Next time you're in LA (lower alabama), check out:

1. USS Alabama- WW2 Battleship, great history and the kids will love exploring every nook and cranny.

2. Beaches- choose from Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, Fort Morgan or Dauphin Island. Great clean family friendly beaches, good local southern food and seafood . Fun activities for the family including waterparks, gocarts, putt-putt, and offshore fishing.

3. Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines- military fort remains dating back to the early 1800s. Fort Morgan is also the origin of the quote "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead."

4. The University of South Alabama fields Division 1 football, baseball and basketball teams.

5. This is Alabama, so you have to have some BarBQue. Try The Brick Pit, Sonnys, or Dreamland.

6. Outlet malls in Foley, AL on the way to Gulf Shores.

7. Bellingrath Gardens. The family estate of the local CocaCola bottling magnate now boasts beautiful gardens and light displays at Christmastime. Well worth seeing.

8. Bass Pro Shops (for you Fed) across the bay in Spanish Fort, AL. They have most everything a guy could need.

I like this idea. If you're going to be in my neck of the woods (Greater Kansas City area) highlights include:

1. BBQ - The BEST BBQ in the world. Lots of great choices, including Arthur Bryant's, Jack's Stack, Gates & Sons, Rosedale, Oklahoma Joe's - when my brother visits from Chicago for a week, he eats at a different BBQ restaurant every night.

2. KC Royals Baseball - newly renovated stadium and day-of-game tix as cheap as $11 retail. With a bit of lead time, you can get good tix cheap.

3. Worlds of Fun - thrill-ride amusement park (now owned by the folks who own Cedar Point in Ohio).

4. Kansas City Zoo - the new Africa area is quite nice, as is the new polar bear habitat

5. Harry S Truman Presidential Library - a bit of a trek out in Independence, but well-done

6. Powell Gardens - nice botanical gardens, near the Truman library

7. Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead - laid back fun for the little ones. Petting zoo, playgrounds, etc. Out in the Soutwestern 'burbs (near me). Admission is free during the week and only $2/person on weekends.

8. Country Club Plaza - one of the first outdoor shopping mall districts in the United States. Fun shopping, great historical Spanish-influenced architecture, parks to run around in, lots of fountains, good restaurants.

9. T-Bones Northern League Baseball - Independent Minor League baseball. Fun atmospher. The best seats in the house are $16/each. Parking is free. And the only T-Rex restaurant outside of Downtown Walt Disney World is just up the street.

10. Newly-opened Schlitterbahn water park. (I haven't been yet, but it looks pretty cool)

Don't forget Cabelas and the Harley Davidson factory.

ps I love Arthur Bryants! I lived just off the plaza for about 6 months back in 2004. Nice area. Got to slip over to Lawrence for a few games as well...good stuff.

Help...

I'm heading to Vegas on Fri for a conf. Will be there less than 48 hrs and solo, but any suggestions for fun would be appreciated. (besides the obvious gambling/girls/shows). Thanks.

Hey, Pez is ours!

Made right here in Orange, CT. The town we were married in!

I believe our museum was run by a couple of local brothers who had an enormous collection. The only one I have is Tweety, of Seinfeld fame. :lmao:

The 2011 Airshow Season is upon us! Our son told us the Blue Angels' show jets are lined up in show formation for a dress rehearsal today out in El Centro. Friday is "media day" and Saturday will be the first "official" show of the season. Soon after, they will be leaving El Centro for Pensacola and the remaining 34 shows beginning with Keesler AFB in MS. Go Blues! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Good morning Dis Dads. I could not sleep last night and was up at 3:00. I don’t think it is due to our upcoming trip for a couple of days in the World. It was not the “I was too excited to sleep” syndrome. That will come in a couple of days. Easy day today though. Only a couple of errands to run.

Mike, any idea if the Angels will be stopping in Miami? I am pretty sure they will be in the Broward (Ft. Lauderdale) air show but did not see anything for Miami.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Hmmm.. You keep talking about the blue angels.. Is your son affiliated with them? Just curious.

Well, I don't post for a little over a week and miss 65 pages. That's a lot of catching up to do. Been super busy at work and so tired of the evenings that it's everything that I can to just to turn on the computer. So, I guess that I've got my work cut out for me over the next few days catching up.

I will say :welcome: to all the new dads, and I hope that everyone has a great day. Raining here in the mountains of NC; gonna be a yucky one. Maybe the kids will be a little more laid back at school today :lmao:

true, hope the cards go down this year, one of the teams along with the yankees i really dont like.
As a Cardinals fan (I can see Busch Stadium from my office) I take offence to comparison to the Yankees. The Cards aren't trying to buy championships, and the business w/ the Reds was (I hope) isolated to last season. I think this year baseball, not drama, will dominate headlines.:grouphug:

There's a Schlitterbahn in KC?? That's way closer than San Antonio!:woohoo:

I'd never compare anyone to the Yankees... except for the Red Sox.:lmao:

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the drama side of things, but you've got to admit, a good rivalry like that is good for the division. It just makes those games that much more meaningful.

I was there the night of the fight, sitting right behind the Reds dugout... Kind of one of those things that everybody knew was going to happen before the game ever started.

Well, the gambling/girls/shows pretty much sums it up... Other than drinking I'm not sure what else you can add to it.:confused3

Where will you be staying?

If you're a fan of the show Pawn Stars, you could go see the pawn shop. It is just a few blocks away (walking distance) from the old Vegas area. You might want to head to old Vegas at night to and see the light show they have out on the streets.

I'd also recommend the Brazilian steakhouse in the "shopping mall" section of the Planet Hollywood Casino. They have an all you can eat deal for pretty much any kind of meat you can imagine. It is expensive, but if you like to eat meat, you will love it.

The New York, New York Casino has a rollercoaster that runs on top/around it. It looks like a lot of fun, but we never got to ride it when I was there. Apparently they can't operate it when it is windy.:confused3

went through page one to see how many of the qualify rules applied to me...and i found 48 that were dead on, and a few more that were partial truths.:rolleyes1

wondering if you can add one to the list.

made spouse get a job at disney store, so you could get a discount on future trips and pre vacation mechandise!

Welcome back! I've seen you on some of the Trip Reports I've been reading. And I like your addition to the qualifications! I'll have to talk to the missus... :lmao:

Lets call this the "come to my little neck of the woods" game.:thumbsup2

What I would like to see is for Dads to put in a little post about what would be nice for someone to see or do while visiting your area.It can be anything from theme parks,to museums,Sporting events, could be something busy or even just a relxing trip to the beack or woods, could be anything anything!!!
The thing here is to pretend I (or other Dads) is a tourist and you are a travel agent trying to get me to visit your area.Give some ideas of what there would be to do if I (we) came to visit your neighborhood.List places to stay, maybe places to eat etc.
The reason I ask for this is I am looking for a road trip or two to do with the family this year, and would like to do something different.

There's a lot to do in Delaware! You can go to Philly, Baltimore, D.C....

Hmm. I guess I've used that joke one too many times, huh? Ok, actual reasons to visit Delaware:

1. Great beaches! New Jersey has a "shore", we have beaches. And ours are Snooki-free! Rehoboth Beach is the most popular destination, but I prefer the relative quiet of Bethany Beach.

2. Old New Castle/Fort Delaware. New Castle is the town where William Penn first set foot in the New World. Many historic buildings in the area, as well as the church spire which sets the 12-mile radius that is the Mason-Dixon Line. Fort Delaware is on Pea Patch Island out in the Delaware River, and was an old Civil War fort and prison. It's supposedly haunted, too.

3. Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Good place to see wildlife in the coastal marshes.

4. Winterthur mansion: H. S. Dupont's home and gardens, if you're into that sort of thing.

5. Hagley Museum. While the women explore Winterthur, the guys can check out the old DuPont Black Powder mill.

6. Delaware is the home of tax-free shopping!

7. University of Delaware Blue Hens football. One of the top teams in Division I-AA, or the FCS, or whatever it's called now. You can get seats that don't require binoculars to view the games, and in the postseason you can see what an actual college football playoff is like.

8. Punkin Chunkin'! This fall event has become so big even the Mythbusters have covered it for the Discovery Channel. You've got catapults/trebuchets, air cannons, and splattered pumpkins. What more could you want?

9. Dover Downs Raceway and Casino. If that's your thing.

10. The small-town charm of Gumboro, Del.

11. Just kidding about Gumboro.

College football playoff??????? Blasphemy!!! The BCS is a joke

Explosions... but that's a pretty good start.:thumbsup2

9. Dover Downs Raceway and Casino. If that's your thing.
I've stayed in a hotel down the road from there a few times, but never been on the property. That is definitely a place I want to go see a race at though.

Here is beautiful sunny Colorado we have:
1. COORS- yes that right one of the countries largest breweries. Take the tour and get your free samples at the end*

2. EPIC SNOW- Some of the best powder skiing is found in the Rocky Mountians. Colorado is home to over 30 ski resorts.

3. The "MILE HIGH CITY"- come get a head rush from the lack of oxygen provided free of charge. **

4. The DENVER CHOPHOUSE- possibly in the same caliber as Le Cellier***

5. COORS FIELD- Home of YOUR Colorado Rockies and even more famous, the "ROCKY DOG" foot long loaded with Kraut, Grilled Peppers and Grilled Onions. ****
6. ELITCH GARDENS- Home to some of the sweetest coasters this side of Minnesota. *****

*- sample sizes are about the size of a thimble
**-bloody noses and pulmonary embolism will cost extra
***-pure blasphemy
****-may make your spouse leave...if not just till the green cloud disperses
*****-you will puke

Glad to sse alot of dad playing the "come to my neck of the woods game" I will be going back and cutting and pasting all of these posts into one spreadsheet for further use. There have been a couple that have caught my eye and I will be looking into your neck of the woods a little closer!
