Trip Report The Dry Heat Expedition (Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Disneyland)--UPDATE 6/12 (KSC and DTD)

That hike does sound really fun! But I totally understand Julie's hesitation and don't blame her for skipping it. Glad you all had a good time and found someone to actually frame pictures of your family AND the amazing view.

Ugh, the Grand Canyon North Rim! :sad2: That has to be what I attempted to go to many years ago. All I can remember now is driving down a very long and winding road (probably about 42 miles worth...), then finding the road/parking at the end closed. Couldn't see a thing. Drove all the way back and confirmed that, yes, the sign at the entrance to the road said it was OPEN. :headache: Not so much. And I was only passing through with limited time, so I have yet to actually see the Grand Canyon. Someday, though! Funny - you encountered a closed sign at your intended stop right afterwards, while I was still thinking about this.

Glad your travels were going smoothly. Except for that darn blowout thing Drew pulled. :rotfl: Guess that explains why he looked so happy earlier - he had PLANS. Or maybe he was expressing his displeasure at being left out of the hike. Thank goodness he didn't go with and do that on the hike, I guess. :confused3

I'm sorry but I laughed outloud at Drew sitting at the breakfast table grinning from ear to ear despite the fact that he was up kept you up half the night.

I don't blame Julie one bit for being too nervous to take Drew on the hike. I'm sure she would have been nervous the entire time. Anytime that we've been someplace that involves hiking and heights, I have to leave John in charge of the kids. I can barely keep charge of myself. :rolleyes1

The view from the overlook at the end of the trail is absolutely gorgeous! Your pictures look fantastic so I can only imagine what it looked like "in real life".

Oops, the facilities are closed? Oops, look at the color of the bottom of Drew's shirt! And, yet, he still smiles!

12:07 a.m.—Take a wild freakin’ guess.

3:22 a.m.—Seriously contemplating putting Ny-Quil in a bottle.

7:00 a.m.—Who wants breakfast?

Yah, that picture of everyone at breakfast there…
That look on Drew’s face…

Yep, he’s mocking you.

Julie’s nervous about the trail. We’ve looked at some pictures online, and it has everything you could possibly want in a hiking trail: a climb up a rock face, sheer drop-offs right at the edge, rickety bridges, caves…I mean, who wouldn’t want to try that, especially while carrying a 6-month-old baby?

I’m about at out of shape as I could be, but I’d like to give that a shot. DW… likely not. And we no longer have young’ens anywhere close to the infant range, but I don’t see her doing more than waving bye and keeping her phone at the ready to dial 911 as I head out on my own.

I didn’t want her to miss out on the views, but she said she didn’t think she’d be able to enjoy it if she was anxious about the baby the whole time. So she told me to go on ahead with the big kids while she stayed behind to nurse the baby and let him nap in the van.

Her turn to take one for the team.
It’s an odd truth, but the word “Parent” is a synonym for both “Selfless” and “Lunacy”

As we move along, we encounter rock overhangs, narrow paths along canyon edges…

Rickety, slightly unstable wooden bridges threatening possible doom…

Partial caves…

…and the four of us agree that this is easily one of the coolest, most fun hikes we’ve ever done in our lives.

Certainly looks and sounds like it. And…
You even found someone along the way that knows how to properly compose a picture.

Heck of a morning there.
Stunning pictures of some incredibly beautiful places as well.
At the risk of tempting fate, I might go so far as to call it auspicious.
But it’s unwise to tempt fate, ya’ know.

9:52 a.m.—We’re back in Arizona. We’re moving along pretty well. You’re not going to believe this, but Dave has to go to the bathroom.

Shocking…

Thankfully, we’re in the middle of nowhere, there’s not a lot of traffic, and David is a boy. We use this time to reinforce the lesson that for boys, the world is your toilet.

And he gets in an extra hike for the day.
Albeit a fairly shot one I’m sure, but still.

10:38 a.m.—We pass right by the entrance to Grand Canyon National Park.

Tough choice there, having to bypass the North Rim.
Wise? Probably…
Prudent? Certianly…
But still a tough call.

Once we leave the pines of the Kaibab National Forest, we descend into the desert. The view gets a lot more interesting here, as we drive along the outer edge of Vermillion Cliffs National Recreation Area. We snap a picture here that looks to me like a classic Road Trip shot:

That’s a particularly mesmerizing image you got there.
Ya’ know… that’d make a good cover picture for someone’s Facebook page.

11:38 a.m.—We’ve made it as far as the Colorado River. So far, everything has been going exceedingly well.

Exceedingly good stop at Zion in the AM…
Exceedingly good travel through the desert up to midday…
And you openly defied fate by defining these events exceedingly…

If I were paid to write screen plays, it’d be right about here that I’d start putting in a few mishaps and unforeseen circumstances.

The plan is to stop at the parking lot/visitor center for the Navajo Bridge, the distinctive span that crosses the Colorado. This is another spot that I checked out ahead of time on Google Earth and thought to myself, “Self? That would make a perfect place to stop for lunch.”

We pull up to the entrance and—

Aaaaaaaaand, there it is.

Well. That’s inconvenient. Now what do we do?

Take a lesson from Dave…
You’re in the middle of the great wide empty (beautiful, yes, but empty).
You can stop pretty much anywhere.

11:40 a.m.—We cross the bridge. Just on the other side is another parking lot, leading to some tents where Native Americans are selling jewelry and other crafts. I guess this will have to do for lunch.

Well that’ll work too…

Luckily, there’s a path going up to the bridge so we can still check it out on this side.

And yet, no images of said engineering feat made an appearance within the confines of this epic narrative...

Strange.

As I said, they’re going exceedingly well. Julie and I are very pleasantly surprised at how easy this drive has been to this point, given how much we were dreading it earlier.

There you go again…

Nothing can stop us now!

Remember, “Fate” does not deal kindly with those who disregard her presence.

Wait, was his shirt always that color?

I’m pretty sure the car seat wasn’t that color before.

Right on queue.
A full blown containment breach

::yes:: That would be a suitable choice of interjection at this juncture.

I’d better stop this journal entry right here. This is gonna take a while.

It could be worse…
Were your name “Clark”, this is the spot in the story where you’d have inadvertently launched the Family Truckster off the edge of a ravine.

So much for being caught up. Seems like you are following in Kathy's footsteps. :badpc:

12:07 a.m.—Take a wild freakin’ guess.

3:22 a.m.—Seriously contemplating putting Ny-Quil in a bottle.

7:00 a.m.—Who wants breakfast?
Only up 2 times? :thumbsup2

Maybe she was nervous you would do the baby 'dangling over the edge of the cliff' trick. :scared1:

…and the four of us agree that this is easily one of the coolest, most fun hikes we’ve ever done in our lives.
Great pictures from the hike!

A half mile isn’t too terribly far to walk. It’s just enough to make it feel like you’re working towards a goal. And that goal lies at the end of the trail:

IMG_5878.JPG
Beautiful views! I'm sure the pictures don't do it much justice.

8:40 a.m.—We make our way back down the trail to find a calm, serene Mommy and a happy baby waiting for us.

IMG_5902.JPG
Heeeelllllllooooooooo, down there!

9:52 a.m.—We’re back in Arizona. We’re moving along pretty well. You’re not going to believe this, but Dave has to go to the bathroom. Really? Again? Should of given Dave one of those water bottles instead of giving it to Drew.

Nothing? NOTHING???? I think you need to re-evaluate the situation.

Oh, you did that. Well, in that case click on either link above. Or just look at the next picture......

Drew is a keeper... Beautiful smile and seems like a happy baby overall, you are very lucky.

But he does seem to be mocking you with that smile, like yes I kept you up, I will nap in the car as drive and then, you get to clean me up later!

Sorry the lunch spot was closed but you did have a work around.

You have some beautiful pictures, can't wait to see it in person.

Great pictures along the route. Sorry your lunch spot was closed. Eeewwww on Drew! :rotfl2:

Interesting route choice. What made you choose 89A over 89? I got the idea that 89A covered more mountainous terrain than 89. Perhaps I was mistaken. I would have gladly skipped the part of 89 that we took. Thats one of the places we hit snow and where we saw the fatal accident.

Maybe he thinks he's in the war and needs to keep watch. :scratchin

We have called him "The Town Crier" in the past.

Look kids, the back side of a tunnel!

Ooh, a sequel to the Jungle Cruise!

Glad you went to Hawaii and got some 1 lane driving experience there.

That's really the only reason I went.

Drew doesn't seem to have any problem sleeping now.

What a little punk.

Thank God for your wife. :thumbsup2

I say that everyday.

Hey, it a good picture. Know anyone with photoshopping skills?

:rolleyes1

Of course he does!

Oh, you're mean! :rolleyes2

Ohhh, you're really mean. :rotfl:

Years from now, Scotty will tell stories of the scars he bears.

Great views!

Amazing!

::yes::

It's ok.... we forgive you. :flower3:

Yeah, surrrre you do.

Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?

More importantly, do they swear to clean their rooms, and stop asking if we're there yet?

Let me save you some money... buy this number sticker. It costs a whopping $.50!

Pic fail... try this link

Nice!:thumbsup2 That's a lot easier.

Glad dinner was up to your standards... it looked ready good!

Apparently "up to my standards" means Fritos. :thumbsup2

Good idea giving the kids some downtime. The views from the pool are just stunning.

::yes::

Hey, whatta ya know.... I'm all caught up! :cool1:

Well, you were for about 2 minutes. :rotfl2:

Drew is really a smiley thing after being up all night!

Yeah, I really don't know what his problem is. He's mocking us.

That hike looked really beautiful! Too bad Mama didn't feel comfortable coming.

Fantastic! I'd call it a must-do in Zion.

Ugh, can't believe the facilities were closed!

When you're driving 250 miles through the middle of nowhere, it's nice to have a place you can stop. That wasn't helpful.

Holy Blowout Batman! How is he smiling with that!?!?!?!?!

Well, I imagine it was a great stress relief!

Drew looks like he's laughing at you in the breakfast picture like ha ha kept you up all night again! :thumbsup2

Such a little punk!

All I can say is WOW! I am sure the pictures do not do the trip justice, but they are amazing!

It was an incredible spot! I really loved the view there.

I wish I could say I miss the days of brown tshirts but hmmm :scared: not so much!

I didn't miss them either! We had thought we were done...

I'm sorry, but I am sitting here :lmao::lmao:. Drew is up half the night and then you get that shot of hi at the breakfast table with the happiest look on his face as if he had the best night sleep and just had his belly full.

Har-de-har-har-har. Laugh it up, fuzzball.

Ok, maybe it is a little funny.

Beautiful, beautiful pictures once again friend.

Thanks Kathy!

That hike does sound really fun! But I totally understand Julie's hesitation and don't blame her for skipping it. Glad you all had a good time and found someone to actually frame pictures of your family AND the amazing view.

It all worked out for the best! Such a gorgeous spot.

Ugh, the Grand Canyon North Rim! :sad2: That has to be what I attempted to go to many years ago. All I can remember now is driving down a very long and winding road (probably about 42 miles worth...), then finding the road/parking at the end closed. Couldn't see a thing. Funny - you encountered a closed sign at your intended stop right afterwards, while I was still thinking about this.

Oh, man! We were frustrated enough to be so close and not go see it from that side. I can't imagine experiencing that whole drive just to find it closed!:faint:

Glad your travels were going smoothly. Except for that darn blowout thing Drew pulled. :rotfl: Guess that explains why he looked so happy earlier - he had PLANS. Or maybe he was expressing his displeasure at being left out of the hike. Thank goodness he didn't go with and do that on the hike, I guess. :confused3

I think he was happy to get it all out of his system. Maybe that was why he asked for a newspaper earlier in the ride. :confused3

I'm sorry but I laughed outloud at Drew sitting at the breakfast table grinning from ear to ear despite the fact that he was up kept you up half the night.

We get this a lot: "Is he always this happy? So cute! Always smiling!" We like to repeat that at 3 a.m. :faint:

I don't blame Julie one bit for being too nervous to take Drew on the hike. I'm sure she would have been nervous the entire time. Anytime that we've been someplace that involves hiking and heights, I have to leave John in charge of the kids. I can barely keep charge of myself. :rolleyes1

Yeah, I figured that once I read your chapter about the Pizza Planet stairs. So you might not have enjoyed this quite as much as we did.

The view from the overlook at the end of the trail is absolutely gorgeous! Your pictures look fantastic so I can only imagine what it looked like "in real life".

Just amazing!

Oops, the facilities are closed? Oops, look at the color of the bottom of Drew's shirt! And, yet, he still smiles!

How do you spell relief?

I keep forgetting to ask this , but as part if your fatherly duties are you teaching the kids to play the punch buggy game or slug bug as they call it in the south?

Absolutely amazing views from the Canyon Overlook.

Oh man! How I don't miss those blowouts :rotfl: Well he looks happy to have gotten that out of his system!

Your pics have convinced me that I need to take a trip out west at some point in my life. Drew's pic does not have me convinced that he was up all night ;-) How can he be so happy with so little sleep? I used to tell my kids that they were lucky they were so cute because it sure did help make up for those sleepless nights!

Yah, that picture of everyone at breakfast there…
That look on Drew’s face…

Yep, he’s mocking you.

Thanks for confirming that. What a little punk!

I’m about at out of shape as I could be, but I’d like to give that a shot. DW… likely not. And we no longer have young’ens anywhere close to the infant range, but I don’t see her doing more than waving bye and keeping her phone at the ready to dial 911 as I head out on my own.

This hike really isn't too taxing. Like I said, you have to climb through some switchbacks at the start, but after that it's fairly level.

Her turn to take one for the team.
It’s an odd truth, but the word “Parent” is a synonym for both “Selfless” and “Lunacy”

::yes:::thumbsup2

Certainly looks and sounds like it. And…
You even found someone along the way that knows how to properly compose a picture.

It's nice when everything turns out better than you expected!

Heck of a morning there.
Stunning pictures of some incredibly beautiful places as well.
At the risk of tempting fate, I might go so far as to call it auspicious.
But it’s unwise to tempt fate, ya’ know.

Nobody likes a party pooper.

Shocking…

And he gets in an extra hike for the day.
Albeit a fairly shot one I’m sure, but still.

One of these days he'll figure out how to plan his breaks better. Or get surgery to expand his bladder.

Tough choice there, having to bypass the North Rim.
Wise? Probably…
Prudent? Certianly…
But still a tough call.

We learned that these road trips are similar to Disney World in that you just can't possibly do everything. So you have to make plans to come back. The North Rim is a much different experience than the South Rim. I'd love to get a cabin there someday and spend a night.

That’s a particularly mesmerizing image you got there.
Ya’ know… that’d make a good cover picture for someone’s Facebook page.

 I like the way you think!

Am I not allowed even a moment of celebration? Wait, I'm a Philly fan. Never mind, dumb question.

Aaaaaaaaand, there it is.

:sad2:

Take a lesson from Dave…
You’re in the middle of the great wide empty (beautiful, yes, but empty).
You can stop pretty much anywhere.

I was just hoping for a place with facilities, given the experience we'd had to this point.

And yet, no images of said engineering feat made an appearance within the confines of this epic narrative...

Strange.

Saved for the next chapter.

There you go again…

Remember, “Fate” does not deal kindly with those who disregard her presence.

I guess I'm just slow.

Right on queue.
A full blown containment breach

The sleep deprivation was bad enough!

::yes:: That would be a suitable choice of interjection at this juncture.

It happens.

It could be worse…
Were your name “Clark”, this is the spot in the story where you’d have inadvertently launched the Family Truckster off the edge of a ravine.

True. We were in that general vicinity.

So much for being caught up. Seems like you are following in Kathy's footsteps. :badpc:

Don't worry, I can't do 5 updates at once like some people around here. :rolleyes1

Only up 2 times? :thumbsup2

Um...yay?:confused3

Maybe she was nervous you would do the baby 'dangling over the edge of the cliff' trick. :scared1:

Who do you think I am, Michael Jackson?

Great pictures from the hike!

Beautiful views! I'm sure the pictures don't do it much justice.

:thanks:

Heeeelllllllooooooooo, down there!

:wave2:

Really? Again? Should of given Dave one of those water bottles instead of giving it to Drew.

Seriously. I'm worried about this kid.

Thats a sweet shot. Postcard material.

Thanks! I have to give Julie the credit, though.

Sure is a lot of that going around!

Drew is a keeper... Beautiful smile and seems like a happy baby overall, you are very lucky.

Why, thank you. He's very happy when he's not screaming his head off at 3 a.m.

But he does seem to be mocking you with that smile, like yes I kept you up, I will nap in the car as drive and then, you get to clean me up later!

And then he'll expect us to forgive him just because he's cute.

Sorry the lunch spot was closed but you did have a work around.

At least you don't need a fancy spot to eat PB&J.

You have some beautiful pictures, can't wait to see it in person.

You'll love it!

Great pictures along the route. Sorry your lunch spot was closed. Eeewwww on Drew! :rotfl2:

Win some, lose some, I guess.

Interesting route choice. What made you choose 89A over 89? I got the idea that 89A covered more mountainous terrain than 89. Perhaps I was mistaken. I would have gladly skipped the part of 89 that we took. Thats one of the places we hit snow and where we saw the fatal accident.

A couple of things: one, I was keeping open the option of heading to the North Rim, just in case we got really crazy and decided to go for it. And two, I knew the drive past the Vermillion Cliffs was really scenic as well as the bridge over the Colorado (as you'll see in the next update).

I keep forgetting to ask this , but as part if your fatherly duties are you teaching the kids to play the punch buggy game or slug bug as they call it in the south?

My kids are fully punch-buggy compliant.:thumbsup2

we also played license plate bingo:thumbsup2

We did also look for license plates! I think we found 49 out of 50 states on this trip. I'll leave it to you guys to guess the one we missed. National Park parking lots are a gold mine for finding out-of-state plates.

Absolutely amazing views from the Canyon Overlook.

I loved it there!

Oh man! How I don't miss those blowouts :rotfl: Well he looks happy to have gotten that out of his system!

So at least one of us was happy...:headache:

Your pics have convinced me that I need to take a trip out west at some point in my life. Drew's pic does not have me convinced that he was up all night ;-) How can he be so happy with so little sleep? I used to tell my kids that they were lucky they were so cute because it sure did help make up for those sleepless nights!

I honestly don't know how he does it. I have to chug coffee every morning just to get to work.
