I really have no clue, but it wouldn't surprise me if htey were. There are alot of people doing service for you. Severla times at our meals at buffets we had others bringing us drinks and bussing our tables. We actually rarely saw the actual waiter/tress.

My last question about tipping was yanked, so I'll try it another way: Does anyone know if tips are shared among Disney restaurant workers, ie: buss people, hosts, ect?

I would hazzard a guess that the answer is yes.
I have work in the restaurant industry for a very long time and I have never worked in a location where the server was not responsible for tipping out someone.
At the moment where I work servers tip out the house 2% of there daily sales.(So for every $1000.00 of sales a server owes the house $20. At the end of the week all the money in the house account is divided among the bussers, host(ess),bartenders and kitchen staff based on the number of hours divided by the amount of money. So if there is $500 in the account that week and between all the kitchen,bussers.....they have worked 500 hours there is an extra $1 per hour worked given to those workers.
I have worked in many other locations and have had to tip out the house as much as 4%.(Didn't stay there long!!!!!!)
As much as I would love to believe that the Servers WDW get to pocket all there tips I truly cannot see this being the case.:sad2:

When I worked as a waitress I always had to tip out to the bartender and to the bus person. If I had an assistant, then I tipped out to them too. I know some places also make you tip out to the host/hostess. I would think that Disney is the same, but don't know for sure.

any restaurant that has bartenders or busboys, the server is "tipping them put". usually 1 percent of sales, each. if this is not the case, it is an exception to the rule. even if you only order soft drinks, the server gets them from the bartender.

Most disney servers never mind if you leave cash or charge a tip. They get cash at the end of the night for everything that was charged. As far as them keeping the whole tip they have to "tip out " also, 3% of their total sales to the food runners and 2% to the bar tender, so when people sometimes forget to tip them the lose money because they still have to tip out on the sales from that table. I thought I posted this yesterday but it must have been deleted. Did I say someting wrong on does someone know why it was deleted?

You did. I noticed alot of posts have been deleted that were just basic. Not sure why.

Hi all! please excuse me for the redundant post here, but I'm a little confused. we are travelling as a group in June (8 of us), and eating together...so if I read this correctly our tip is automatic (regardless of how we sit) and they add the 18% in for us. Question: is that just taken off of each parties World Card? Like the DDP credits are? In other words, there are 3 "groups" making up the 8 people- mine, and two others..each of us would have them put 18% on our separate tabs?

Thanks for your info!:goodvibes

If you are eating together, yes you ask for sepreate checks. You cna pay cash or have them take it off your KTTW card if you have charging privledges on it. If you are only eating with less than 3, the 18% won't be added automatically, but it is still the suggested minimum.

Thank You! That's what I thought, I leave 18% at least anyway, I just wasn't sure on the procedure with the group thing! :thumbsup2

Yes

Most restaurants at Disney have a 4%-6% mandatory tip out based on sales.

For example, if your family were to come and eat and the check is $200, then the server automatically tips out $8 to $12 regardless if you left a tip or not.

The money is automatically taken out of the servers "cash out" at the end of the night so there is no discrepancy on what, or what not was owed. All tip share is usually shared within the hosts, bussers, and bartenders that work that day.

Usually servers only tip based on what they made not on what their sales were. I don't work for disney so I don't know their policy but I served all through college and it was this way at every restaurant I worked at. Also on a side note generally the bartenders do not get soda, coffee, or tea so they do not share tips in this case.

My response was deleted as well so I am not sure:confused3 I do not think I said anything wrong.
My reply was ....good to know!!

How would they know how much you made???
Everywhere I have served over the last several years "tip out" has always been based on your sales.:)
Which is why if a table "forgets" to tip you it is costing the server money to do the job.

Thats exactly how its done at Disney as well. Its all based off of total sales and has nothing to do with how much you make.

If this is indeed the case and a server has to pay out based on what total sales are, how come I've never heard this before? Obviously, I've never worked at a restaurant. Why doesn't Disney (or all restaurants for that matter) let people know about this business practise? Would restaurants be worried that the public would have a negative opinion of this situation?

It is not common kowledge. I never knew about it until I started working in the industry either. Why do you think this information should be public knowledge? It is part of your employment conditions. Does everyone know about all the rules you have at your job? Are they public knowledge?
I am not sure why you feel that should have Known this. Would this have made a difference in the tip you left??? Probably not.

Maybe not or just maybe it would as I have always wondered why the expected percent is set so high. I had no idea how it all worked and this conversation has certainly been an eye opener for me.

every restaurant I ever worked at, the server gets the soft drinks form the bartender. (ok, not the coffee.)

it depends on the restaurant. for a while, (at the rest. I work) the policy was to "tip out" based on your tips. well, since many people tip cash, it was too easy for servers to "pocket" that, and say.. "gee, I didn't make much tonight,
I can only give you X amount". and the poor bartender or busboys were making little. I would give them a fair amount, but other servers were giving these poor teenage boys (busboys) a buck or two! so they changed it to a certain percentage of the sales, and made it mandatory.. no more "honor system".
this way, if you get exceptional tips, (for your exceptional service) you don't HAVE to share that. (however, if my tables are cleaned promptly, allowing me to "turn" tables quickly, I WILL reward ny busboys. but that's just me.)

since this is an INFO thread... the correct info is: your server will most likely be tipping out a percentage of her sales, whether you leave her a tip or not.
just INFO.

you never heard of this because you've never worked at a restaurant.
there is no negative opinion, because it is fair to the busboys and bartenders.
but, for all those who do not work in the industry, here is information:

most bartenders in restaurants have few customers actually sitting at the bar for "the evening". the bartender spends most of his work shift making drinks for the servers. the faster they get the drinks out for the servers, the happier the customers at the tables are with the server. It makes sense that they should get a share of that tip.

the busboy makes a certain wage. (not much). if a party of eight arrives, but the tables in my station aren't cleaned, but they are in another station, they will seat that party in that other station. this is why I take care of my busboys. they work hard for me, cleaning up the mess, and then my tables in my station are clean and can be sat, and I can turn tables.!

the information is: it takes many people to get your drinks and food to you. in a restaurant, we are a TEAM. and the tip is shared accordingly. and it is almost always based on the sales. the restaurant is assuming the server made X amount of tips, and the "tip out" amount is based on that.

this is just basic INFO, for those who didn't know this. also, the restautant declares the same X amount , based on sales, to the IRS, that the server pays taxes on .

tips, at Disney, is never mandatory.(unless you are a table of 6 or more). and even then, if you are unhappy with the service, you can speak to a manager. I am just giving you information about how the servers tips are divided at the end of the night.
