The Long Lense League

I thought I'd start a thread for shots taken with long lenses. What qualifies? I'll leave that at poster discretion. I was thinking about shots taken with the equivalent of 135mm+ lenses on full frame, but you can define long however it suits you.

Here are a few shots to get started:

Canon 70-200 f/2.8 at 185mm (240mm equiv on FF) at f/2.8

Canon 70-200 f/2.8 at 200mm (260mm equiv on FF) at f/2.8

Canon 70-200 f/2.8 at 200mm (260mm equiv on FF) at f/3.2

Oh man, this is gonna be an expensive thread for me!!! I've been fighting the urge to pick up a Canon 70-200 2.8 for months now, Disney pictures are gonna put me over the edge!

I rarely use longer focal lengths for "necessary zoom" (i.e. I can't get close to animals on KS, so I zoom). I usually use it for perspective compression. Here are some examples--clicking each takes you to Flickr where you can find EXIF. My bet is most will be @200mm, but I could be wrong. The ones from DLR were taken with a Tamron 70-200, the ones from WDW were taken with a Nikon 70-200 VR.

I'll stick with Disney for now, since I have literally thousands of shots between 300mm and 500mm (actually between 450 and 750mm with crop factor). I don't long-lens too often at Disney, but every so often I'll shoot something in the over 300mm equivalent range. Here are a few:

After taking the rented Canon 400 2.8 (which I assume is similar in size to it's Nikon equivalent) I don't think I would walk around the Magic Kingdom with it. I might - for the briefest of moments - consider taking it to Animal Kingdom so I could get up close and personal so to say with the animals.

The Canon lens is HEAVY and bulky to be doing any kind of touring. I guess - if I could go down to the parks on my own for a photography trip with no wife or kids I guess I would consider it. I would definitely want to pick a low crowd time of year though.

Hmmm, something to consider I guess.

Can't say I completely agree with that assessment. While I don't have this lens and wouldn't rent it because I don't think the cost/benefit would weigh in favor of it, if I did own it, I'd take it out for a spin at all of the parks. Animal Kingdom would actually be the least of my concerns with it, but that's only because it is generally the least of my concerns...with any lens.

I'll bet there's a decent amount you could do, creatively, with those beast-lenses that doesn't involve needing them for the reach. Never used one, so I can't say definitively, but it seems like there would be.
