This thread will be about The Disney Studio.

We are trying to get as much info about rides/attractions so that we can make a helpful guidebook about the Studio attractions.:thumbsup2

These are the questions we are hoping to be able to answer. It's a long list and if each person can add a few pieces, we will have a lot more information than we have now - so don't feel like you have to answer every question by yourself;)
Please post whatever information about the Studios you can add on this thread.
Please only post park information here. If you want to discuss the idea of making a guidebook, Click here to get to the MASTER INDEX THREAD that gives information about the idea.http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=21012175#post21012175

On another thread, people had the good idea of copying the questions and responding to them.
I have one request though. To make it easier to go thru and compile information, I would like people to delete any of the questions not being answered or those that you would answer "I don't know".

That will make it much easier to pull the information out later.

Thanks.

How much wheelchair/ECV seating is there?

I am not sure. My boys were the only ones in wheelchairs during the performance.

Are there individual seats or bench seats? Padded or not padded?

It is an open floor. Guests sit on the floor. During the show, kids will be standing up and dancing. However, there are at least 3 padded benches in the back of the theater if you can't sit on the ground.

Did you sit in the front or the rear of the theatre?

My boys need to stay in their chairs. The CM took us to the right side of the theater in the front. It wasn't the best view, but they could see.

Where does the rest of your party sit?

We sat on the floor next to the boys.

Any other information?

We waited in the regular queue ( outdoors) part of the time. However, a CM took us out of the queue and moved us in front of the doors on the right side. We waited there until the theater emptied out. She then took us in to our spot.
My boys loved the show and were very vocal!

Disney-MGM Studios Backlot Tour

Approach to the Ride
  1. Is the approach to the building/attraction uphill? There is a ramp as part of the queue. Pavement outside the attraction is flat
  2. Is there a handicapped entrance in a different location? Wheelchair/ECV users should use the right hand lane of the ramp
  3. Do you need to go to a special area/use an elevator to access the ride entrance? Use the right hand lane of the ramp
  4. Where is wheelchair/ECV/stroller parking for those who choose to walk through the line? If you're facing the entrance to the attraction, there is stroller/wheelchair parking to the right of the entrance
  5. Is it possible to view a ride vehicle before getting into the queue? There is a model of the tour shuttle "crashed" through the front wall at the entrance to the attraction
  6. Any other information? The tour takes 35-40 minutes to complete. There is a restroom available halfway through the tour. First half of the tour is standing to see a show, second half is seated on a tour shuttle

The Queue
  1. Did you use the regular entrance, Fastpass or Exit to get to the ride? Regular entrance, no FP available
  2. Is the queue indoors or outdoors? Shaded or not? Technically, outdoors, but part of the queue has walls and a good roof, so it can be used as a weather shelter. Part of the queue is completely exposed though
  3. Did you have any problems with navigating the queue? What type of problem? At the top of the ramp, there is a potentially tight turn, although it seems to be manageable for most folks. The incline seems to be a bit steep, but not as steep as monorail stations.
  4. How wide is the queue (approximation)? Left-most 3 lanes are approximately 2 1/2 feet wide, right hand lane is approximately 4 1/2 feet wide
  5. Are there sharp turns/U-turns in the queue? Yes, there is a sharp turn at the top of the ramp
  6. Are there turnstiles anywhere in the queue? No
  7. Is the queue uphill or downhill? Flat then uphill
  8. Is it indoors (very smooth surface) or is the surface rough? Smooth concrete
  9. About how long is the queue (distance, not wait time)? Depending on if there are any 'extension' ropes open, length is between 50 to 150 feet.
  10. Is the queue area noisy? It is a contained area, so if there's a lot of people in there, the volume level will increase. Also, there is a video shown that is loud enough to hear clearly, but not TOO loud
  11. Is the queue dark or bright? The ramp portion of the queue is dark, the outdoor portions are usually quite a bit brighter
  12. Does the queue wind around so that your area of the queue is close to other parts of the queue? If the extension ropes are up, yes. If not, the 4 lanes on the ramp are all next to each other
  13. Anything else about the queue that you want to mention? (Scary, Claustrophobic, etc). There are fans in the shaded portion of the queue, but even so, it could get warm in there

The Preshow:

Note: Many people consider the Water Tank show to be the pre-show for the Backlot Tour. This is incorrect. The Water Tank show is the first half of a 2-part tour.

  1. Is there any preshow or is it just a waiting area? Short pre-show video shown while on the ramp portion of the queue
  2. Where is the preshow located? (on TVs overhead? in front of you?) TVs are located overhead
  3. Is the preshow captioned or otherwise accessible for people with hearing disabilities? Yes, it's captioned
  4. Is it accessible to people using wheelchair/scooters, or do you bypass it? Fully accessible
  5. Where are wheelchairs/ECVs parked during the preshow and can you see from there? They are on the ramp, yes, you can see the video
  6. Is there any seating in the preshow area? if so, what is it like? no seating
  7. How long is the pre-show? Video lasts approx. 4 minutes
  8. How crowded is the preshow area (such as, do they keep telling people to go all the way to the front?) Cast members will usually try to fill empty space, but not to the point of an uncomfortable amount of packing
  9. Is the preshow and/or boarding area dark, bright? noisy? any other information to share? The water tank show is sheltered, but those sitting/standing in the front row may get splashed. The Water Tank show itself is not captioned. Following the water tank show, you travel down a ramp and through the Prop Warehouse to get to the Shuttle loading area.

The Ride Vehicle and Boarding:
  1. Can you see the boarding area before actually getting on (to help with planning)? Yes
  2. How many people can sit per row/ride vehicle? 4-5 people per row, 39 rows per vehicle (5 cars have 7 rows each, the front car has 4 rows)
  3. Did you have to sit with any people not in your party? For small parties (1 or 2), they may seat you with another similarly sized party
  4. Did you use the regular boarding area or another boarding area? Everyone boards from the same load dock, however, wheelchairs/ECVs are typically directed to the right as they exit the Prop Warehouse, putting them towards the front of the vehicle
  5. Is there a moving walkway? About how wide is it? No moving walkway
  6. How do you get into the vehicle? (Examples would be stepping down into a boat like POTC; step up into a ride vehicle such as Mission:Space; or across to a seat/bench? 2-3 steps upwards to board the vehicle. Guests not wishing to transfer may remain in their WC/ECV
  7. How stable is the ride vehicle while boarding? Are there any bars or supports or parts of the ride car you could grab when transferring? Vehicle is stationary and very stable. There are grab bars available
  8. How much back/head/neck support is there? Is there any trunk support? Vehicle seats are hard plastic, with a back. Seat backs are generally not high enough to offer head/neck support
  9. Can you reach other members of your party while riding? (hold hands, support, etc) Yes. They will be seated next to you
  10. Does the ride have an restraint? What type? Does it touch you? Do you have to fasten and unfasten the restraint yourself? Gravity, mostly. There are doors on both sides of the vehicle
  11. Is it possible for someone to help you get in and out of the vehicle? Any transfer requires going up 2-3 steps, but it is possible for someone to get on first and offer a hand to help pull upwards, if necessary
  12. If you had a wheelchair or ECV where was it during the transfer? It can be as close to the vehicle as you feel is necessary
  13. What side do you enter the vehicle from? Do you exit from this same side? Enter and exit from the right hand side of the vehicle
  14. Where was your wheelchair, ECV, cane, etc while you were on the ride? Was it brought back to you at the exit? Canes are allowed on the vehicle. Wheelchairs and ECVs will be moved to the exit point
  15. Did you use a wheelchair accessible ride vehicle? How do you enter this vehicle? How well did your wheelchair fit? All vehicles can accomodate a wheelchair. There is a ramp. Each vehicle can accomodate a max of 3 wheelchairs or 2 ECvs at a time. Manual wheelchairs are restrained with a strap system, power chairs and ECVs are (due to the battery weight) heavy enough as to not make the straps necessary.

The Exit:
  1. What do you exit into? through a store? into another building? outside? If outside, is it shaded or directly into the sun? Off the vehicle, through the American Film Institute Showcase, then into the AFI Showcase Shop. Showcase and Shop are indoors
  2. Where was the exit compared to where you enter? Compared to the stroller parking? The exit of the gift-shop is about 250 feet from the entrance to the attraction. The showcase and gift shop are probably about 200 feet additional travel distance
  3. Is the exit uphill, downhill or flat? Flat

Also of note, the entire tour (Water Tank show and tour shuttle) are offered as part of the weekly sign language interpreted offerings. As of the time I'm writing this, it's Wednesdays and Sundays at 1:30, but be sure to check with Guest Relations as the times/days are subject to change

The above poster did an excellent job describing. I just had a couple things to add.

Actually, each car holds two wheelchairs. Even when I was young and we had a medical stroller (Danielle), pediatric electric wheelchair (me), and standard electric wheelchair (mom)-only the medical stroller and pediatric wheelchair would fit. The wheelchair accessible portion is also helpful for those with trouble transferring. There are three seats (one folds down). On our last trip, Danielle and I rode in our wheelchairs, Dad helped Mom walk up the ramp and she transferred, Grandma transferred. It was the only ride we all rode together.

Additional information: This ride closes early (4:30 or 5:30

A backlot tour vehicle can accomodate 3 standard manual wheelchairs. The close time will be determined by the time of the sun set, thus, later in the summer, earlier in the winter.

I'm assuming this is accessible for wheelchair and scooters. I haven't done this attraction yet; so, I can't help with details. Please, will someone explain how this show works. TIA

I'm assuming this is accessible for wheelchair and scooters. I haven't done this attraction yet; so, I can't help with details. Please, will someone explain how this show works. TIA
Yes, it is.
We have done it with a manual wheelchair, but it is accessible to manual wheelchair, power wheelchair or ECV. I have pictures, but I'm not home, so can't post them right now. The CM at the entrance will route you toward the correct area so that you can enter the theater at the correct place. The wheelchair /ECV seating is in the front row and you will have space for at least one of your party to sit by the person using the wheelchair /ecv. The rest of your party will sit close by.
The audience gets to vote for their choice of singers. For the other seats, the voting controller is on the seat. For those with wheelchairs / ECVs, the controller is portable so you can use it in the position it is most comforable for you.

I figured it was ok for handicap, but it's good to know some details. I'll be having 2 scooters and a wheelchair in my group.

I'll try this one:

Star Tours - MGM

Disney Ride Questionnaire

Information about you (or the person you assisted)

I have auto-immune arthritis, moderate to severe, with permanent joint damage in SI joint, R hand wrist and elbow, both feet, L knee. Controlled with a systemic biologic drug which has side effects similar to chemo (sun sensitivity, hair thinning, nausea, etc). I'm also diabetic. I travel with my husband (we're both mid-40s) and two girls, 14 and 11. We have annual passes and are there several times a month. Disney is my happy place, LOL!

What type of needs for accomodation did you have?

I'm easily fatigued, sun sensitive, can't do stairs, stand for long periods, and have limited mobility.

Were you using any assistive device, such as a manual wheelchair, power wheelchair, ECV, walker, special needs stroller, etc?

Yes, I use a very small ECV most of the time, but also have a manual wheelchair which I use if a park is EXTREMELY crowded, usually MK with its smaller footprint. My best advice is to get a bicycle flag and attach to your ECV so people walking can see something at their eye level that tells them you are down there.

If so, how large (approximate) is your device?

Very small. Golden Buzzaround Lite, 3 wheels and a very small chair.

Approach to the Ride

Is the approach to the building/attraction uphill? Yes, from the time you leave the main sidewalk till you get to the load area its an uphill grade.

Is there a handicapped entrance in a different location? Not exactly. You go on the left hand side of the queue till you get to a handicap ramp which takes you to a different load area.

Do you need to go to a special area/use an elevator to access the ride entrance? Yes. You will be separated from your party and taken to the exit side of the ride where you will wait and enter from the exit. Your party will go in the front row and save you the end seat. This is not as complex as I'm making it sound - the CMs are excellent!

Where is wheelchair/ECV/stroller parking for those who choose to walk through the line? It is down on the main sidewalk. They encourage people to leave their own WC's/ECV's in the hut at the bottom and then use their wheelchairs to get to the ride.... but don't enforce it very well. At SWW, we were told not to even go down there, and were just shown to the left hand queue.

Is it possible to view a ride vehicle before getting into the queue? I don't think so - I've never seen one.

Any other information? Whether you use their WC or your own, they still take you to the same exit side, and you still go in the exit. They do have benches and plug in's there, if needed.

The Queue
Did you use the regular entrance, Fastpass or Exit to get to the ride? Regular entrance then branch off to a special handicap entrance.

Is the queue indoors or outdoors? Shaded or not? Totally indoors, unless there's an over 90 minute wait (I've never seen this, not even on SWW).
Did you have any problems with navigating the queue? What type of problem? Never had a problem, but larger ECVs might.

How wide is the queue (approximation)? 3 1/2 to 4 feet?

Are there sharp turns/U-turns in the queue? Fairly sharp. I do fine in my 3 wheeler, but those with the big 4 wheelers might have a problem.

Are there turnstiles anywhere in the queue? Not that I remember - you can tell where they used to be, but I don't think they are there anymore.

Is the queue uphill or downhill? Uphill

Is it indoors (very smooth surface) or is the surface rough? Indoors and smooth surfaced.

About how long is the queue (distance, not wait time)? About 125 yards (according to my DH, who thinks in terms of football fields!)

Is the queue area noisy? The main one is, but the handicapped isn't.

Is the queue dark or bright? Slightly dark, but not so dark you can't clearly see your way. Maybe like a movie theater when the lights come up. Once you get to the load area its very bright, though.

Does the queue wind around so that your area of the queue is close to other parts of the queue? Yes, until the handicap line, then its very separate.

Anything else about the queue that you want to mention? (Scary, Claustrophobic, etc). The very last turn of the queue is sharp, and there might be another party waiting in front of you.... you might be surprised, LOL!

The Preshow:
Is there any preshow or is it just a waiting area? The preshow is there, for the rest of your party. If you need to load at the exit, you won't be able to see it, but there are very nice themes back there, too.

Where is the preshow located? (on TVs overhead? in front of you?) I believe its on TV screens over head and on the side of the load area.

Is the preshow captioned or otherwise accessible for people with hearing disabilities? Yes.

Is it accessible to people using wheelchair/scooters, or do you bypass it? Wheelchairs/Scooters bypass it.

Where are wheelchairs/ECVs parked during the preshow and can you see from there? At the exit, no preshow!

Is there any seating in the preshow area? if so, what is it like? No, all standing lines.

How long is the pre-show? 4-5 minutes.

How crowded is the preshow area (such as, do they keep telling people to go all the way to the front?) People are put into lines separated by metal handrails. Many people, but organized.

Is the preshow and/or boarding area dark, bright? noisy? any other information to share? Bright and futuristic, slightly noisy, but more of a bustling atmosphere.

The Ride Vehicle and Boarding:
Can you see the boarding area before actually getting on (to help with planning)? No.

How many people can sit per row/ride vehicle? Maybe 12 per row, and about 6 rows, I think?

Did you have to sit with any people not in your party? No.

Did you use the regular boarding area or another boarding area? Board at exit.

If you board at the exit, were people getting off in your path to get on? No, they wait until the prior group exits before they load you, and your party is coming right in on the other side, saving your end seat.

Is there a moving walkway? About how wide is it? There is a moving walkway at the exit, going to the store. It goes down (IIRC), and is about 4 feet wide.

Did you have a limited time period to board? If so, aproximately how long did you have to get on? Did you feel like it was enough time? You can take all the time you need, and the CMs are very willing to hold doors, wait till you are in your seat, etc. before they start the ride.

How do you get into the vehicle? (Examples would be stepping down into a boat like POTC; step up into a ride vehicle such as Mission:Space; or across to a seat/bench? You go down the exit row, maybe 12 feet, and sit in the end seat, then fasten your seatbelt.

How stable is the ride vehicle while boarding? Are there any bars or supports or parts of the ride car you could grab when transferring?
Is there a particular seat or row that is best to transfer to? Why did you think that row/seat was better (more room, better ability to grab something, etc?) You always take the end seat. It is completely immobile while boarding. As it is the end, you can hold onto the wall, the armrests, or your party while getting seated.

Was there a specific ride vehicle that was made for easier transfers? All are the same.

How much back/head/neck support is there? Is there any trunk support? It is a hard, movie type chair. If support is an issue, I'd think carefully because this ride kind of slings you around.

Can you reach other members of your party while riding? (hold hands, support, etc) Yes.

Does the ride have an restraint? What type? Does it touch you? Do you have to fasten and unfasten the restraint yourself? Lap Seatbelt. I think they have extenders, if needed.

Is it possible for someone to help you get in and out of the vehicle? Yes.

If you had a wheelchair or ECV where was it during the transfer? Parked in the exit hall. I kept the key.

What side do you enter the vehicle from? Do you exit from this same side? You enter from the exit and exit from there as well.

Where was your wheelchair, ECV, cane, etc while you were on the ride? Was it brought back to you at the exit? I had parked it myself and it remained in that place till I exited the ride.

The Exit:
What do you exit into? through a store? into another building? outside? If outside, is it shaded or directly into the sun? You exit down a ramp into the store. That store goes out onto the main drag, thus you go from dark (in the ride) to dim (in the ramp area) to the store, to outside.

Where was the exit compared to where you enter? Compared to the stroller parking? Close to the entrance, maybe 15 yards.

Is the exit uphill, downhill or flat? Ramp from the ride is downhill, exit from store is flat.
