The fort and hurricane milton

Better news this morning for the Fort and WDW. Latest predictions have Milton shifting slightly more to the south. Orlando and WDW is still within the "cone", it appears it won't see the worst of the winds.

Wind predictions from the NWS are also lower.

Less than 24 hours out, these predictions should be closer to where it actually goes.

Latest. Looks like it's going to hit as a CAT 3, not CAT 4. That's kinda good. So here's the latest map where we are:

Don't know why I couldn't drop these in on the previous post, but it worked now. Top screenshot is closeup of where we are.
Bottom is down south a little with all the red tornado boxes.

Disney called today and offered to move us to AOA. We declined as its not comparable to the fort cabins at all imo. We will have the deposit refunded back to us and will hopefully get to plan a new trip to the fort soon. Will miss the Halloween decorations as we certainly wont be able to make this trip this month.

@ucf_knight

Sorry you are cancelling, but totally understand. AOA is OK, but it isn't the Fort.

Here is the latest wind predictions from the NWS. Overall track is unchanged. The slight shift to the south continues, but the eyewall has expanded slightly meaning the stronger winds extend out further than yesterday. As a result, the expected wind speeds at Lake Buena Vista- (WDW) are up to minimal Cat 1 (75mph) with gusts to 90mph. Hopefully this bodes well for the Fort and all its trees.

There are also multiple tornado warnings out now. Most are south and west of the Fort, but as Milton continues eastward, that will likely expand.

Watching all my aviation subscription radars along with aviation reporting… yay dry air getting into storm… still destructive, dangerous … but I will take ANY lowering of winds and increasing of central pressure I can get. Still in communications with my parents in Venice. Venice airport 19 minutes ago steady over 30 mph with gusts over 50….

The storm paths are unpredictable, we checked into the fort two days before Ian was headed there. We went to the parks and when we got back the message on our windshield was everybody was to move out the next day. There were a lot of lines to stand in. About 400 campers went to the magic kingdom parking lot and people were assigned to disney hotels. Fortunately Ian turned south and we had a week stay at Port Orleans. Just alternating wind and rain for two days. Our camper survived the rains and wind at the parking lot. We were on a month long trip with 10 days at the fort. With yesterdays forecast for Orlando, I think I would have hooked on and headed north if I could have gotten enough fuel. We were in Auburn Alabama to see our daughter during Helene this year. Just a lot of rain, but not much fun camping. We didn't dry out until we went west to Memphis.

There has been a reference (or two) on the other DIS boards (Resorts? Theme Parks?) that Milton-related information was being passed on to Travel Agents with Disney guest reservations (who passed the info to THEIR affected clients) but the same info was not reaching guests at the same time who booked WDW reservations on their own.

I get using all communication channels to discuss closures, cancellation and rebooking changes, but the info was not reaching everyone in anywhere close to the same time which created some confusion.

You would think the Disney-related websites for the theme parks and affected resorts would get an immediate update (as the quickest way to spread the word) as policy decisions were made and communicated elsewhere but Disney apparently said, "nah". :sad2:
I would think this too.... they could use MDE to send message to anyone with a reservation even for dinner. People with TAs would get informed twice but that would be fine

I find communication skills from many corporations and individuals need a huge review. There is nothing worse than not hearing back on information someone may need ASAP and they can't get in touch via a phone call (either waiting on the line for hours or no response to a voicemail), via online chat or via text or emails.

Our little Winnebago Vita Class C did ok in the driveway! Got lucky the house was blocking most of the winds. And unless a surprise shows later, it seems dry inside. No easy feat for 10” a rain in a day.

So if the Fort opens back up, we will be there for Halloween 🎃

Some damage to the house, flooring needs to come up in a bedroom. Tree down but not on anything. No power. All in all not bad for the I-4 corridor that took a punch from Milton

Early reports from around WDW sound like damage was minimal. No word on the Fort.

Two friends in the area have checked in fine. Two others nothing yet.

***Update***
Third friend rode it out at his friends house 6 miles inland. He posted pics and video about midnight when they were in the eye. The calm and quiet were erie. And they knew they still had the back half to go through. I hadn't seen anything since the eye post, but he replied back about an hour ago that everyone is fine. No idea about his house on the island though.

Jim,

Updating your excellent zoom-in of the Milton track near WDW.

Track goes over the World Drive/Highway 192 intersection.

View attachment 901489

Wonder how this track will hold up.

ED

1. The "TRACK" plotted Hurricane Milton would go directly over WDW.
. . . This was predicted for several days prior to landfall.
. . . During the few hours before it hit, the storm's path drifted slightly south.
. . . Basically, the Eye missed WDW.
2. The end result was little damage to the immediate area.
3. Since my 2005 retirement, we have personally experienced "THE DISNEY BUBBLE".
4. The story goes:
. . . Walt's ghost watches over "The World" and protects it from natural calamities.
. . . The ghost's force-field is known as "The Disney Bubble".
. . . The bubble makes certain "The Happiest Place" remains happy.
5. My wife and I worked at WDW, and she retired from there.
6. We have seen first-hand how bad weather moves past or around WDW.
7. Terrible weather does not usually go through or over WDW.
8. We live approx 18-minutes door-to-door from WDW, depending upon traffic lights.
9. During Milton our immediate area recorded 78-mph gusts, but we saw little of it.
. . . There was hardly any damage to our property or neighborhood.
. . . We lost ONE vertical slat from our fence and re-nailed it in about 5-minutes.
. . . No other damage for us, other than a few very small palm tree limbs.

"UNCLE WALT" CONTINUES TO PROTECT HIS WORLD AND OURS!

Um .... the 13th is tomorrow (Sunday)? :duck:
Ha!! You're right! They open tomorrow Sunday the 13th. It's been Sunday all day for me so 'opening tomorrow' was Monday! Retirement will scramble your days like that, ya know.

Retirement will scramble your days like that, ya know.

I understand completely, Stormy.:worship:

We (me and DW) have been retired since 2020 and when our (working) kids call to discuss date-related stuff, I admit I'm a little lost.

As I tell the kids, to me and DW, "EVERYDAY IS SATURDAY".

So they have to BE SPECIFIC about days they're coming to visit, blah blah blah. I also put a lot of things on a 12-month calendar to help know 'where' we're supposed to be 'when'. Like our DISMeet later this month.

ED

PS - the kids will call us on the weekend and say stuff like, "what are you going to do tomorrow?" And I tell them I'll wait until I wake up then and figure out which FIRE to put out FIRST. And, if there's no fire :confused3, we MIGHT take a nap after lunch. :cloud9:

PPS - but to stay on topic, when a hurricane (or related storm) comes at us from the Gulf Coast, we hunker down and wait for the power to go out. As it always does. For about 12 hours. We just "don't open the refrigerator". :sad2:
