Ok, I give up. What kind of work are dis dads in that allows them to retire at 48 or 49? Did I mistakenly wander in to the Dis Independently Wealthy thread? What career path did I miss out on?

I'd like to know that, too! I'm a 59 year old chemical tech, make pretty decent money for no 4-year degree, and still can't even think about ever possibly retiring. I doubt I'll ever be able to afford to retire; I'll just pass away in my lab at work one day. Maybe I should have made the Navy a career; I could have retired in 1991! Does the Navy still have morse code operators? Does the Navy even have Radiomen anymore?

i would love to know what they do too ha ha. I have been working in my job for 23 years and I still have that many more to go before I can retire!! I am sure that I am going to die first.

I"m a Frozen Food Specialist, it is a Union job. 30 years in and I can get out. (unless ofcourse you want to keep working) I'll stay a couple years longer if it looks like the company will offer a buyout.

you may dare., this guy decides to build a house in the middle of a corn field. i went on the job w/ the heating contractor and one of his guys. while we were waiting, his guy got a no heat call and decided to leave us there in the "driveway".since the homeowner was on his way we thought no big deal, i was dressed for the cold. but not the antartic!!! the homeowner showed up after 20 min and let us in to the no heat,1/2 built house! i had to put a damper on his dream (internet) heating system. he had a 10k budget and 35k dreams!!! mind you, the guy was driving a benz and had a prevost sitting in the field next to the construction site. i guess he sold his house in jersey and is living in an apartment so he parked the motorhome on his lot. if your going to cry poverty to the guy designing your hvac system, dont show up in your new benz and park it next to you half million dollar plus motorhome than tell me you dont have the money ,what can i do about it.55 gallon oil drum and some wood dude, have a nice day. than i go into a house that the 80 year old lady has a boiler with a hole in it so big i can stick my head in it and shes trying to pay the contractor before were in the door.she was asking about warrenty, she wanted a boiler w/ a life time warrenty. shell out live me and the new boiler!!!

i dont think ill ever retire for one good reason. i couldnt stay at home all day with my wife!! one of us would not make it out alive!!!

Hardly independently wealthy. Teachers' Retirement after 27 years of service. I will work elsewhere a few years after that, but hope to make it on pension and 401K.

There's an on going joke in the architecture profession that architects don't retire, we just drop dead on our drafting tables. Basically, it's not a career but a way of life.

BTW, I swear I'm working on a TR, really, I am, honestly, I promise, it'll be up sometime before the next trip.....

I'm another one of those heated office desk job kind of guys - though I do have all of the eastern timezone & the midwest in my territory - which I have to go out into from time to time (see the ice palace pic a couple of pages ago). -6 this morning walking from the heated car to the heated office building... I'll take that 30 in the morning right about now!

i would have to add, thank god for school teachers! you put up with alot for a little. i still see alot of my old teachers from high school and i thank everyone one of them. putting up with some kids got to be hard. my 5th grade math teacher comes in were i work and i allways bust him, see, you told me i had to know math, heck, the computer does it all!!! he calls me a name and tells me there were no computers when i was in 5th grade!!!!hes retired and is building houses now. he said alot less stressfull!

Well, I'm not going to make the Forbes 500, but I do get a lot of days off and enjoy the time with my own children. I am a Dave Ramsey fan, and fortunately, have no debts other than DW's student loan (not much longer) and a decade left on the house payment. Dave wouldn't like me going to WDW every year, but you know, there are priorities...

Certainly not in CA anymore. My grandparents were both teachers, and retired back in the '70's with full pension equal to more than their annual salary and full health, dental & vision benefits for life. By the time my wife started teaching the packages being offered were considerably less. I'm sure today it's much much worse...especially given the budget mess that that state is in now. Some friends of ours (from CA) were visiting at our house last weekend (they have family here in IN), and were telling us that because the state is basically bankrupt, they've just announced a new tax of an additional 15 or 20% for the coming 2 years, I think they said. Right off the top. Supposed to be some kind of loan that will be repaid...but nobody knows when. Crazy.
