The Do and Don't of Room Service

For Gold & Platinum Castaway Club members, there's a reception, usually with several officers (including the Captain) and at least one character for photo ops. They usually serve finger food appetizer stuff, and often will show a video showing where DCL is headed in the future (yeah, it's commercial). Then at the end, as you exit, you get rice krispy mickey heads.

Wow, that's a nice perk!

I ordered room service 2-3x a day on my recent Disney cruise. I tried the cheese plate, buffalo wings (mine were drenched in bottled buffalo sauce and pretty spicy for my preference), chicken tenders and fries (the tenders were real chicken, while the ones I got on deck were the faux pressed chicken BLECH), bagel/muffin, hot tea, and iced tea! Iced tea was "free" and not half bad. I always wanted something to drink at night so I ordered tea every night.

Early morning, late afternoon before the show, and late night were the times I ordered so I never had a real meal - just snacky foods :) I thought they were all decent quality and served quickly.

I've never had that experience. The chicken tenders were definitely not pressed chicken.

I got them at Pete's Broiler Bites - they were like giant McDonald's chicken nuggets. Hopefully it was just a random occurrence! The room service were always real chicken so I just ordered them there instead and didn't try again on deck.

Another thought - for those on the European cruises. There are no Mickey bars. While in Europe the ice cream bars (typical vanilla/chocolate covered) are supplied from vendors there. When we did our Med/WBTA B2B there were no Mickey Bars until we got to Castaway Cay (second to last day).

They had CMs walking all over the place with insulated carriers handing them out.

I'm glad to know this before our cruise! The kids will be disappointed! So they still have ice cream bars you can order? Just not Mickey shaped?

Every morning we order coffee and danish. We enjoying our morning coffee on the verandah before breakfast. It's always delivered promptly.

This is one of the things I'm really looking forward to! I love having a quiet moment to drink a cup of coffee and have a little snack before the day begins, and doing that on a verandah will just make it even better.

We do not have a verandah this time. We thought that since we were only having a three nights cruise and we were doing this trip to make our family discover DCL, a verandah wasn't the best investment.

But I will miss those mornings on the verandah just gazing to the ocean.

We love to order the BLTs! I don't think there is anything special about them, but we think about them often. :) We ask for french fries instead of chips.

I did get the cake of the day once and it was a teeny tiny little cupcake! It was really good, but so small.

Yea to a post cancer trip. I wonder if during surgery one grinds their teeth, making it normal to have cracked teeth. I am glad it was not painful.
Yep! That's what my oncologist told me, it's due to the grinding & tension on teeth through the anesthesia. And the longer the surgery the more likely it is to happen.

I read in an unofficial guide that you can get rice crispy mickey's through room service even though they aren't on the menu. Can anyone verify this? Or refute?
Yes, absolutely. We added 2 to our room service order every night (tipped well) & used them as treat gifts for nieces & nephews souvenirs when we got home.

That is not always the case. On our first med cruise in 2011 they had run out of Mickey bars by august but on both our others (2014 and 15) there have been Mickey bars available and I've seen other trip reports were guests have successfully ordered. I think as Europe has become a regular destination they have been better at stocking up! I'm hoping for them in May this year!!

Thank you! It sounded like they just didn't offer them in Europe. I'll warn the kids they may be out of them by then, but they may be pleasantly surprised. Maybe we'll find out the first night if the servers offer them up as an option in the MDR for dessert.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! Great to know about the free iced tea.

I ordered a Mickey Bar last month on the Dream and was told 30 minutes, so I plopped on the sofa and turned on a movie. 5-10 Minutes later, knock at the door; 2 Mickey bars nice and frozen. Excellent service

As long as you aren't ordering during a busy time of day (normal meal times or all aboard for port days), it will usually only take 10 minutes or so. They may tell you 30 minutes to an hour but it's normally much quicker.

Without admittedly not reading all post in this thread.

The most misunderstood aspect regarding room service is you can tip with a room service receipt.

You just have to ask for one.

Sometimes they have one, sometimes not.

But if you ask for one so you can tip, you will receive one.

What I say when I call Room Service is, if you want a tip, bring a receipt.
Then they bring a receipt, and you can tip on the receipt.

Of course this is helpful if you have no/low cash.

Many pax prefer to have all charges on the house bill for airline CC mileage accrual.

If they deliver without a receipt, and you say you asked for one, to deliver a tip, trust me, they will return to cabin with a receipt expeditiously.

JME

And yes, I know if tip in cash, delivery CM gets the $.
If tipped on a receipt it is shared with another. OH my ! ! ! . Imagine that.
Whatever. I tip very well on receipt. so ... I will let then work it out.
I spend more time with the phone agent than the delivery person fwiw.

May everyone have expeditious room service aboard all vessels.

And tip what makes you comfortable.

This is interesting to me about the receipt and tipping...We took our first cruise last month (4-day on the Dream) and being the loyal "DISer" that I am I came prepared with cash for tipping room service. I never saw a single receipt during the multiple times we ordered room service. We tipped with cash each time. However, on our stateroom statement at the end of the trip I noticed that an extra $5 room service gratuity was added to my account. This clearly was done in error or fraudulently (I hope not) as we always tipped cash. It was only $5 and I noticed as we were on our way off the ship so I didn't try to remedy it. Has this happened to anyone else? Just curious how this would occur?

To the OP-

We ordered-

All Hands on Deck (Yum! But would agree about more crackers being beneficial!:))
Wings-we didn't love these
Pizza-also just okay-not as good as the pizza on Deck 11
and also ordered the "a la carte" breakfast two mornings-super convenient. Everything arrived at the very beginning of the time requested and it was all still hot/warm and just what we needed to get our day started. My kids aren't big breakfast eaters so dry cereal and fruit does just the trick for them!
