Well guys I have a bit of news...

...My FIL has had a couple of setbacks in his cancer treatments/situation. The primary one is that the Tarceva drug he's been on to inhibit / slow the growth has stopped working. And between his last appointment and today's, the tumor on his liver has doubled in size. Needless to say DW and her siblings are beside themselves. The doctors and my FIL have decided to pursue chemo, but way back at the beginning, the doctors basically said the Tarceva had a higher percentage rate of working than chemo. We'll see. His spirits today were crushed. DW hasn't made the call to him yet, as her sister said it wouldn't matter yet...he's been in tears all afternoon and isn't talking to anyone. He goes for his first chemo treatment next week, not sure when - and then after that we'll determine when DW will go back out there. She's thinking later, but at this point we just don't know. As I learn more, I'll share.

Been there, done that with my own father. Really hard to watch. I'm sure it's even tougher when there are several states between you and he. In that regard, I was lucky as my own father was only 2 miles down the road. Thoughts and prayers from us.

Indeed. And thank you.

It was hard when DW went west the first time back in September. Then he was still adjusting to the situation having been diagnosed about 5 weeks prior. This time will be another adjustment period (whenever she gets out there) - but I think it will be harder for them both - especially when time for her to return home again.

Speaking of anthems, did anyone catch the National Anthems that Jim Cornelison did at the Bears' home playoff games? (If not, check it out here:http://blogs.suntimes.com/bears/2011/01/jim_cornelison_to_sign_nationa.html) He does a great rendition, but I wanted to get people's opinion on the crowd response. In case you're not aware, he's an opera singer and full time anthem singer for the Chicago Blackhawks. Rather than stand at quiet attention during the song, the tradition is to stand, whoop, holler, yell and cheer during his anthems. I've read opinions both ways on this - some like it, others think it's disrespectful. What do you guys think?

Sorry to say, I've never heard Jim Cornelison's version; must be similar to Robert Merrill's. Anyway, my vote for any type of cheering during the anthem is "disrespectful". There's no reason the public can't wait until the final word is sung to let loose with whooping and hollering. I for one stand with my hand over my heart until the final word is sung before I do anything. Anything else rubs me the wrong way. I guess it would be like yelling during the Pledge of Allegiance. That's the opinion of a Vietnam era vet.

I agree with you Mike.

Sorry to hear that things have taken a bad turn for him. Cancer is a very frustrating disease to see a loved one go through. I hope that he can get some help from the chemo.

CRUD

Checking in for the first time since Friday... a lot to catch up on. I was in my brother in law's wedding Saturday and we stayed around to help undecorate after the reception making it a late night. We got up Sunday and went to church and I was exhausted... thought it was just from the late night. We went to eat lunch at a local pizza place and I had no appetite... I usally eat half a pizza there. Well, by the time I got home I figured out why I didn't have any appetite... I had the stomach flu. Sunday was a brutal day, needless to say I didn't get to eat good food and drink beer while watching the Super Bowl. In fact, I slept through the 1st and 3rd quarters of the game. I've been off work the past 2 days, but feeling better now. Hopefully I'll get back to work tomorrow. I'm about to go crazy sitting around the house at this point.

Ouch. The crud is going around... and sounds like you came through better than some. Hope you feel 100% soon! :thumbsup2

I started it back in January. I had to drop some of the lower body exercises for a few weeks due to a knee injury from playing basketball (and of course I haven't worked out at all the last few days) but I actually enjoy it. I'm not sure it should start with the chest & back workout... I see how it can be discouraging at first. It does get a little stale hearing the same dialog after the first time or 2 though. I take it that you probably didn't make it to ab ripper X on day one???? I absolutely HATE that one. I'm glad it is only 15 min. I personally feel like that is about 13 min too long. Good luck!

No plyometrics for you! Hope the knee is recovering well. My problem is usually the ankles. Sprained them too many times to count. So far I am liking the program... but I'm only a few days into it. Not able to keep up with them yet, but I had already prepared myself for that. Just did the Ab Ripper X this morning... and I was shocked that the limiting factor in the workout was my quads! Not my abs! Had my DD next to me for that part of it... and she was a hoot :lmao: Nothing like a skinny little girl showing you how it's done! :rotfl2:

Thanks guys! :grouphug: It is tough. It's hard to watch from a distance too. Even harder when your wife really wants to head out there NOW - but can't. Next week we'll know more after his first chemo treatment - and then she'll work it out with her siblings as to when she should go out there. Sigh.

Oh, Christopher! Our prayers are with you and your family. So hard being so far away! Praying for the chemo to work!

I hear you about kids born in February. Or, in our case, January. Last year, DS 9th birthday party got snowed out. This year, we waited until last night to have a party at our local YMCA (multipurpose room, pool usage, very inexpensive). So, we're throwing down some pizza, cake and other goodies in the multipurpose room and at 7:00, we line the boys up to let them hit the pool. I'm getting ready to go out the door to the pool when I look and a Y employee is motioning for me to come into the foyer. When I go out there, he then informs me that someone had just puked in the pool, and that the procedure for cleanup is 12 hours closed and some major chemical treatment. They were very apologetic and offered us basically whatever we wanted. Luckily, DS had received a couple of soccer balls for his birthday, so the boys just stayed in the MP room and just played their brains out for an hour and no one was the worse for wear. To top it off, we're getting a full refund, so all in all, things worked out about as good as they could under the circumstances. Hope that your trip to the Statue of Liberty works out better :lmao:

:scared1::scared1: Yikes! That sounds...well, less than ideal.

Anyway, we had crummy weather for our day trip, but in spite of that we had a blast visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. I need to get the pictures uploaded for sharing online, and once I do that I'll try and get a mini-TR done in case any of you are ever interested in doing the trip. Maybe I'll clear out some cobwebs on the DIS Dads website and put it up there. I'll let you guys know.

Yuck! I hope you're feeling better soon. Not getting to eat junk food for the Super Bowl...that's un-American!
