We bought a Honda Pilot a few years ago (which seats 8 in a car that is not the size of a bus).. While it's not an American company...here's my long winded experience. Apologize now for the welts you will get when your head hits the keyboard.
We had a Ford Explorer which had been nickle and diming us for quite some time...we spend thousands on new bearings because "they just wear out sometimes", among other things. So we decided it was time for a new car.
Our requirements: 1. it had to seat 8 people so we could take a whole other family with us if we were driving somewhere (we have 4 people, so apparently the only families we can be friends with have to have 4 people too

). 2. We wanted the full package, leather, navigation all that. We had not had a new car in 10 years...it was time to do it right! 3. We didn't want a minivan.
So that narrowed it down to the Chevy Traverse and the Honda Pilot. I did the online research thing...even going through Costco to get their pricing, and then I e-mailed 2-3 of each type of dealer to see who would give me the best price. That narrowed it down to one Honda dealer and one Chevy dealer. Time to go test drive.
The Honda dealer was closer and on the way to the Chevy dealer so we stopped there first. We were greated within 5 minutes by the guy I had been dealing with on the phone and e-mail...and he had a car set up outside for us to test drive. It was a Touring edition of the Pilot...so fully loaded. Holy cow what a ride. Quiet as all getout...comfortable...and the car just felt solid to us. We wanted black, though, and this car was maroon. We left there while instructions for him to find a black one.
We show up at the Chevy dealership...meet the woman I had been e-mailing and talking with within 5 minutes. She escorted us to a waiting area...apparently she isn't actually in sales. She left us to go get a salesperson (by the way, we had an appointment...they knew exactly when we were coming). 25 minutes later a sales guy finally arrives. Not off to a good start.
They had a car pulled up out front...we walk up to it and I almost laugh. Of the two requirements above, the one they decided was the most important to show us in a test drive car was the 8 passenger side. They took us for a test drive in the stripped down lowest end model they had.
I felt like I had asked for a Mercedes and they brought me a Pinto to test drive (no offense to Pinto owners). Very weird. We asked him about it...and, oh they don't have 8 passenger vehicles with all the bells and whistles on their lot. Again, I had been dealing with these folks for two weeks.
Oh well...of we go on the test drive. I hopped in the back and DW was the driver (this was replacing her car, I own a very manly truck. Vrroooom!).
the first things I noticed were the seats. While the Pilot seats were thick luxurious looking leather seats...the driver and passenger seats in this car looked like skinny versions of airline seats. They didn't even *look* comfortable. Now I know why the Traverse has a bit more room in the back!
We start down the highway...different driving experience altogether. It wasn't quiet, not incredibly comfortable. Not uncomfortable, it just didn't feel as solid as the Pilot. the guy was chatting us up and found out that we were also looking at the Pilot and spend the next 10 minutes bagging on how bad the Pilot was. He did not once tell us anything about the Traverse.
Here's my favorite part...our youngest son (6 at the time) was with us on these test drives. About 1/2 of the way through the test drive he leans over, looks him in the eye and says "Connor, so which car do you like better? The Traverse or the Pilot".
Connor very calmly looks back as him and says "The Pilot". I laughed pretty hard. Poor guy. I informed him the age-old addage...don't ask a question you don't know the answer to.
So we get back to the lot and I asked about seeing a car with leather seats, etc...obviously I'm not going to make my decision by driving a pinto. He takes us over to another Traverse which is about to go out on another test drive for someone else...the thing is fully loaded. No, it didn't have the 8 passenger configuration....but it was much nicer than the pinto we drove in.
All-in-all, though, the quality was significantly less for a car that was about $2,000 more. Oh, the other thing...when you close the door on the Pilot you get a nice, satisfying "thunk". When I closed the door on the Traverse I felt like it was a tin can closing on itself...with a sound similar to that.
One last thing...on each car they had to list how much of the car was made in the US. The pilot was 70% made in the USA...I figured the Traverse would be much more...but to my surprise it was 60%. Who knew?
I know, I know, the profits all go to a Japanese car company...so that % really doesn't mean a whole lot...and I'm sure there are some very happy Traverse owners out there...so please don't take offense.
But my cheese balls are eaten in a Pilot. And I recommend it.
