DF, if you are talking about this board, as being the CB, I beg to differ. I report, when I see them, posts where the writer bypasses the purpose and spirit of the filter, by inserting their own * or **, thereby bypassing the filter, and which was covered, quite specifically, along with the consequences, in this posting from Alex some time ago. As for name calling, just the other night, some sleaze ball (doing my own name calling here) said to me, **** you, Dan Murphy. I reported it, as did several others, that post to the moderators, and it was deleted (maybe this one will be too). That same sleaze ball made the exact same comment to the entire CB in a post, it was reported, and deleted. I do hope also that that psoter was banned. To me, that is name calling. I see it here, often enough, maybe not as in-the-gutter as that remark, but there is/has been, plenty of name calling, along with attempts to bypass the filter in the past, and both uncalled for, IMO.

For a business I may possibly agree with you (I can at least see the argument), but as many people have mentioned they came to this site largely because they felt the debate board provided something to them. Once here they would also contribute to other aspects of the site and have developed a "customer loyalty" to the DIS, wdwinfo.com and Dreams Unlimited travel. As a business decision, I think it's a debatable one.

However if we are indeed a cyber community I disagree with the decision that's been made. On a personal level I found it invaluable to be able to get an understanding of how some/many Americans feel on issues that affect the "real world" in which we live. IMHO the American media is very insular and the internet is one of the great instruments that shrink our world and give us the chance to "converse" one to one. I find that being within a site that is ostensibly for another purpose means that one gets a good spread of backgrounds and interests, you really are talking to "the man on the street" I feel that one gets a much better feel for a society if you're in a wide based crosssection of a society as opposed to a minority interest "pressure" group.

If we are a community, there's a big wide and at times bad world out there. I understand there are those that don't want or need to share in the murkier side to our existance, but there are places on this site for them to shelter from that. There are those who feel they learn from the ability to share others views on these issues and by closing down this aspect of the site I feel you are doing not only them a disservice, but for those that don't want to look at these issues may stumble into them when they are aired on alternate boards.

If we are a community, I think it would have been proper to at least have allowed some discussion on the subject prior to making a decision.



To those I've had the chance to debate with (and against) I'd like to say that with very few exceptions I've enjoyed the chance to agree and disagree with you at various times. I've always found the insight valuable no matter if I agree with you or not. I'd particularly like to say thanks to, in no particular order AFR, Emmagata, Dmad, treesinger, SOTM (couple of nice posts on this thread IMHO) , Doug dub and hopkins2 . I'm sure I've missed a few out.

Back at ya, vernon! Well said, my friend. You and acepepper provided much welcome insight that I would not have been able to attain anywhere else, I feel.

Exactly FIK JJ/VH posted on here stating he would not debate on here or something to that effect makes you wonder if he didn't just try to stir the pot a little to much.

I felt that it was right to starting debating on the CB board.

As for stiring the pot as i said many times if you didn't like the debate you didn't have to take part.

I felt and i still do that there was a small group who tried ( i say tried because they never got to me ) to bully the majority of posters on the DB.

And as Disney Dee has said most of the complaints were

Posters getting around the word filters, name calling, posts that were offensive to other posters, and all out not following the guidelines.

Maybe if some members had of kept their cool - instead of using personal attacks as a means of debating, the debate board would still be here.

So Alex can you tell me WHY a Disney site needs a weight loss board ( W.I.S.H), a Flower & Garden board, a Just Say Thanks board, a Cooking Crafting & Scrapping board, a In Memoriam board, a Sea World / Discovery cove board, Universal boards, or a community board? Under the guidlines you have set above these boards should be gotten rid of too.

No Alex I can't tell you why a "Disney" site would need a debate board BUT I can tell you why THIS site would. This site is more then just Disney. This site is a community. One with different people that all have one thing in common, a love for Disney. We all have different personalities and other things that interest us. Thus the need/ desire for other boards on this site that aren't JUST Disney.

The reason we NEED a debate board is to keep the heated topics off the other boards. If memory serves me right the debate board was shut down once before and it turned into a huge mess on the community board so was reinstated.

There is from time to time ugliness on both the debate board and the community board. With not having the debate board it will ALL be on the community board. Some of the people on the community board tend to be more sensitive ( myself included) and will end up going into threads they don't realize are heated discussions and get hurt. If the debate board is in place we know that is and area to stay out of and don't get hurt feelings.

IMHO this is going to cause more problems and hurt then needed and may cause people to leave this site.

I ask that the powers that be to reconsider this decision. Alot of inocent people will get hurt in this and I know that no one wants that to happen.

jj/VH or whoever you are this week, maybe if people weren't throwing their toys out of the pram and instagating fights with other posters the debate board wouldn't have been shut down.
Rememeber the old saying when your pointing the finger at some one three fingers are pointing back at you.

I see the reason why it was shut down as simple. It was the Mods fault, plain and simple.

The DB got particularly nasty as of late. As a matter of fact, it got nasty about the same time JJ showed up. JJ got banned, and it cooled down a bit...untill he came back as VH.

Or, until he came back as... OBVIOUSLY VH..spewing his hatred along the way. He should have been rebanned but the mods let him stand KNOWING who he was.

BTW, I have a special place in my heart for the British...a kindrend spirit, if you will. JJ/VH has really done a lot of damage to those feelings with his constant anti-American spewing and ranting.

I know, I know, JJ is going to post how I am calling him names....but I am not. I am calling a spade a spade.

Sorry Jana but you didn't read everything I wrote. We don't "need" any of the other boards either but we feel they make a positive contribution to the site or at least are neutral. The debate board has been the source of endless complaints and issues over the years.
This "theory" that it will all spill over on to the community board is just not valid. We can and will protect the CB from innapropriate posting.
I've been looking at the CB for the past few days since we closed debate and most of what I have seen is a bunch of "the sky is falling" but very little actual debate or contreversy.

So Alex, ya know I love you, but are you saying you want to purge the CB of ANY type of "contoversy"? It sounds so Orwellian.

I know, I know, I've heard the same mantra before. The CB will not change, we will just protect it from smut!

You should write science fiction novels. I bet that they would make for some interesting reading!

We didn't say you guys can't debate anymore! We just said you have to debate in a respectful manner - you know, the way an intelligent debate should be held. You guys weren't acting like "Meet the Press" - it was more like "Jerry Springer"

I look forward to reading some debates where everyone can contribute to their beliefs without being called an idiot or worse.

Actually minniepumpernickel I am one of the bigger advocates against overmoderating. We can, however and will enforce the guidelines.
Like I said if you want to read fiction.. read some of the "we are the debate borgs and we will be taking over" or "the sky is falling" posts
