck for the Fantasmic dinner package?

And is anyone else useing Tourguidemike.com to plan there park days. His best days info is rock solid. He is da man. We have used his advice twice and the UG twice and TGM beats the pants off UG.

Who is going at the same time? I think we need a mini meet in Epcot.

We are not hopping and I do not know which park we will be in which day yet... but we are flexable. Alternately lots of us seem to be doing the MNSSHP on the 5th (if you plan on the 6th change your mind now, it is the Friday of a 3 day weekend and will be packed with locals). We could do a pre party meet. Cause everyone that is anyone knows you have to be there before the party starts, it is all in my TR.

Anyone want to Maelstrom with the Silly family???? And admit it, you are planing on buying the viking horn helmet too, aren't you. :rotfl2:

If any of you want I can start a thread for an early Oct meet.

Grammy--- :grouphug: :grouphug: I know cyber-hugs are not as good as the real thing, but the emotions behind them are real. I am in awe of you strenth of character. I'm very sorry your friends felt the need to unload all of that on you. Please remember that you have lots of friends here, and we stand ready to help you any way we can, even if it is just by listening.

God Bless!

Thank you! The next few months will tell the tale, waiting and seeing is very hard...

Our last big test that could show something we would rather not see is Wednesday afternoon. He has an EEG. If that is clear we are out of the woods, and then the waiting game really starts because he will go off the meds.
