I have received yet another email from a friend who is afraid President Bush is going to reinstate the draft and send her (and my) children to war. There is no support or connection between this bill (S-89) and the present administration, but the email campaign continues. I saw Charlie Rangel (D-California) on one of the morning news programs, and after being pressed, he admitted that he and Fritz Hollings of SC authored and sponsored the draft bill as a protest against the current administration's policies in Iraq (say what?). The introduction of this bill was by two Democrats, but I have not seen one email that identifies it as such. I have already emailed Hollings that I think it's an insult to the voters that he has so little faith in our ability to decide (whether the vote is for Kerry or for Bush) and that he owes his constituents (including me) a full public disclosure of his involvement and intentions. Check out the links to the web pages below; each politician says he would not vote for his own bill.
Everyone should vote his or her conscience, but for the future of this country, inform yourself and don't take any politician's word or the rumors spread by ANY political party at face value. I'm tired of politics!!!!!!!!!!
