It was the worst of times, it was the best of times...

I was one of the very last Guests to leave Alfredo's when it was closed down on Friday night. I was with several friends, including two who had flown in from Chicago to say goodbye.

Alfredo's has been my "local mom and pop Italian restaurant" for several years. It definitely was not a chain restaurant, and did not act like one. I had first met Richard (the General Manager) there several years ago, and he, as well as some of the other managers, got to know me as a regular customer. I could always get seated within ten minutes, as long as I was not with more than four people. This was even if I did not have a reservation and they were booked solid. It helps to be known as a good customer and a good tipper.

Richard had been thinking, when he was told of the closing, to actually close after lunch on the 31st and having a "farewell party" for the staff. However, when he got to work the morning after the public announcement was made he found that there were reservations for about 1,200 seats for dinner on the 31st, with most of them having been made in the prior 24 hours.

Our reservation was for 9:30, just after IllumiNations would have ended. Luckily for us we had stopped by at about 3:00 and Richard told us that he had been told by Disney that they were actually going to start tearing things out at 10:00, so phone calls were made and we were able to be there at 8:30.

When we got there you would have thought that Italy had just won the World Cup and were celebrating. It seemed that almost the entire staff, including the cooks, were in the Dining Room and they were very spiritedly singing the Italian National Anthem and waving Italian Flags. Lots of pictures were being taken, both by guests and staff.

Service was a bit spotty, but with all the partying going on that was to be expected. They had run out of some of the appetizers, some of the entrees (but not fettucini) and even some desserts. Also no frozen drinks were available. However, the food which was available was excellent, as usual.

Around 9:30 the trumpeter started playing Taps. The managers were all around, and visiting with the Guests. We found that our friends from Chicago were not the only people who had flown in for this night, there was a couple at the next table who had flown down from New York for one last meal there and we met others who had come into Orlando just for the last day.

A little before 10:00 we went out into the Lobby to get a last photo taken. At that time many of the portraits from the wall were gone. Richard removed the portrait of Alfredo with Orson Welles and gave it to me as a souvenier, it will maintain a place of honor in my house. I noticed that the giant Canoli was gone, hopefully it has found a good home and will not end up on eBay. Also there were stacks of menus and wine lists for people to take home with them.

Before leaving and while we were having desserts, our waitress told me that she could not put any ice in my iced tea as the ice machine had been turned off and was, even as she spoke, being disconnected.

We finally left a little after 10:00. At that time there were a lot of Disney workmen already in the restaurant starting to remove the lobby furniture and fixtures, so they were not kidding when they had said they would start disassembly at 10:00.

Obviously I am unhappy that this branch of one of the top Italian Restaurants in the world is being replaced by a chain restaurant from California. But in a way I was glad that I was able to be there to celebrate their last meal.

Wow...thanks for this thread. I am one of the DISers who always loved Alfredo's, and will really miss it. It was the first Epcot restaurant I had ever dined at, and it was the last (during our last WDW vacation). We always had good meals, even when we were elbow-to-elbow with the guests next to us (that place was always SO crowded!).

I have many good memories of Alfredo's. For DH and I, Epcot just won't be the same without it :( .

I would have loved to have eaten there this year. We skipped it last time because of a picky kid:sad2:

What a terrific memory and momento you have to treasure now. Thanks for sharing this story with us.

I never even cared for Alfredos, yet I'm tearing up! I'm so glad you got to say goodbye!

'Fredo's was the favorite restaurant of all time for our family. Our first visit there our small twin DDs sat in high chairs and ate the melon and proscituto
appetizer for their entree. The last time we were there, the DDs ordered cocktails with their meal.

I don't know the menu or quality of the restaurant that will replace Alfredo's, but a part of the Disney magic disappears with the departure of this venue in our family.:earsboy:

I wish I could have been there. I always loved eating at Alfredo's, and it was one of my family's favorites. I made sure to eat there one more time before I left this summer.

Good for you to be there.

Do you know if most of the employess form Alfredos will be working in the new restauarant?

I liked your farewell story to Alfredo's.....it did have an interesting run and I was always one person who defended the restaurant and we always ate there until that last visit, and then I was done. I wonder what happened to them, did they lose interest, did they want out, did they cut corners, not sure, but it sounds to me that they went out gloriously and the fact that the manager recognized that you were a faithful patron and gave you a memento touched my heart this morning..

Ciao Alfredo's.....

We've always enjoyed our meals at Alfredo's and made it one of our regular stops when in WDW.

Great post. I'm sorry to see it close.

When is the new restaurant opening?

Alfredo's has been one of our must-do restaurants. There were nights when the service was slow, but the food was always great. We will miss it.

I'm so sad that Alfredo's has closed. We ate there in January and it was our favorite meal of the whole trip- we all loved it and it will me missed :(

Thanks for posting about your last night at Alfredo's. My Wife and I have enjoyed dinner there for several years now. We always ordered the fettucini, it was the best we have ever had. Were going to miss eating there when we go back in December. We ate at there replacement's restaurant at DD in California and were very disapointed. It was by far the worst meal of our trip. Let's hope this is not the case in WDW.

We ate at Alfredo's Sunday 8/26. It was our first time eating there, and wouldn't have eaten there this time if the Teppanyaki refurb extension hadn't bumped us from our 8/26 ADR's at Teppanyaki. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Alfredo's and are sorry it took so long for us to try it and that we won't be able to eat there again.

Thank you for posting the report about the final evening at Alfredo's.

However, I don't think it's fair to call Tutto Italia "a chain restaurant from California." Although the Patina Restaurant Group operates a portfolio of restaurants, I'd hardly call it a chain. It would be like referring to Jiko, Le Cellier, Kona Cafe, and Citrico's as chain restaurants because they're all part of the Disney's restaurant operations.

Maybe Tutto Italia will be great. Maybe it will be awful. Maybe it will be somewhere in between. I'm optimistic. I expect it to be better than Alfredo's, at least based on our experience at Alfredo's. Our only meal at Alfredo's was about a dozen years ago. It was so disappointing that we haven't been back since. (Obviously other people have had much better experiences at Alfredo's.)

This got me thinking. Maybe I was just not paying attention, but I don't ever remember a signature Epcot restaurant closing and reopening under another operating partner. Has this ever been done before?

:sad1: I was so sad when I heard Alfredo's was closing. DF and I ate there on the Aug. 29, so we were able to say goodbye. The food was always wonderful and the service was great.
Thnak you for posting your last supper experience. Alfredo's will be greatly missed.

Well.. before LeCellier was LeCellier it was a buffeteria if my memory serves me correctly.. so it went from a mediocre restaurant to what it is today..not sure who was the operating partner though..

Also, we always ate at Norway in the past, it was a Norwegian buffet, hot and cold, now we do not eat there as it is Princesses.....I believe the food is the same though...

Oh wow! You gave me goosebumps! We had never tried Alfredo's until last month and fell in love with it. We wish we would have gone there sooner! I am so glad you posted this and let us in on that last night! And how wonderful you got that picture to take with!

DH and I ate there in 2004 and it was by far the worst Italian food we've ever had. We love Italian and have eaten every kind from the tiniest mom-and-pop "real" Italian place to Olive Garden, and never had anything as dull and tasteless as the signature dish of Alfredo's. After that overpriced disappointment I swore we'd never eat there again ... and now I guess we'll have a new place to try out instead.

Aside from that, I'm glad you got to properly say goodbye to a restaurant you enjoyed, even if we didn't like it.
