They called it The Great March in Ft. Myers where 75,000 mostly Hispanic and some illegal aliens participated in a peaceful demonstration and voiced concerns about immigratiom reform. My son came home Monday night and his mother noticed that he was sunburned and put 2 and 2 together quickly. He had joined about 60 kids from his High School that marched from the school to the pier and on to the Courthouse. I had to play the father role and question his motives. He told me that some of his friends that come by the house are here illegally. He asked if I thought Alfredo was a felon. I said, "No. I think Alfredo is more responsibile in many ways than you. He feeds the dogs and watches our house when we go on vacation." He asked about Cesar, Andreas and their families. He put a human face to the problem and I had to tell him that I was proud and supported his efforts. I remember the 60's.

I know better than most the borders need to tighten security. I lived and worked 8 miles from the Mexican border in Weslaco, Texas. I worked in a juice packing plant second shift. I was not only the sole English speaking employee but probably the only American. Border security is a joke.

I hope this can be settled without throwing a bunch of our friends in jail or deporting them while strengthening our borders at the same time.

While I applaud your child's putting a face to the problem and seeing it from an honest point of view.

How can this be related to the 60s? None of those people were here illegally whose rights were violated. They committed no crimes other than the color of their skin which is not a crime.

I don't doubt there are some pretty nice people out there.
Being here illegally has no skin color. If a law is broken a law is broken. I'm having a hard time of grasping the logic with this one. The way our system works--there would be a delay in any fix going into affect b/c it takes time. And then it would be a race to beat the deadline and more would border cross illegally. Why is it just One ethinicity who would get the "free pass". Why not others?

Just my 2 cents.

I'm curious if i can go into any country and rally for my rights to be there without going through the proper channels.

In the sixties I protested for causes that I felt strongly about. It would be hard for me to punish my son for doing the same thing.

Secure the borders and deal with the problem of the people who are already here. But we have to sercure the borders first. I'm not saying close the borders, just secure them so we know who is entering our country. I can't see sending over 25 million people home. First the countries where they came from probably would not accept them back. But remember the law is the law and should be inforced. :confused3
