The Liberal Thread #2 - No Debate Please

My grandmother voted for Hillary yesterday and will vote Republican over Obama - so there seems to be some of it on both sides but I think a lot of that is due to the fervent support they both have.

This I just don't get. Hillary and Barak are so close on the issues, why would anyone vote republican. (BTW, I have heard Obama supporters also say they would vote for a Republican over Clinton)

Howard Dean's thoughts on a possible brokered convention were interesting. He sounds like he will do all he can to avoid that possibility.

Quote: "I think we will have a nominee sometime in the middle of March or April. But if we don't, then we're going to have to get the candidates together and make some kind of an arrangement," said Dean, who failed in his bid for the party's nomination in 2004.

"Because I don't think we can afford to have a brokered convention -- that would not be good news for either party."

Should it come to this, hang onto your hats, folks. Could be interesting times.
Who knows what will happen in the next couple of months. Will have to see how things evolve.

I am not going to post on this thread anymore. I thought that this thread would be a place to work things out and find common ground. I was stupid enough to think that the need to be right over need to do right was restricted to the other side. I hate that I feel so wrong.

You all talk about Hillary's divisiveness - but she is not creating this divide, is she? So go ahead and tear me up. I am going back to my fluff.

Please, this is a political thread and we all have strong opinions (mine seem to line up with yours, BTW). Relax and you are very welcome on this thread. Really.

I think the mandates just make people feel like the gov has more control over there life. I don't like mandates but I do agree with them. If we are going to insure EVERYONE at an AFFORDABLE rate than we have to.

I am one that has no need to change insurance and hate paying almost 1,000 a month for the 4 of us...including co pays up the wazoo....

There are many that would rather spend there $50 a week on there beer and cigarettes than put it towards there health care..so that is why mandates are important...among other reasons

it is also said that 15 million uninsured under Obamas plan will be left behind

When was the last open convention? Does anyone know?

ETA: Never mind I looked it up:

"For Democrats, that was in 1952 when it took three ballots to nominate Governor Adlai Stevenson of Illinois for the first of what would be two unsuccessful campaigns for the presidency. The GOP's last multi-ballot convention occurred four years earlier in 1948. New York Governor Thomas Dewey won that one in another three ballot contest before going on to lose to Harry Truman."

When was the last open convention? Does anyone know?

From the article about Dean's thoughts I cited above, "The last conventions that required more than one ballot to designate nominees were in 1948 for the Republicans and 1952 for the Democrats."

Thanks, I got it. I am really tired. I want to go to bed but am waiting for DH to get home from Vegas.

Floridian chiming in here.

Sounds to me like a lot of people have no idea what they are talking about here.

Florida has an overwhelming Republican majority up in Tallahassee. They were the ones that put through a vote to change our primary date and we the people of Florida HAD NO SAY in the matter what so ever. When the DNC said that we had X number of days to move it back - I just about fell over. Our state Dems were going to get the Republicans to make that change why? They had a very vested interest in keeping the primary where it was - not just for Florida to have a larger say in the nomination (why does NH and OH matter that much again? I think we should be fighting for a single national primary - but I digress) but a chance to screw the Dems? Hey they were all over it.

Hillary DID NOT campaign here at anytime. Neither did Obama. However - both of them had fundraising teams here - make no mistake. They were allowed the fundraisers by the rules the DNC set down. Coming to the state after the primaries were over does NOT constitute campaigning.

Finally - how dare you all? Really - how dare you all so casually dismiss me and my vote? Not just mine but a record number of voters on both sides? (The Republicans lost half their delegates due to the date change.) This was done to us by a stubborn state legislature and a wrong headed DNC. I cannot believe that my fellow Americans are not only not standing up and echoing my voice but they are actually part of the move to stifle it. Actually, it seems to be an Obama supporter thing more than a general opinion. Funny things is - I voted for Obama in the primary. But the words and actions of his supporters combined with some other misgivings that I have had, moved me firmly into Hillary's camp.

I don't really know why you are taking it so personally. No one is attacking you. The DNC set the stupid rules to begin with and unfortunately, they should be kept. The DNC took away your vote, not anyone on this thread.

Aw - c'mon - this is that Obama technique of lowering expectations...... isn't it?
<- said tongue in cheek

Everything I've heard since this morning is that Obama is invincible and will win the next 7 contests (most of which are caucuses....)

I don't buy that at all - aside from my pessimistic nature (;)). I think in part it's like NH - it gets built up so much and people lose fact of the strength of the Clinton name.

This I just don't get. Hillary and Barak are so close on the issues, why would anyone vote republican. (BTW, I have heard Obama supporters also say they would vote for a Republican over Clinton)

I would have to be REALLY convinced to vote for Hillary if she is the nominee - she just rubs me completely the wrong way if I'm going to be honest.

So what did you think of the explanation? Did it answer your questions?

Healthcare isn't up there on my list and if I had to give the nod to a candidate, I'd say Hillary has the smarter plan. However, the idea of a mandated government run healthcare system just screams socialism to me. Also, I don't think her plan has any chance in hell of passing.

So who then? McCain (I shudder)? I mean on the issues who else is there?

Did you see Obama raised $5.9M in 24 hours since the polls closed (and counting)?! :woohoo:

I gave Hillary $100 today. LOL

I think alot of Hillary supporters thought she had enough cash already!

She'll hopefully reach her recent goal......

I do have to say - that's my budget for the year ....... (I still hold a grudge against Kerry\Edwards for wasting my $100 in 2004!!!

Bloomberg.

:rotfl: too bad he's not running and has repeatedly said he would not run this time. Maybe in 4 years. However, whoever gets elected this time gets to appoint quite a few Supreme Court Justices.

I kind of think this $5M infusion is a ploy to keep her expectations low. It's all about the spin as we saw last night by both camps!

I can't believe for a second she's short on cash after raising something like $100+M so far.

I gave Obama $100 last night and tonight as well - I need to stay away from the wine. :lmao:

Yeah he keeps saying he's not but his actions are saying otherwise. I think the media is saying if Hillary is the nominee, he'll jump in, or maybe that was just speculation.

Caucuses are horrible! I would hate to vote like that. Give me my own private booth!

And both states have never held one before - how they heck do they organize that in a fair way?

That whole DNC decision - its ugly!

I have no idea. And anytime the DNC makes any sort of decision, I think we should all question it! ;)
