The DIS-Clutter Thread!

Well, since the kids have been sick for the last week or so and I've managed to get their cold, the house looked like a disaster this morning. So, I just finished a 100 Item Pick Up and it looks much better.

Here's how you play 100 Item Pick Up: You run around the house as quickly as possible and pick up anything that doesn't belong where it is -- the really obvious stuff. You have to pick it up with your hands and you can't put it down anywhere except where it belongs. As you pick up items, you count each item. When you're putting items away, you're looking for items to pick up. So, I'll pick up 5 toys in the livingroom (1-2-3-4-5) and take them to my son's room, where I notice and pick up two items of clothing that need to be washed (6-7) that I take into the laundry bags in the masterbedroom where I see an empty water bottle (8). On the way to the recycle bin, I pass through the kitchen where I find three more recyclables (9-10-11) that I drop into the recycle bin.

I can pick up and put away 100 items in about 30 minutes.

Now, the house is ready to vacuum and mop. I'd like to take some time this afternoon to work more on my filing too.

I got in to my kids' playroom today. I kept it simple for today, as I really don't want them panicked about their toys. So, I took a bucket and tossed the 'throw out' toys in it until it was full, then I got an armload of toys that could go to GoodWill. Emptied both and repeated. It didn't make a huge dent in the pile on the floor, but it made the bins that are overflowing capable of holding more stuff. I'll repeat it again tomorrow and see what happens.

I also got into my bathroom and cleaned off the small shelves that gather samples of lotion and such that I don't use. NOt a big job, but it'll make it easier later.

Got through the downstairs toys today and will get through the upstairs ones tonight-ish...
We are having a few friends over for dd's birthday, so I actually need to CLEAN the house (toilets and dusting and all) tomorrow. Then, this weekend, I will finish the major CLEANING (tops of the cupboards, scrubbing the floors, etc) which leaves the room from *heck* to do aaaallll next week.

Any ideas for DVD storage? We just have so many, but I don't want to throw cases away.

I am also finding some stuff for ebay, which I haven't done in forever. I don't even know how to add a photo. That's how long it's been.

I continue to make good progress in my home office. It really looks nice and all the papers are being put away, instead of just shuffled.

Once you decide to take the plunge that you don't really need cases anymore, disk storage is so wonderful. We've switched to those book cases for our music CDs and our computer CDs. However, like you, I haven't been able to part with our DVD cases yet. Therefore, ours are stored in one of those video cabinets with double doors. I figure as long as we still have video cassettes, we will need that cabinet anyway.

Good morning :sunny:

Well I haven't done anything this week, I had my DGD who is 19 months for 3 days. She left yesterday afternoon and I took a nap. Now I am not only cluttered but everything is a mess. I had to babyproof and she got into things :rotfl:

Next week will be better, my DD12 is going to stay with friends for a week so after work I will have more time to unclutter some of my things.

Today I am just going to clean, clean, clean!!!

Thanks cheyita! I know that the cases become a non issue because we have done it with our CD's, but the thought of throwing away my Disney DVD cases, well it makes me a little sick. :goodvibes Plus, we have several Dora, Elmo, Baby Einstein DVDs that will eventually be able to hit the garage sale table.
Today is dd's bday. I am just going to enjoy being with her, her 'best friend' is coming over to play with the new toy kitchen. Going to do the treadmill and clean during her nap.

The kids are commenting on how much easier life is now that we have un-cluttered! We clean house as a family, and most of our time was spent putting away junk. Now there is no junk to put away, so we can really clean in record time!!

The biggest thing for me now is not to stock-pile. When something was on sale at a great price I would buy several. Its no bargain if I have to spend time dealing with it. I did buy several yankee candles last week when they were on sale, but those will be gone at christmas time because I only bought what I knew I would give away.

Good luck to everyone and lets keep offering support to each other!!!

To Briarmom's DD......
HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Aww. Thanks NiteOwl! Our baby is not a baby anymore. I just don't know what I am going to do. :guilty:

bumping for the weekend! I am soooo tired. I'm sure we will get a lot done this weekend though!

Yeah...not so much. Anyway, what clutter are we getting rid of this week? I am doing the rest of the kitchen (tops of the cabinets/just a good cleaning).
I think I need a boost in my dis-cluttering!

I guess everyone is either uncluttered or tired from doing the uncluttering :goodvibes

I am off tomorow but not doing anything I have to go shopping for my trip next week. I am taking a mini vacation the end of this week to get my dining room in order and one closet, the hall one.

My DD21 is moving out after we get back so then I am going to have one more room to do something with.

I have been SO bad. I bought a new pillow today and saw the coolest food processor on QVC. It is by Kitchen Aid. I have been wanting a full size processor for a couple of years now.

How can I declutter if I bring things into the house! I thought I was the Jedi Master of downsizing! What happened....must find something to take out of the house before food processor arrives. Mavric the Siamese seems to think the new down pillow belongs to him...does that make it my clutter?

Anyone want the whole hardback set of Kay Scarpetta novels by Patricia Cornwell....seems like room on the bookshelf should make me have room available for the food processor right?

Tomorrow....onward....upward...excelsior!

Ok, I joined here awhile ago and never reported back. Last week was my week off from work to declutter (little to no DISing). We did not even get half the things done that we planned to! :scared1: BUT, I think we did do great, and are now on a roll in the right direction!

During last week:

Cleaned bathroom thoroughly. I am a clean freak about the bathroom, so this wasn't bad. Just had to be done for night time babysitters coming over during our Extreme Home Makeover!

Cleaned living room throroughly - moved most of DS's toys to his bedroom. We now have a living room! Before you could not walk through with all the toys on the floor constantly. Now, DS can play in his bedroom, or bring a few toys out to play (then put them away when done).

DS's bedroom: anchored dresser to wall, bought "car" rug, took out crib - put in toddler bed, emptied changing table (will be put in basement once there is room), thoroughly cleaned room, extra sheets/blankets into under bed box, organized his toys into toy box & bins. We did buy a really great closet organizer for his room at Sam's Club last week - will be installed asap (which includes cleaning out the closet then).

Cleaned up some of the dreaded computer room. Still a LONG way to go...

We spent the better part of 4 days in the basement! :earseek: Ok, it was worse than even I expected. We have a full, unfinished basement. We have lived in this house almost 6 years. You could barely walk through this basement! We took 5 truck loads to the dump (and truck is still parked in backyard almost full and ready for the dump again)! I have a HUGE yard sale "area" now (Sept. 10 & 11). I took one day to organize Christmas decorations, wrapping, and misc. I bought 4 more rubbermaid bins before we started this. Now I have 8 empty ones! DH is still organizing his Christmas lights (picture the Target Christmas light aisle, MANY still in their Target boxes, brand new). We bought chrome industrial type rolling shelving for my grocery stockpile. We bought same chrome type cart sheleving for cleaning supplies (slides right next to washer). I have 3 over-sized plastic bins overflowing with things to eBay. So, we are still finishing up the basement, but I can see a light at the end of the tunnel now.

Oh, and my letra tag label maker is my new best friend. Loved it before, but we are even closer now. ;)

First Happy Birthday to Brairmom's DD!

After my week of serious de-cluttering, it has taken me a week to recouperate. I am so proud of DS1, his room is still beautiful. He loves it that way. Both my boys play in there now. They came across some gold cross necklaces that were given to them as babies. They are both now wearing them on a daily basis. I like that.

I really have to get to DS2's room. It is a pit. I made them practice their instruments yesterday since school is starting. DS2 had to dig his saxaphone out from under a pile. It's a horrible catch 22. His room isn't organized, so he's not organized which makes his room worse. I will at least clear his floor over the next 36 hours.

We also have to label all the school supplies and verify that everything is there. We bought a couple of weeks ago and were very thorough with the lists, so I don't expect any surprises.

Hello Everyone,

Our town had it's annual Country Fair this weekend, which benefits the town fire department, so between going to the fair and volunteering at the fair, we were'nt home most of the weekend. I spent most of yesterday cleaning the house from this last weekend.

Today, I'm taking some items to Goodwill and working on my filing some more. My office is in sooooo much better shape than it was, but still only about half way done. I'm a work in progress. :)

It sounds like everyone else's dis-cluttering is going well!

wow, it sounds like everyone has been really busy!! I haven't gotten much more done, but I have to say I am enjoying my house much more now that its not as cluttered! Its much easier to clean because I was spending most of my time just moving stuff around. We'll see how long this last when the kids start school.

Keep up the good work!!!

It has been a while since I've been here to report. I finally got the office area moved but have a few things still left in the old area. I just don't want to bring it into the office space if I don't need it.

My plan for the day - finish going through "stuff" in old area, cleaning up DS room (with his help). If I get all of this accomplished it will be a good day.

Keep up the great work everyone.

Anyone out there still decluttering? I set up on-line bill pay this weekend which will help a lot with the hassle of paying bills -- I had it before we moved last year and loved how easy and fast it was to pay my monthly bills.

I had to go looking for a receipt in my office today, so I did a quick clean on all of the papers I touched. I threw a lot more papers into the shred bag. I also did a maintenance decluttering on the house to help keep it picked up.

We moved DD17 mos. into the toddler bed this weekend. When I mentioned it to my neighbor at a party this weekend, she said she would give me $30 for my crib, so I don't even have to haul it in to Goodwill after I take it in next weekend -- just give the neighbor a call and she'll send her DH over!
