The financially irresponsible WDW trip! [June 25th: p.45, posts 668 & 669]

You lost something? At first I though, oh no, it was her kids. But then I saw later in a post that it was the passports.
And now you are probably thinking how could I even think that you could lose the kids? Well, it happens, When I was a child my parents drove off and left my sister and I at a gas station in Garmish. And due to a miscomunication and Kent and I driving separate cars, our kids were left at a family reunion, yes thank god they were with family, but I felt like mother of the year (not) when Kent and I pull into the driveway and neither of us has the kids.

Anyway, thanks for the recap, that was nice, plus a little taste of what's to come.

Wow, Deb! 6 months already?
Oh well, gotta drag it out and make it last as long as possible, right? Keeps all the magic out there in front of you. At least, that's what I think.
Keep it coming -- looking forward very much to the rest. ;)

Part 25: Our World Showcase evening!

(Still) Day 9: 1st November, 2006

So we're off to World Showcase on this lovely evening and can hardly contain our excitement - we're gonna visit more countries and see my very favourite 'attraction' in all of Disney World - ILLUMINATIONS!!!! It's dark, the heat has gone down a bit, and World Showcase looks beautiful.

I love the end of the day around dusk!

Okay, let's move it, where to first?; will we run through each country?, gotta see them, gotta see them, we already saw the UK but must investigate it further and then move on, hurry, hurry, hurr........ hang on, we're starving, might as well stop right here at Harry Ramsdens - basically a stone's throw from the entrance. :lmao: Hey, we gotta get the practical stuff like hunger out of the way, right?

You mean you didnt have each minute and meal planned???

So DH stayed to wait for the order and I took the kids across the road to those lovely tables and chairs behind the little Tea Shop. What a gorgeous area this is to sit, chat and eat in peace. Here's a photo (from Allearsnet) of that general area....
e_uk4.jpg

Alice had fallen asleep in the stroller and it took a bit of manoeuvering to get her to the only free table which was behind another table where a couple sat. I needed to go to the right of the woman to get the stroller past because next to that was a little square grassy area with a step up. "Excuse me please". Nothing. Hmmm, perhaps she didn't hear me? "Excuse me, can I get past you please?". Nope. Nothing. She's chatting to her friend/DH/bf (in English by the way) and completely ignoring me! Uh, one last try. "Hello there?"
heeeelllllooooo.gif
Nothing! Her chair was pulled waaaay back so she was taking up about 4 feet and could easily have moved in a couple of feet without too much bother. But no. Instead she chose to ignore me. I had no choice but to half lift the stroller onto the grass (with Wayne's help) - 2 wheels on the kerb and 2 wheels on the ground - and then half lift it back down again whilst squeezing myself past her. So I did this to her:
argue1-1.gif

...................
well, in my HEAD I did that. So finally the boys and Alice and I took our seats and, as I turned to get a proper look at our cranky neighbour, I noticed she was staring at us and muttering something to her friend. What IS her problem? I couldn't fathom it, unless she doesn't believe in kids being at Disney World.

I have to say the same thing happened to me this weekend. I was so busy talking intently with someone, I didnt realize someone else was talking to me. I was totally tuned out. And here they were asking me to sit down in an empty seat. Gosh, when I realized they were talking to me I apologized like 10 times. I felt really bad. Soooo, perhaps she was just distracted and didnt hear you, even though you asked three times, since later on she was nicer to you and your DH. Just a thought though at the time I am sure you wanted to strangle her!

I saw DH coming back soon after. Wait! What is this strange phenomenon? Do I see said lady smiling at him? Do I see her......... what? No? It can't be. Do my eyes deceive me? Is she actually pushing in to let DH past??? Yes, she is. Either she's got an attack of the guilts OR she's a man-woman, you know the type? Women who smile, giggle and flick their hair back shyly when they're around men but whenever they encounter women they give them demon-spawn looks and wish them nothing but ill-will?

The food was yum! We (Garth and I) don't eat meat, but we eat fish. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, what's with that? But it's just the way it's come about over the years. I haven't eaten meat in 23 years but fish came and went. DH doesn't really eat fish at all and then Wayne eats everything, the works. Anyway as fish goes, this fish was good and pretty genuine "fish and chip" stuff I would say. So a thumbs up for Harry Ramsdens (or is it called the Yorkshire County Fish Shop??).

Ugg I dont care for fish but love the chips/fries!!!

Alice had woken up a couple of minutes after we sat down and I managed to feed her a yogurt and some fish too. And you know what happened? The strangest thing. I thought I saw demon spawn woman (DSW) looking my way and, sure enough, when I looked back there she was smiling sheepishly at Alice. All I can think is that she'd had a nasty run in with a stroller and/or it's toddler-owner earlier and when she saw us coming she assumed Alice was trouble too. Well my mother always said "don't lower yourself" so I took that advice and smiled back at DSW. So there! [NOTE: we meet her twin brother, Demon Spawn Man, at Cirque du Soleil the very next night!!!!]

At this stage Wayne is practically hyper-ventilating and can't keep still - he is so keen to get moving and seeing and doing. Perhaps we're all more tired than we realise as we are now on our 9th day, but this night would be the start of a series of comments from Wayne such as "why are we always stopping and starting?", "why can't we get anything done?", "why is everything taking SO long?". And he was right. From tonight on, things took twice as long and there were far more interruptions. Odd really. But it was still all good. Or mostly good. No worries there.

We passed the border into Canada (!) and felt a teeny sense of achievement at reaching a second country, even if it is a whole hour later and even if we did already see this one today. We had a quick glance around, liked what we saw but decided to carry on to Mexico. But before we left we became aware of a band playing up ahead (still in Canada) [they sounded almost identical to a celtic rock band DH played with years ago - he's a bass player - used to do it full-time but still does it part-time these days]. Then we happen upon them and saw that it was Off Kilter.

Now, let me digress a second to say that back home, everywhere we go, DH knows someone. Everywhere. I wouldn't have expected the same thing to happen thousands of miles from home obviously. But, lo and behold, DH starts laughing and said "hey that's Mark". "Mark who?" I say. "Mark Weldon, there with the band, the bass player, remember him, from years ago?". I vaguely recall the name. The thing is, the music scene here in our city is quite small really and most musicians from the 80s and 90s know each other as many of them would have had stints with the same bands at one time or another. So we went up to see them playing and DH waved at Mark and he got a smile and a wave back. As it turned out, they were finished their set just a few minutes later so Mark came down to chat. DH and he caught up, compared notes, threw some names out there (mutual musician friends and acquaintances) and it was all very nice. But, suddenly it struck me, as I overheard them talking about familiar venues and places and names that it was all very like, well, being at home in a way. It was eating into my fantasy holiday time. :sad2: ;) Time to move along now! So we said our goodbyes and by now, it was just 30 minutes to the time we were to meet Mike and K at Mexico for Illuminations. What? Where did the time go? Again!

Every place we go, my DH knows someone too. We ran into our lawyer last year at Disney.

Quick stop for a photo.....

Kermit just had to get in on the shot!!
FH010001.jpg

Cute :rotfl:
Ok, so we're off.... we're on a roll, must keep moving, no more stopping, hurry, hurry, hurry, off to the next countr....... oh hang on, there's a store, a big one and I'm drawn to it!!! Let's stop here. :woohoo: So we did! What a great place!!! I think it's called Port of Entry (that sounds wrong though but it's on my receipt). I bought Alice a little Mickey/Minnie mobile phone which she still loves to this day. Wayne bought a nice pin and I can't remember what Garth bought. All I know is I wanted to buy everything!!! The only thing is, anyone ever notice that Disney CMs in stores tend to take a looooooooooong time at checkout? There were 2 people in front of me and I was in line for 20 minutes. It was teeth-clenchingly, head-scratchingly frustrating. Still love the store though!

I hope I have time to check it out...sounds loverly.

So we went straight to meet Mike and K in the agreed place - between Canada and Mexico but we couldn't see them. Oh no, not this again! Then we spotted them in the area specially designated for wheelchairs and ECVs. Oh, of course, I'd forgotten that they'd be there. This was awkward - Mike was beckoning us to come forward but I honestly didn't want to take up space in this area when wheelchair/ECV users might need it. What to do?! They kept calling us so we decided to go to them just for a minute and then move elsewhere so I asked the CM guarding the rope at this entrance if we could join them just for a minute. He asked if we were staying to watch Illuminations and when I said yes but we would find our own spot he said "no, you can stay as long as you're with the ECV user". Well, ok, but I still felt bad. We went to Mike and K, chatted a while and then I said I'd feel better if we got our own spot but Mike insisted that we stay so we did with the proviso that if we saw a wheelchair/ECV user trying to gain access to the area we'd move and also that we'd sit on the pavement to give anyone who came along behind us a better chance to see.

Garth needed the bathroom. Ok, no problem, DH said he'd take him. How long can they be, right? Everything's good - we've got our spot, the kids are happy, we're having a nice chat with Mike and K and we're just 30 minutes from Illuminations. Excellent..........

Continued in next post.....

:sad2: Men!

Not a new chapter, just a recap!

It’s been six months this week since I started my Trip Report. :woohoo: but also  - I mean, in the name of all that's holy, why is it taking me so long to get this out there?! I guess I never anticipated when I started this that:
a) it would be so incredibly time-consuming to write (although it’s also a lot of fun!!), and
b) anyone would have the slightest interest in hearing what I have to say....

So here I am, 6 months on, and only just over half way through our trip.

So I’ve decided a little recap is in order! For those who started late and skipped over the first few chapters (
nono.gif
;)) but mostly for those who’ve read the whole lot (
imnotworthy1.gif
) and forget (cause I couldn’t possibly expect you to remember) who we are; what our motivations for this trip were; and the practical things like dates/accommodation etc. here’s my little recap......

What this trip is ....
Our second trip to WDW. Our first trip was in June 2005 - we stayed in New York for 3 nights followed by Disney World for 12 nights. It was the most luxurious holiday we’d ever taken and one I’d feared would never happen because with us, money is always an issue. At the time I reckoned this would be a one-off thing. But we all fell in love with Disney World (it surpassed all our expectations and believe me, our expectations were sky high) and we simply had to get back there so we strugged and sacrified and put things on the long finger (like the fact that our crappy car was crying out to be sent to a scrap yard) and we made a second trip (the one this TR is about) a reality!!

So this second trip started 24th October 2006 and finished on 10th November 2006.

Where we stayed...
Days 1 to 5: All Star Music
Day 5: Doubletree Oceanfront Hotel, Cocoa Beach
Day 6 to 11: Boardwalk Villas
Day 11 to 13: All Star Movies
Day 13 to 17: Boardwalk Villas

Reminder of who we are...
DH, 42. His favourite character is Grumpy. He’s got a great sense of humour. I mean, honestly, that doesn’t do him justice - he’s the funniest person I’ve ever met!!! He’s also a very talented musician. He doesn’t do that for a living anymore but it'll always be his life’s passion!

There’s me, Deb, 37 (at time of trip) - huge Disney fan. I’m self-employed and I work at home as a graphic designer. Some weeks I work 10 hours and other weeks I put in 70 hours. Like most things in my life, it’s unpredictable!

Our eldest son: ‘Wayne’, 12 years old at the time of this trip. His favourite attractions in WDW are Rock ‘n Rollercoaster, Test Track, Splash Mountain, POTC, Philharmagic and also he loves World Showcase. He has a passion for music and is a great guitarist - plays electric and classical and also studies music theory. Oh and he loves his iPod!

Our youngest son: ‘Garth’, 9 years old when the trip started but turned 10 in WDW. His favourite character is Goofy but also has a soft spot for the main man, Mickey! :thumbsup2 His favourite attractions are Rock ‘n Rollercoaster, ToT, Test Track, Philharmagic, POTC and Expedition Everest. He plays piano, studies music theory, loves reading and is a great artist!

Last but not least is our little girl who I’ve been referring to as ‘Alice’ cause that’s who she dressed up as for Halloween. But her very favourite Disney characters these days are Ariel, Snow White, Buzz & Woody and Mike & Sully! Her brothers adore her and she adores them. Her latest habit is to stand in front of us, feet crossed, hands on hip and tell us what’s what!!!

What I’ve covered so far...
Day 1: Our flights and our arrival in WDW!
Day 2: Shopping, Swimming & Downtown Disney
Day 3: Animal Kingdom & Blizzard Beach
Day 4: Magic Kingdom
Day 5: Cocoa Beach
Day 6: Cocoa Beach & Kennedy Space Center
Day 7: MGM
Day 8: Magic Kingdom & MNSSHP
Day 9: Epcot

Still to come...
Day 10: Epcot (Alice finally meets Snow White!!) & Cirque de Soleil (Wow! But also, who invited Demon Spawn Woman’s twin brother?)

Day 11: Cape May (where Alice decides to play hard to get with Chip), Animal Kingdom (“oh no, where’s Alice’s ‘Lion’?) & All Star Movies (checking in with a very wet backside!)

Day 12: Shopping and do we or don’t we go to Universal?

Day 13: Garth’s 10th Birthday!!! MGM, Planet Hollywood (ugh!), Boardwalk (mmmm) & Chef Mickeys (Wow! A Birthday to remember!)

Day 14: Typhoon Lagoon (woohoo!! Who knew you could have fun at a water park??!!); Alice and I hang out at The Boardwalk (where Alice is crowned Seashore Sweets Princess of the Day whilst at the same time committing petty theft ); and the men folk check out DisneyQuest.

Day 15: Magic Kingdom (where Garth gets a wonderful surprise!)

Day 16: MGM & Epcot (where Deb sheds lots of tears! :()

Day 17: Our last day :( A final look at Downtown Disney followed by lots of tears and not just “going home” tears either - more like: “OMG, I can't believe we lost them, how could we have lost *them*, how are we gonna get home now??” [Don’t worry, we didn’t lose one of our kids but what we did lose was extremely important].

So that’s my little (or, er, as always not so little) recap to help those who’ve understandably forgotten some details and to mark the 6 month point in this TR.

Thanks again for reading folks!!! I really appreciate all the feedback. :)

New chapter soon!

  Hey Deb ... loved the recap! I have been gone awhile and I apologize. I just have to concentrate a few TR (yours made the cut  ) and my own. I feel ya when you say you're busy!!! But we all love your writing so whenever you can, we would love to read...but no pressure Deb! :flower3:

Just checking in Deb, love the photo you shared of your towel animal. Hopefully towel animal, Pink Panther, Barney and well-loved teddy are still enjoying each other's company!

:)

Hi again Deb! :yay: I actually have few minutes to myself here and I wanted to ask your opinion. I love your table of contents at the top of your trippie. Should I do the same thing on my pre-trippie or just wait till I do my actual trip report??? Thanks for your help.

Okay, everyone. I've finally done it. I've read all 40 pages. In two days, mind you. Ok...I'll just sit here and wait for the rest....LOL. Great trippie....loved it...more please..
Lisa

By the way...we are working out a trip to Doolin...so as I see it...you can keep writing, or just tell us in person when we stop by your house...LOL.

Where does the time go? :confused3 I thought I was on a roll with this TR but it looks like it's been forever since I posted. I'm hoping it's because I've been busy but part of me is dreading that it's because so much time has lapsed I just can't recall enough to write about it. That might not be the case. It's only when I go to write really that I find out if there's a chapter in me or not. We'll see. I do so want to finish this TR.

due to a miscomunication and Kent and I driving separate cars, our kids were left at a family reunion, yes thank god they were with family, but I felt like mother of the year (not) when Kent and I pull into the driveway and neither of us has the kids.

:lmao:

No lost kids on our trip, thank God! But we did, er, forget to bring our precious newborn with us one time. :scared: 'Alice' was born just 2 weeks before the day 'Garth' made his Holy Communion. We were treating our family to a meal in a nice restaurant to celebrate. When we pulled into the car park, my brother and his wife and kids pulled in at the same time. So we got chatting, while walking to the restaurant. I noticed my SIL was looking around a bit with a puzzled expression. I was going on and on about the boys and the new baby - proud mommy and all that. Then SIL said "um, and where is she?". I looked at DH, then at the boys and realised nobody had her. She was back in her baby seat in the car, fast asleep. OMG! I felt like a total nut. I never ran so fast in all my life!!!! :rotfl2: The weird thing is that kind of thing ONLY happens when family are around, watching. :scared:

Oh, rats, I'm all caught up! Now I have to wait with the rest of you!
Loved the recap, Deb, and I'm looking forward to reading about the rest of your holiday!

Thanks so much packerbeth!! :thumbsup2

Hey Deb ... loved the recap! I have been gone awhile and I apologize. I just have to concentrate a few TR (yours made the cut

:woohoo: That's just cause I hardly ever write anything.

Wow, Deb! 6 months already?

Keep it coming -- looking forward very much to the rest. ;)

Nice to see you again z! And thanks!!! :) Any more trips planned?

I'm really enjoying your trip report!!

:flower3:

Hopefully towel animal, Pink Panther, Barney and well-loved teddy are still enjoying each other's company!:)

Oh no Twingle! Barney was almost an obsession with 'Alice' but since she turned 3 she's cast him out. He's soooooooooo last week now.

Oh definitely do it Cathy. Although I will say my own table of contents is quite cumbersome - I've seen much neater ones. It's so helpful for new readers though. Go for it! :thumbsup2

Woohoo!!! Thanks Lisa. I really appreciate it! :woohoo:

By the way...we are working out a trip to Doolin...so as I see it...you can keep writing, or just tell us in person when we stop by your house...LOL.

:lmao: Oh we live SOOOOOOOOO far from Doolin. Honestly. :rolleyes1

Doolin is beautiful! It's a tiny little village (really TINY!) but it's a great place to base yourself as there's so much terrific scenery nearby.

It's part of an area referred to as The Burren. The Burren is made up of the strangest limestone rock formations which are amazing to see.

Oh, those pics are so beautiful! We have a trip on the back burner for 2009 to Ireland. Chuck's family is from Ireland. I am so looking forward to it.

Hi Deb...thanks for your input.
Hey....I absolutely love those pics of Ireland.....I am sure we went to see those cliffs but my memory is a little vague.
We your devoted public will patiently wait while you bring us another terrific installment! :surfweb:

Don't worry about your TR, we'll be here once you remember more! :)

Just want to give you a quick BUMP back to the 1st page. Now I've got to go back and read what I've missed over the past several days. :goodvibes

Yeah! I'm all caught up. :surfweb: Thanks for the update - the refresher course was greatly appreciated. :lmao: My gosh! Has it really been six months? I guess I need to get a life . . . nah! :rotfl2: Life only gets in the way when you're trying to keep up with trip reports! :rotfl: I'm glad you're only half way through - I really don't want your trippie to end. :sad2: I feel like you're family - even when you're finished you'll come back and let us know what's happening in your world, won't you? Pretty please???? :flower3:

The photos from Ireland are awesome! Thanks so much for sharing. :goodvibes

I thought of you today. I received a DVC dvd in the mail. How nice of you to have them send it to me. :rotfl2:

Can't wait to read more! Hint! Hint! Hint!

Love your pics Deb! I would love to visit Ireland someday! We will patiently wait at our computers for your next installment:surfweb:

That's it -- I've been lurking for @ 2 weeks and now I want to join in. I've been so thoroughly entertained by your report. Some parts I was reading at work (did I admit that?) and I actually had to leave my desk to go in the ladies room and laugh. Your children are adorable!!!

er, sorry, posted by mistake, er, on my own thread, I'll be back later.
You got us all excited then thinking there was a new installment :rotfl2:

Your photos look so similar to the south west coast of Scotland where we went last year, really stunning!
