DIS Dads The DIS Dad's Club V - Man's Room

Dads of the DIS talk about life, bacon, Disney, bacon, kids, bacon, cars, bacon, family life, and lots of other fun stuff! And beer. And bacon.

Well I finaly got a chance to go back through the thread and see what all’s been going on. As usual, life tends to through us a lot of curves along the way. Some good (like going to Disney early), and unfortunately some not good at all.

Chris, Barry,
Please know that we are keeping both of you and your families in mind during these very trying times (btw: I’m not sure that I’ve earned first name status yet, but it seemed appropriate here). It will not be easy, but you will find a way to keep moving forward. Feel free to unload what ever needs to be said here. We’ll always lend a sportive ear. :grouphug: Let me also use a couple of lines to give thanks to all the folks in this nutty world that work for Hospice organizations everywhere. I lost both my mother and Father-in-Law to particularly nasty forms of cancer a while back (so I do understand very clearly all the things y’all are going though right now). We too were very grateful for the help all the hospice workers put forth. It didn’t make anything any easier, but it sure helped make it bearable, and the comfort derived form being in your own home or at least in a calm, quite and safe place is immeasurable.

i think i am going straight down 95..I thought I would have more time to figure all this out since our original reservations were for Nov. but my wife changed it to this weekend:scared1:and now its a mad rush to figure all this out

I'm pretty sure the tolls you hit are in Delaware and Maryland. Delaware hits you up for a few bucks at the MD line, and then Maryland gets you at the Woodrow Wilson bridge crossing into VA both ways and then also in Perryville on the way back. I'd estimate $10-15 for those tolls. After that, I don't think there are any tolls in VA, NC or SC. Haven't done GA or FL in years, so I can't remember if they have any or not.

Where are you staying? We'll be down there next week and would love to see fellow Eagles fans! :thumbsup2
Yeesh! So how many DIS Dads am I going to juuuuuuust miss meeting, because we don't get to Orlando until Oct. 1, and not to WDW until the 2nd/3rd? :confused3

Rob: Thanks. My own family situation, while trying and difficult to deal with right now, is kinda paling in comparison to Barry's right now. BUT, it is nice having a place like this to go through the motions of life, and share those highs and lows.

I certainly can't, nor would want to, speak for Barry - but as for me... no worries at all about the first name! Go ahead, use it. I've had it my whole life, and it's there to be used. While my given name is Christopher, (the iteration I prefer) I've been stopher pretty much since the 5th grade, and I kinda like it too. I've been called Chris (not super high on my list), Christopher, Christophe (too many computers cut off at 10 letters), Mr. L (last name's Lingren), L, CPL, CP (my middle name is Paul) and many other things from an italian explorer to a silly old bear's human pal, to a brand of frozen pizza, and many others that have absolutly nothing to do with my name! It doesn't matter to me - truly... plus it helps with the familiarity aspect, which this group really is about - being friendly and familiar - so by all means, go right ahead. Please. :)

But this picture, which my DW just posted on FB this afternoon, makes me smile. He's thinner than ever before, and sitting in a wheelchair, but he's just happy as a lark right here, so again I say it was entirely worth it to send her out west for a while.

I would say you are most definitely right....

And if there was a way to THIRD something I would.

The manlaw commitee needs to hold an emergency meeting

I see no prohibition against a Third....:thumbsup2

I dont even know yet!!:scared1: I have no itinerary, no map, no nothing! Were at a level 5 DIS crisis here, folks. :scared1:

Sounds like my kind of trip:rotfl2: Of course, I'm only 3 hours away so it's easier to say...

You're clear from DC South for tolls (unless you take the Sunway around Orlando--I have a Sunpass and can't remember how much the tolls are though...I4 at non rush hour is OK though, so I wouldn't go around on the toll road...

If you decide to stop, and can make it, Exit 3 in Georgia has the best hotel/food/gas area:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 (though I'm baised because I live there:lmao:)

Please plan to get through DC early. Earlier the better. The traffic builds all day long and stays that way. Have a safe and great trip. If you want to get news and timely traffic in the DC area is WTOP. They are on 103.5, 103.9 and 107.7. traffic is every 10 mins. The locals use them, they are #1 in the market.

The understatement of the year...:lmao::lmao:

Christopher,
This is good to know,I have called you Chris before and will try to make note in my mental bank. Please be patient with me though as there are many things stored up there between my ears so it might take a little time to go through and process it.

Were staying at pop...if you need to find me, just look for the room decorated with eagles stuff;) it would be awesome to run into a fellow dis dad there!:woohoo:

I'll PM you. Good luck with the drive!

Yeesh! So how many DIS Dads am I going to juuuuuuust miss meeting, because we don't get to Orlando until Oct. 1, and not to WDW until the 2nd/3rd? :confused3

I remember checking out your travel dates when you first announced you were going...sorry we'll miss you this time. We'll just have to try again! :thumbsup2

I knew Fed would be on top of the Georgia part of the trip.

I've never call you on it, though Carl. I do prefer the one over the other, but won't take anyone down because they use the other. :rotfl: My longest & dearest friend (known her since preschool, and tracked all the way through til the 12th grade with her) calls me by the shortened version. She KNOWS I prefer the other, but as she says, or at least she alleges, "you preferred the shorter version when we first met", so she retains the right to call me by that one. :confused3 I don't argue with her, even though I do claim ignorance to what she alleges anytime she brings it up. :rotfl2:

I'm sorry to bring the thread down again, but I have some bad news to share. I'm currently sitting next to my mom's bed in a hospice facility, watching her sleep. She had a brain aneurysm 6 years ago, and back then the doctors didn't think she would have very much longer. With surgery and therapy she was able to live at home for a little while, but has been in a memory care/assisted living place for the last few years. A few weeks ago she started taking a turn for the worse and the past weekend she was moved here. Basically, they provide comfort care, not curative. No one is sure what to expect - from a few hours to a few weeks.
Sitting here is very surreal and emotional.
It just reminds me that life is short and life is fragile. Don't pass up an opportunity to tell your family how much they mean to you. And most of all - live your life so you won't have any regrets. "I shouldn't have done such-and-such" or "I really wish I had done this-or-that." That's how my mom taught me to live, and I can only hope and strive to be half the person she is.

AMEN!!!

God bless you, and your family.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes, they really mean a lot to me.
I don't have any real updates. Talking to the nurses there, they didn't expect her to make it there much more than a day - and that was on Saturday. They came to the conclusion that my mom "has some pretty tough genes." They don't know the half of it. Her mother is still alive at 97, and her mother lived to be 95. My mom is a tough old farm woman. I've seen her, at 62 years old, get kicked by a cow, get up, and kick it back.

Things like this is what amazes me about the DDC.Here we have 500+ guys that get together and share their life experiences.Though some of us have never met,we are like family. We can come in here and share our happiness, our sadness,or just our thoughts. There is always someone here to pick you up when you need it, to offer you advice, maybe even just to talk to you,or even just be here to listen. I am honored to know the members of the DDC,and will be honored even more to get to meets some of you.
Very well said, sir. :thumbsup2

Barry, I dont know you, but I'm sorry to hear about whats going on. I cant even imagine how hard it is.
Oh, you know me well enough. We both have families that we love and a certain vacation destination that we both enjoy.

Chris, Barry,
Please know that we are keeping both of you and your families in mind during these very trying times (btw: I’m not sure that I’ve earned first name status yet, but it seemed appropriate here).
Thanks. And I'm with Christopher - my parents gave me that name for people to use it. I have it in my signature, so everyone knows it and everyone can use it. Once you're a member of the DIS Dads Club, you're in full standing!

You've got that right. Everyone there is sooo nice. They know what families are going through, and they go out of their way to make sure everyone is comfortable - family and visitors included.

Then Stopher and Barry it is (and thanks! :goodvibes).

I’ve been here long enough now that I’d like to be considered as a regular member of the group in good standing (not as chatty as some of y’all, but a consistent presence). Feel free to holler at me (or scream at, smack down or cuss out as necessary) via my given name (or at least the version I’ve used since leaving school many, many moons ago). Now as nicknames go, “Rob” is not near as cool as “Stopher”, but it is the one that works the best. Actually my best bud prefers to call me “Ginger”, which I’m willing to own, but as a result he now gets called Mary Ann. :lmao:

Humm… My last post might just open up an opportunity to toss a light subject out on to the court. Who all out there has a nickname (cool or otherwise) that they will actually own up to, :rolleyes1 and how did you get it? We might even need to add these to the members list on the first page. Having just suggested it, I guess that means I have to go first, so…

They call me “Ginger” :rotfl:

As I said, I picked up the moniker from a good friend of mine. The derivation here is actually pretty simple. I love the flavor of the stuff (the real thing that is, the hot stuff) and I’ve turned many folks on to it as well. I’m quite addicted to Ginger Ale, and there is a specialty brand sold down this way that’s unique to SC called “Benheim’s”. This brew will rock you back on your heels  (I highly recommend the “Old #3” formula with the red caps). If you’re traveling down I-95 or I-77 through the Palmetto state and you stop for gas, check out the chill case inside to see if they have any available (it’s not yo moma’s Ginger Ale). My DW also makes homemade candied ginger from fresh roots (for baking purposes) and I can eat this by the hand full as well (it’s even more addictive if you drizzle very dark bitter chocolate on it first… Mmm, Mmm, Mmm :thumbsup2).

Guys, I stumbled across a thread this morning titled "Manly Man that Likes Princesses" and if this isn't a thread for the DIS Dads to step up and weigh in on I don't know what is. We've already had one DIS Dad bring up the subject of the "Man Card." This could be our next big recruitment tool.:lmao::rotfl2:

Recently got an iPod Touch and immediately downloaded a bunch of DIS podcasts. Never used these before. Only took a week to get hooked on the podcasts an two to hear about this thread.

Looking forward to sharing and viewing!

I am outside the beltway and my commute is not too bad. That is due to time of day. leaving 15 mins earlier or later can really increase your commute.

:happytv:Guys, I think I qualify, we've made 4 trips to the world, ive planned all of them and love disney to death!

Most of all though I love just the thought of being able to give the gift of disney to my kids:banana:

I will drive out of my way by 30 miles to avoid the D.C. Beltway. :headache:

Quick question. Looks like I'll have a few down days on my next trip to Erie, PA. Anyone know of anything to do in that area?
