The Kids Surprise Trip and Our Winter Weather Escape! ~With LOTS of pictures~

Another Snowbirdie here! Our first stop was Tomorrowland to ride Buzz too...we must have ridden 2 dozen times before we left! Your boys look so excited to be in Disney!

Welcome! :goodvibes

The boys could ride Buzzlightyear over and over and over all day!! :yay: :yay:

Ummm... what's an LGMH?

Lime Green Mickey Head - the paint chip sample cards from Home Depot. I'm sure you've seen them around... People put their DIS names on them and hand them on their park bags so other DISers can spot them. :thumbsup2

Wednesday January 21st~

We set the alarm for 7:00 and I got up and hopped in the shower while DH turned on the weather channel. He says to me - it is only going to be 50 today and it's only about 30 right now. He then asked if I wanted to just skip our MK plans and stay in the room all day. What??? :scared1: No way! I wanted to be at MK at opening and a little cold weather wasn't going to stop me!!

So being that we left our winter coats in the car back in Pittsburgh, we all put on a shirt, sweatshirt, and jacket. The kids wore hats and the kids and I wore mittens. So here we were in Florida all bundled up!! :rotfl:

After all that we were a little late heading out. But an MK bus came as soon as we got to our bus stop. We made it to MK just after the opening show. We decided to stick with tradition and head to Fantasyland first. As we got up by the castle there were CM's greeting people and giving the kids stickers and they had a bubble machine blowing bubbles everywhere! The kids had a blast! :yay: :yay: Up first was IASW and Peter Pan. Next would have normally been Philharmagic (my favorite 3D show) but it was closed for refurbishment. :sad1: The kids weren't interested in the Winnie the Pooh or Snow White rides this time. :confused3 The line for Dumbo wasn't huge yet so we rode that next. Then headed to Mickey's Toontown Fair. It was already open at 9:45, which was weird because I thought that section didn't open until 10:00. Goofy's Barnstormer wasn't running yet. The CM said it would be shortly. I don't know if they were waiting for it to warm up a bit or what, but we didn't wait around. We went into the Toontown Hall of Fame but all the lines we already over an hour long!! Can't really complain, that was the only place with long lines all day! The park was actually pretty empty. :cool1: One advantage to the cold weather I guess!

So from there we took the train over to the Frontierland/Adventureland stop.

The line for BTMtnRR said 20 minutes, but there was actually no wait! When we got to the end of the line and were about to board the ride a woman said to DH - Are you a DIS board member? She had spotted his LGMH! :thumbsup2 He told her that I was and we said hi and she told how we were the first DISers she had ever met! Too bad I didn't get her name. :guilty: We rode BTMtnRR and let me tell you that was quite chilly! We thought about SplashMtn, as the wait time was only 5 minutes! But we decided to pass and headed on to POTC! pirate: No wait for that either!

After that we were getting hungry. I didn't have any breakfast. DH and the kids had a light breakfast in the room.

So we headed to DH and the kids favorite MK spot - Casey's Corner! We were the first ones through the door when they opened at 11:00 and were able to get an inside table and get warmed up!

Nice update! I can't believe how cold it was!!!!!!! I can't even imagine how cold it would have been if you had gotten wet on Splash Mountain! :scared1:

Nice that it kept the crowds down though. :goodvibes
And fun that you met a DISer! :thumbsup2

I don't know if I would be able to skip Splash!!! :scared1: It's my favorite ride at WDW - ever

But, ya know - the hypothermia thing may make me take a second look ;)

Great update!

And your hair looked great, BTW- love the curls!:lovestruc

The boys looked so cute-- and the MK looked empty! Aside from the cold-- what a great day you were having!

I am so glad I stumbled upon your trip report! I have been tossing around the idea of a Christmas surprise for this year and going pretty much the same week you did! The 21st is our anniversary, so we could make it an anniversary present/trip and the kids Christmas present too! My kids are older, 14 and 10 so missing a few days of school worries me a bit. But mainly I want to hear all about the crowd levels and the weather. From what I have read, January is a mystery, could be nice or could be cold. Our previous trips were in May and August, so cooler weather may be a nice change.

Can't wait to hear more!

Hi there - enjoying your trippie - I was there on a solo trip on the exact same dates. 30-50 was cold, but it was -22 at home, so tropical for me! Here's me watching Wishes on Wed. the 21st - missed you by a night!! Great when it was cooler though, as there was hardly anyone there (this was taken in the hub in front of the castle) - went back when it was warmer later in the week, and could hardly move in front of the castle.

Looking forward to the rest of your trippie!

Yes it was tempting to go on Splash Mtn since there was no wait, especially considering that the last time we rode it we didn't get wet at all! But we decided not to chance it.

Maybe next time!

Welcome to my TR!

Yes, the January weather in Florida is a mystery! One day it was 50 and a few days later it was 80 and we were swimming! :confused3

As for the crowds, it was more than we expected. Wed the 21st wasn't bad, mainly because of the cold weather I think. But you'll see as I go on we ran into some real crowds on other days. We are considering January for next year, but will probably be looking at a week later, staying away from MLK Jr Day completely. The cooler weather sure was a nice change!

Good luck with your surprise! It is so much fun!! :yay:

You are right, no matter how chilly it was there it was still much warmer than it was here!

How funny that we were there at the same time!

Hi Shelly great update. I can not belive it became so cold when you were there that day. You think it will ever get warm here? I am starting to think it wont.:sad2:

Thanks Pam! :goodvibes

No, I don't think it will get warm here anytime soon! :sad2: Maybe in a few months.

It sure was nice to get out of PA for a week in the middle of winter!

Great updates! Sorry it was ss cold. Did your DH really think you were going to sit in the room all day ? Mk looks empty in your pics, even though Toontown was packed. My DH likes Casey's too.

Your hubby is a funny funny little man! Stay in the room all day:lmao: we didn't even do that when we were there for our honeymoon;)
