Good morning guys!

Got some good news and bad news.

Good news is, I don't have to go to work today

Bad news is it is because I'm at home with a 20 month old who has strep throat. We'll try to make the best out of it though. Getting some things caught up around the house. When we went to pick up his prescription I happened to wander back to the electronics section and buy some movie about lions on blu ray, so we'll probably give that a watch later.

Andy, I hope the little man gets better :thumbsup2

Unfortunately, I never found the source of the bacon smell. :sad1:
But I'm thinking of bringing in at hot plate to fry up my own to cover the smell of whenever someone burns their popcorn in the microwave 50' from my office. :scared:

Maybe what you smelled was this:

The same thing happened to me on Facebook yesterday. One of my friends posted a column from CNN relating statistics that men 18-34 are spending their time playing video games and working for their local DOT for hours instead of getting college degrees, and being active as fathers and leaders in their community. I made a mild comment agreeing with the intent of the column and nearly got my head taken off. People are amazing these days.

What do you expect, defending the slackers at the DOT? :rotfl2:

Why did you go and do something like that? You have nothing better to do after demolishing me in fantasy this week? :confused3:confused3 :rotfl2::rotfl2:

:sad2:

I'm highly offended at this insinuation. It's impossible for us to spend hours playing video games at our jobs.

Because the websites are blocked. :rotfl2:

You're the one who named your team after Beverly. What did you expect?

Gladiator?
Or were those tigers?

Hope little dude feels better soon. Doesn't he know you can't be sick at harvest time?

=============

Well, it's now fall, which means the sun is crossing the sky a little lower every day. Which means the two south facing windows in my office are getting more and more direct sunlight. The thermometer in here is reading 82.7°. I guess that mean's it's time for some Animal Kingdom background music to complete the ambiance. Now if I only had a Dole Whip to cool off with...

Mark, I replied on the podcast board.

So, after school, DD went to the mall to look at Homecoming dresses and to give moral support to a friend that was applying for a job. No big deal, I would pick her up at the mall and we would have dinner at Fridays.

We are seated and she hands me a package. Aww, thats nice. My daughter bought me something because I am such a great dad. She gives it to me and says, "Happy Birthday." Totally forgot it was my birthday today.

To top it off, the waitress asked me for ID when I ordered a drink. My response was, "Really?" She said yes, really. I handed my DL over and commented that I was probably older than her parents. She took one look at it and said I was right.

The best thing though is DD bought a dress and it was only $20.

I am mentioning it here not just because I thought it was funny but Stopher and I share the same birthday. So if you see this, Happy Birthday Christopher.

I spent the day at Disneyland yesterday with my kids. DW decided not to go with us. Her dad is going down hill FAST. He'll probably be gone within the next week, we're not sure. So I've been playing "distraction" with the kids. We've hit the beach a lot, the park, out to dinner, out to lunch, Disneyland... it's been fun, but very tiring too. I kept meaning to upload some pics to twitter, which then autofeeds to my FB, but I just never did. We did Star Tours 3x, hit all 4 of the mountains (yes, for those who have never been to DL, it's not just a "triple mountain whammy"... but rather a "quad mountain" with the inclusion of the original iron roller coaster - the Matterhorn Bobsleds"). We enjoyed the halloween overlays at Haunted Mansion (Haunted Mansion Holiday) and Space Mountain (Ghost Galaxy), and DD got to meet both Rapunzel & Flynn Rider in their meet & greet location in Fantasyland. We enjoyed lots of fun stuff as the crowd was relatively light. The longest wait we had was 35 minutes. We hopped back and forth between DL and DCA and also enjoyed Toy Story Midway Mania and the Little Mermaid ride, as well as other stuff. Enjoyed World of Color last night. Had ice cream sundaes for dinner... it was great. (My kids were dumbfounded by my doing that :lmao: - it was such fun to see their faces when they realized I was serious!)

Today is a relatively quiet day as I sit here on my FIL's patio overlooking the ocean. It was raining this morning, but the sun has come out and the water is just sparkling. DW and the kids are planning to take me out for dinner to celebrate my birthday.

I hope you all are doing well.

Happy Belated Birthday to both of you!! :cool1::cool1::woohoo::woohoo: Yesterday was a whirlwind of activity... including a blown radiator hose in the DW's car! :lmao:

Is anyone here interested in attending WDWToday Reunion at Walt Disney World (approximately December 8 - 12)?

I just discovered I have a free plane ticket on SWA that I have to use by early January, and I'm thinking I might be able to make Reunion happen, if I can find a roommate.

I will be there then, but my DW and I were not planning on a roommate, sorry.

All right guys, Im open to suggestions here. My youngest daughter, 5, is in a kindergarten/1st grade merger class. We got her mid term report card yesterday, and it looks like my checking account. Alot more minuses than pluses. She doesn't listen in class, doesn't follow directions, doesnt use materials well, and almost always comes home with a frowny face in her binder. We have tried taking away the tv, video games, and computer in the past. I think most of the problems stem from the fact that she is extremely intelligent for her age (she's started reading at 3, and her reading comp now is at a 2nd grade level). She knows all of her letters, numbers, colors, and shapes, and most of those she knows in English and Spanish. The teacher cant give her more work, as we have asked for that already. We told her yesterday that unless she improves, then she will not be allowed to Trick or Treat for Halloween.

Any one have any ideas? :confused3

Matt

So, she is having trouble with behavior while still being able to handle the material. First grade can be tough, even for smart kids, because of the relatively sudden appearance of expectations. With your DD being 5, she's also probably not as able to stay engaged all day as well as her older peers. My 4yo is in kindergarten this year, and I can see how she only has about 6 or 7 good hours of being awake before she starts to get tired and cranky. This usually hits her after the schoolwork for the day is over, but it can also depend on how her sleep was overnight.

Other than just developmental issues (being young to be doing 1st grade work and expending the mental effort to do so), I might look into things that might be frustrating her in class besides the schoolwork being easy for her. If they work off of a board at all, nearsightedness could make it difficult for her to "get" what's up there. That could be frustrating her, resulting in some acting out. Same with an ADHD or ADD issue; kids with those disorders have trouble with their "brakes", and can have trouble focusing on the things that they need to because of everything else to which they're attending.

One other suggestion: Rewards are a much better motivator than punishments, over the long run. Instead of "you lose this if you don't do this" you might be able to couch it as "you get this privilege if you do this" whether "this" could be a positive note from the teacher, or whatever you decide. The timeline for this should give pretty quick reinforcement; you can't really expect it to work if you make the reward contingent on her next report card, because that time frame is just too long.

The alert beacon has not been activated:confused3

Shouldn't that be the alert bacon?

Good morning guys!

Got some good news and bad news.
