The debate board.. please read

I believe if you went back and read some of the comments directed towards Canadians by certain posters, particularly those Canadians who lived in French Quebec, you would find that some posts were deliberate insults. I would quote them here, but posting anything from the DB is probably in murky banning territory. And, yes it was only a couple of posters, posters who have been completely absent from the CB since the closing of the DB, but it absolutely did happen.

Since I seem to be standing all alone, I will admit that I probaby took things too personally, hard not to when they are directed right at you. But I am sure as Americans you would feel the same way when your country is called unfair names.

It can be compared to the things that were said about the DB people last weekend. They took offense while many CB people were saying "what's the big deal?". It's a whole different perspective when you are the butt of the name calling.

Because I expect to be treated with the same respect that I treat others with. I don't insult so I expect not to be insulted.

Second, when DEBATING, name-calling only serves to deflect attention from the facts and the viewpoints and I feel that that is not in the spirit of debates. It's appropriate for a troll board. Which perhaps would be a useful thing here.

It's not about being easily insulted. It's about people degrading themselves and getting away from the debate.

If that is a real question, maybe I have an idea. Many of us were not reared with this technology, so we do feel "connected" to the people we talk with on the computer, just as we would in RL. Perhaps it is easier for you, being reared with the assumption that all is not what it seems when dealing with people over the computer. Hope I am making some sense. I have had my feelings hurt, and have apoplogized when my statements have possibly hurt others.

You are important to me even though I sometimes do not agree with anything you say! How dumb is that? I have actually been wondering when you turn 18, and when your graduation is, and whether you will continue to be "lazy" throughout the summer.

So that is my answer. The people on this board are a part of my life and I care about them. Call me silly or old-fashioned if you want!

Is being thin skinned a choice people make, or is it just a part of who they are? And do we only notice when other people react that way? I have certainly seen you lose your cool, in one of the first threads you started on the CB. At least it was my perception that someone had pushed your buttons. You probably saw it differently.

also, i think there is a difference between insults and hate speech. if someone says they don't like my hair i can get over it prety easily (hey i don't like it either!), but if someone says all atheists should die or something like that, yeah i might get a little upset.

then again, i tend to consider the source. i get more upset about it if it is someone i consider a friend.

I was referring to the "big deal" being made over the perceived hostility and rudeness of some DB members... from the topic made to whine about a "rude" PM to people here using being offended as a justification to support the closure of the board... people care just too much. If people have their "buttons" pushed online, then it's just that: There's a big difference between responding in kind and constantly complaining.

To be honest, with all due respect to the OP of that one, I was sort of mystified by the hurt about the nasty PM too. I mean, it would be one thing if katerkat or AmyA suddenly started sending me hate mail, but some random schmuck (likely troll) poster? Don't know em, don't owe em, don't care.
