The Great DVC Purchase Debate...

Yah the current direct prices spin my head. Even the AP discount is too high for us (they quoted us $1400 for 3 nights in a hotel room in July for bcv- no thank you).

Just happy I got in pre restrictions in 2011 and again during late 2014. The only way I would stay deluxe onsite in a non dvc resort would be a conference rate. I've seen the rates at $250!

Rack rate for villas are in my opinion inflated, in order to show a greater saving when buying DVC.

Suite rates are comparable so I doubt they are inflated by DVC. Studio rates are comparable to deluxe room rates.

In fact I doubt DVD has much say in resort rates.

So we made a decision....we bought 50 pts direct through Disney! Use year is March and we are at SSR! I'm already stalking the resale market for add on points :)

Good choice. We got 160 points at SSR back in 2008 for a (compared to now) fantastic price. We love SSR, but we're also wanting to try out the different resorts, so having the 11 month home resort would be nice. The problem is, the cost for DVC direct to get the 11 month is not worth the savings in resale. For us, most of the kids have flown the nest, so we may add any more points anyway...we'll need less points (smaller room) than we once did.

You may want to reconsider the order of your plans since it's much easier to buy a resale purchase first than second.

Dean, I don't know that I understand this. You're saying buy resale first and then get a DVC direct after? How is this easier and/or better?

For a new buyer, or anyone who's willing to consider a different UY, it's better because it gives you access to all options including different UY, home resorts and number of points. It's easy to add a retail purchase one you have the resale assuming it's available at all. Having the flexibility also gives you a good chance at getting a better price because you're neither locked in nor desperate for a specific option. These advantage far outweighs any potential price increases for retail IMO unless one is looking at a lot of points.

It's easiest to have a single UY, especially if one of your contracts is small. When buying resale you will only have access to what is listed for sale so you're limited that way thus it's much easier to buy resale if you don't have a specific UY you are 100% tied to. You can then evaluate the contracts on points available, price range and UY. When you buy direct Disney will sell you the same UY so that's the easier of the two as you will always get the same from them. Current points at a fixed price. Resale has more variables.

Also there is a minimum Direct purchase of 100 points (sometimes 50 points). But once you buy points through resale, the minimum direct "add on" becomes 25 points. At least that is how I understand it.

We are currently in the midst of trying to purchase a BLT contract through the resale market (we are waiting on ROFR). My husband and I have thought about purchasing a small contract direct from Disney to get the "perks" that resale loses out on.

Has anyone done this? Is is worth it?

I, too, am curious on this. Less on whether or not it is worth it, and more on whether anyone has successfully done this with the sole purpose of getting that membership card. It would be very Disney to say, "oh, to get a membership card, it needs to be your initial purchase and for a minimum of 50 points. Sorry we didn't tell you that up front."

Jewel - I've been thinking of doing the same thing. I'm still split on whether it's "worth it", but it is absolutely the only method I'd consider for getting a membership card. I think the benefits are nice, but I know I wouldn't make up the $2,000+ difference in upfront cost any time soon - especially if I assume a discount rate (~7%). With that being said, I'm still thinking about it (although I'm currently inclined to pass), so there's definitely an emotional aspect (for me at least) of feeling like part of the club.

Right there with you on all points. :rainbow:
