That sounds about right. And FTR, I'm a complete Anglophile. It has nothing to do with not liking Brits or not wanting them to visit, and everything to do with security measures. I would expect the exact same response if I griped about foreign visitor security at Heathrow.

Glad to see the "usual suspects" have appeared.

Read the whole thread about security..... that was not my line.

As you know if you spent any time at all on the DB, PygMe and I don't get along. At all, really. ( Hi, PM!) So that was unnecessary and inaccurate.

I didn't take his summary to be direct quotes. But at any rate, what was your line?

With respect MHopkins2, I think as an American you just don't always really "see" the posts intended to offend other nationalities. As a Canadian, I can tell you there were often posts making fun of Canadians. There were some particularly nasty ones aimed directly at me. I noticed and remembered those aimed at myself and other Canadians. I think it is just human nature to remember the ones that snipe at you, and not take them so seriously when they are aimed at others.

Also, I would be seriously surprised if you were included in that "usual suspects' remark. It simply does not apply to you in any way, in my opinion.

I see them, I'm just generally pretty thick skinned when it comes to that sort of thing, whether it's directed at "me and mine" or not. (Ref the joke someone posted that made fun of Ethiopia, several European countries, the US, etc.) Although I will freely admit I haven't followed the politics/world events threads all that closely, and I may have missed the nastiness in the referenced thread. All I remember was the same vague outline that PM posted, but I've been known to be wrong. ;)

Thank you! :) And EP, if you weren't pointing that one at me, I apologize for misunderstanding.

I'm curious of something and if it has been addressed before I apologize.
Besides the reason that the board was closed for non-disney content, wasn't it also said that there were many complaints about it. Reports to the moderators I believe was said.
So, my question is was it the DBers that made the reports or people that wandered over and was appalled by what they saw.
My feelings are if you didn't like what you saw than why not just back out and go on your merry little way.
I lurked there mostly and most of the time found it enlightning and amusing.
I guess I don't understand the whole closing of it at all........
Perhaps a poll should be conducted to see if it was the regular DBers who complained to the mods or the visitors.
I mean if you visit anywhere and don't like it, most people don't go back and then complain to the owners how much they hate the place and they shouldn't be open and then try to shut it down (wal-mart doesn't count ;) ) you just don't go back. The content wasn't in your face, but behind "closed" doors.
Isn't it in a sense this is the same thing? I mean its one thing if the DBers create the uprising and rally to close it, but for others to do it just isn't right.
I'll miss the place.........maybe if everyone agrees to play nice, they'll let it re-open! :p

I always read it with a big bowl of popcorn,, was too busy licking the butter off my fingers to report any posts ;) I am glad it's still there in 'read only'. It still makes for interesting reading. I always knew that if there was something startling going on in the world, that I would be disgussed there.

well, I posted on a few of the debates, and also post on the CB so I guess I'm an "oxy-moron"???

Anyway, the debates I found to be 'worthwhile" were the debates where people actually debated. You know...debated with facts, not emotions. A lot of what people were doing ended up being "my way is the right way cause I said so"...instead of debating with facts.

A debate is to "win over" the people your debating with...the only way to do that is to get them to see your side...how? by FACTS..had the debates stayed with the facts, nobody would have complained and name calling wouldn't have happened.

I was in a few heated debates over there...the 4-wheeler threads for instance, and since i was a mom who bought her 7 year old a 4-wheeler, I was debating, others were "emotionaly caught up in the process"....

It's quite possible had more people taken debate in school, we'd have had more actual debates, and still have a DB?

Alex and the rest of you mods, thank you for what you do. I'm sure as evident by this thread it's a thankless job. i do not think it should have been moderated better....after all, we're all adults, we should have moderated ourselves....

Plus ca change, plus ca meme chose.

Seems to me the Debate Board was created to defuse some of the more heated conversations on the CB, and now it is being disbanded, and we are told to continue "debates" on the CB.

OK.

I'll admit to reading and occasionally posting on the Debate Board, especially in the last 6 months or so. The Community Board had just gotten really boring in my opinion -- seems like every post was about reality shows, exchanges, Ya-Ya sisterhood Swan/Dolphin cheerleaders (I lump these groups together since I could never differentiate between them), prayer requests, and tagging announcements.

Not that there is anything wrong with these, of course. Just not my cup of tea.

So I wandered over to the Debate Board to find some intellectually stimulating reading. And I did find some interesting opinions and exchanges. But the childish, petty name-calling I could certainly do without, and I saw how quickly those episodes disintegrated.

Yes, the Debate Board was hard to moderate, but we've had some great moderators there in the past (Nikole). But I think the Debate Board also tended to attract troublemakers and trolls -- and they are always bad news.

So bye-bye Debate Board. Maybe this WILL make the CB more interesting. We'll see. I'll continue to hang around. I have too many friends (and a few enemies too!) here.

But maybe this is all a hoax. Maybe Alex just wants to be the author of a thread with the all-time record number of views - up to almost 17,300 now!!;) ;)

I'll miss the Debate Board - I read it often , posted EVER so infrequently, but it was entertaining, no less. Hopefully at least we can get the "best of the DB" over here on the CB. :)

I haven't checked in, in a while and I was suprised to see this thread still at the top! :o

Yep. Us DBers can burn up disk space on the server just as easily as the CBers.

Why is it surprising? There were many people who enjoyed participating and lurkingt on the DB.

Well, apparently, the people who made the debate board among the most active on the site.
