The "Man with the Cane:" Is he haunting Orlando to this day?
Contributed by
Michael Jamis

I worked the Orlando Mansion in 1978. At that time, a story about "The Man with the Cane" was already circulating. I was told he would appear in an empty Doombuggy in the load area late at night when ride operators were by themselves at the load position. Story goes a girl was working load late one night, they had gone down to one stretch room and the crowds were light. This meant there was usually a lapse in guests between stretch room dumps. This left you, the operator alone for a few minutes, walking the load belt, listening to that music and the sound effects, peering into the darkness that stretched into the ride at one end and from the unload area at the other. So one night this hostess is working load when from the unload area a Doombuggy rounds the corner with a man sitting in the middle of the seat, looking very gaunt, staring straight ahead, hands resting on a cane positioned in front of him. The operator tries to make eye contact and say hello, the man does not respond but instead disappears with the Doombuggy as it works it's way into the ride. The hostess goes to the load console, calls the unload operator on the phone to say, "Who was that you just sent me? He wouldn't say hello!" To which the unload operator responded, I didn't send anyone around to you. They contacted their lead, all waited for the car to come out of the ride and of course when it did... it was empty. We were always told it was the ghost of Yale Gracey. Whether this is true or not I do not know, but I can tell you I cursed the employee who told me the story... especially on those late nights when I was alone, walking the load belt, listening to the music, staring at the wallpaper, the wallpaper staring back at me... I was so relieved when the stretch room doors would open and those guests would pop out...

i am astounded how seriously some of you are taking this subject. a kid (no offense) acts out with typical teenage braggadocio, and some of you react as if this is an important subject worthy of your repetitive posts. do you not have jobs or families that would warrant better use of the time you're wasting on this vapid "chatter." if you are so intent on educating this youngster who didn't ask for your "life lessons" ; how's about you get a job as a teacher or mentor and make a real difference in the world. otherwise, let's leave him/her alone and stop glorying in the fact that some adults with more time and resources to visit the haunted mansion can put a kid back in his place when he gets a little too excited about his favorite ride.

p.s. please don't welcome me to the dis. i've been coming here for years. i just usually don't post because i am not privy to the status of future crowds; nor am i desirous of repetitively posting my choice of favorite mountain.

Trust me, with how you post, I have no desire to welcome you. If our "repetitive posting" bothers you so much, why come here at all? No one is harming anyone by posting about their favorite rides, but you sure seem to be angered by it. You have no idea what any of us to do make a real difference in the world, so try not to pump yourself on the pedastool by thinking you're somehow better than anyone here because you are "above" making repetitive posts. Wow, we should all strive to be more like you. :sad2:

Wolf, I think it's been made pretty clear that people are kind of interested in this thread dying off. As been stated by several posters, no need to beat a dead horse. You've already started another HM thread, so go enjoy it.

No one is joining and alot of people like this thread. So I want people to share their HM knowledge or questions. :)

No one is joining because you keep coming back to this one. If you want your thread to thrive, you gotta make it happen...especially since just half an hour ago you told them to join the other thread. But bear in mind that people may simply not be interested in continuing the conversation, period. Sometimes that happens...topics die out, but eventually they resurface again.

Sorry to prolong the life of this thread, but this really annoyed me. Granted, there are many inane threads on the DIS, but who the heck are you???!!!

You contribute nothing (although I am sure you have used info from the boards over the past few years -- otherwise, why would you even log on) and yet mock those who do contribute.

Worthless.

I must commend you on this comment - you are a very smart young person. What an eloquent way to bring this thread, that seems to be going downhill, back to the subject - YOUR FAVORITE RIDE. Who cares if you researched it - isn't that how we all learn? We ask questions, read books and on-line material, and we learn from real-life experiences. A combination of the three, plus there are a lot of other ways. School, TV Documentaries, etc etc.

I love the HM too - I've been riding it since I was a child and I'm thrilled that it's still the same. I do miss the whimsical chair towards the beginning of the ride. The dialogue says "and hot and cold running chills. Shhhh. Listen." I think that's right. Anyway, there was a chair at the beginning of a hallway with the candles coming towards you. I miss that chair. I know that's silly. Do you know what happened to it???

Anyway - you keep researching. But, Cleo is right, you've put yourself in the midst of a lot of people who know what they are talking about. So, this will be a challenge for you. You better have it all straight or they'll "getcha!"

Someone please tell me what AW is?

It means "Attention *****". And yes, my appologies, I was being a little mean.

(damn word filters... ***** = another word for prostitute that starts with a W)

Everytime I ride (which is numerous times each and every trip) it seems the ride stops in the middle. Someone told me that it's because people are standing up in their seats. Is this true? If not - is it one of the 999 Happy Haunts?

They have to stop the rides to let physically handicapped people on the ride- it takes longer for them to get seated. Also, it is important that the timing be right.

Thank you for the explanation.

There used to be a "scaracter" a real living actor that played a suit of armor in the corridor of doors. This became a problem soon bc the knight was given a remote that all CM's get that can shut down the ride at any time for an emergency. They said it became a problem when they could not find ppl to work the hours they needed for the knight. And the knight used its remote freely when people touched, spat at, or hit him/her. Also the knight would occasionally touch ppl which was a BIG NO-NO!

To stick to the point the remote that stops the ride is used when someone ventures from their doombuggy, when a handicapped or special needs guest needs to board the ride, and whenever there is any technical or mechanical problems with the ride.
