The DIS Book Club Discussion Group: Round 5 - The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake

It's pretty expensive here, so I have requested it on interlibrary loan. Yes it will cost me £3, but it means that any copies available in the country, they will send it to me. :goodvibes

My local Barnes and Noble was out of the book , so I ordered it from Amazon.com.
I ended up getting the book for free , because I cashed in some of my QuickRewards earnings

Thanks for telling us about QuickRewards on the podcast , Teresa :disrocks:

Phooey ... I think I might have to sit this one out. I can't shell out the $15 for the book at the moment, and the estimated wait at the library went from 50 days to "undetermined" overnight. :scared1: We'll see what happens before the official start, I guess. Fingers crossed.

Having trouble getting TPSOLC...no copies available anywhere near me in any store!!! Mind-boggling:confused3 Hoping that I'll be able to get a copy while in the States mid-week. Heading to D.C. from Wed-Sun :woohoo:

Looking forward to it - whenever I make the top of the list for the library! (It's the little things - not picking up books at Borders all the time goes a long way toward funding Disney vacations! :) ) This is also the August selection for the Real Simple online book club, so I'll get lots of good discussions on this one. Woo!

XO
Liz

Exactly!! :thumbsup2

You mean you haven't found a coupon for it :rotfl:

I know that the book is quickly gaining popularity. I got it last week at Barnes & Noble and it was 20% off. It's only in hardcover right now. Hopefully you'll find it soon! :thumbsup2

Good timing! I just got back from vacation on Saturday to find the new book is one that's in my "to be read" pile already!

Checked the library and there are 92 holds on this one -- so I'm pretty sure this will be a kindle book for me.

This will be my first book discussion. I just purchased the book on Barnes and Noble. I'm looking forward to the group.

Michele

Okay, this made me laugh out loud. :rotfl:

From the online library catalog, when I checked just now.

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake
Bender, Aimee.
New York : Doubleday, 2010.

No copies currently available. (Estimated wait is 268 days)

This is not looking good for me. :lmao:

Our town's Borders had one copy and now it's mine! Luckily, I had a 33% off coupon. I've already finished the first section and will begin the second section, titled "Joseph", tonight. It's an interesting book.

Hard to believe that this book is so popular. It is a good read but I didn't think it was so good you'd have a hard time getting it. Oh well, I am enjoying it. It's pretty funky.

Looking forward to the discussions.

Have a great birthday trip Nikki!

Opted to "listen" and not to "read" the book, as the actual book had 69 people waiting for it!!!:scared1:

Looks like a great book. I love books that start out in the main character's childhood!

I'm currently listening to this book. Can I just say that authors should not read their own books? :sad2: Hire an actor. I am forever re-phrasing in my mnd.

The story is interesting, albeit it a bit out there as the book progresses. Aimee Bender writes with a beautiful turn of phrase. It's like looking at a beautiful but perplexingly impossible painting. What does it mean??? (LOL, it's a rhetorical question, as that is what we will be discussing. ;) )

I'm about 3/4 through and things get clearer and odder as it continues. I like that I don't have a concrete take on how this book will end up.

I'm hoping to get the reading schedule up in a little bit. Go ahead and start reading if you haven't already. :)

Library wait's down to 221 days. I'll hafta let you know what I think about this one next year. :rotfl:

Have fun in CA, Nikki!

I just started this book last night (on my new kindle) so I will have to join in. :)

Agree with your comments especially about the reader. This is the first of the book club books I've listened to that I didn't care for the reader. In addition to the poor phrasing she's pretty mono-toned.

Despite that I am really enjoying the book and it does get funkier
