[2] LIGHTS is an avant-folk four-piece from Brooklyn that draws heavily on the 70ies psych-rock, funk and disco-pop traditions blending it with ethereal vocal arrangements/harmonies and a more contemporary drone input. The band is compromised of Sophia Knapp (words, gtr, vox), Linnea Vedder (drums, vox), Andy MacLead (bass, formerly of WHITE MAGIC) and Wizard Smoke (light show, visuals). Their self-titled debut was recorded by Greg Weeks (ESPERS) at the Hexham Head Studio and released through Language Of Stone (World) and Twisted Nerve (UK) to some critical acclaim. The band is known for their highly visually enhanced live shows. Their second album “Rites” is scheduled for July 21st 2009 on Drag City.

Because Lights is Lights, one hundred percent: from the lyrics down to the self-described hippie-meets-Barbarella-space-galaxy-queen style, and not even a gig with Old Navy can change that.

You’ll recognize “February Air” and “White”, two of the tracks off of her freshly released EP, from the fashion giants’ commercials, but you truly won’t recognize Lights as anyone other than the authentic persona she has become. Lights is a female artist from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She composes and sings powerful and beautiful electronic indie-pop songs. She describes her music as follows: “Most of what you hear comes out of my bedroom. When I write songs I think about how it makes people feel, and I hope that when it goes into your ears you feel happy too. Not sexy happy but apple pie happy. When I do shows I suppose I would do everything myself if I were a squid, but I only have two arms.
