Tammi - My friend has a theory that the cat chews because we declawed her. She chews other things, too. Like the spindles on the back of my dining room chairs, the wooden knobs on the dresser in the bedroom, the cord to the fax machine (which I finally unplugged), my Crocs. She chews like a puppy! But she will be 2 years old in April so she should be past chewing ANYTHING!

Interesting. Mine are declawed and they don't chew anything. Maybe you have a dog inside a cat's body.

I'm so sorry Jen, I can imagine you are feeling pretty bad right now. Just remember what an awesome, beautiful person you are, and that the right person will recognize that some day.

Thank you so much everyone for your kind words..I am pretty down tonight and you guys have cheered me up a bit..I just keep feeling that i did something wrong and what is wrong with me, i guess i just didnt want to be alone for yet another christmas and new years..thanks for being there for me tonight guys!

My cat has some sort of species identity disorder! Our other cat is declawed and she has no behavior issues. The cat we had before Aurora was declawed, too. She had a tendency to bite, but she didn't chew on things. She just bit US if she got tired of being petted. The cat at work is declawed and she doesn't chew things, either. So maybe there isn't any connection.

Don't feel too bad, because we think our dog has species identity disorder with a goat. She eats paper like you have never seen before. I honestly believe she prefers it over food. She even ate DS's $25 mall gift certificate off the kitchen table one time years ago. We have to be sooo careful what we leave out, and if she does get something we cannot get her to drop it. Very frustrating! Otherwise a very sweet dog.

Welcome to Tree 2006, Part 2! We bought a tree at Target with no lights. DH bought some separate lights to go on it. Multi colored.

So my big, beautiful, white lighted, musical tree is being packed back in the box and this new tree will go up. Stupid cat. I told DH we should put her in the kennel until after Christmas so I can have my fabulous tree. But he said no. Boarding the cat for a week would cost almost as much as a second tree, and we already bought a second tree. Might as well just deal with it.

We have a big dog crate that will hold our cat, a cat box, water fountain and food. When Riley misbehaves he is placed in the crate until the situation is rectified. You might want to check yard sales etc to have one on hand for next year. Ours was free and we have had to use it many times.

I'm not sure where I'm going from here. I go back to the chiropractor on thursday for a follow up. The internist will see me on Wednesday if I choose to make an appointment, but I think she is just going to send me to get a lung x ray and I have absolutely no breathing concerns. I may just call her again rather than going up. I think that I won't have any good answers until after I meet with the urologist on Jan 2. I will definitely call her though as I will be out of pain meds soon.

Becky, what reflux med did they put you on again? I may ask her about it. It couldn't hurt.

Have you ever tried the bitter apple spray to try to stop the chewing? I have to admit I've never had a problem with a cat chewing, and I have had declawed cats, so I'm not sure I agree that's the cause, but who knows? We used the bitter apple spray to try to get our dog to stop chewing when she was a puppy and had mild success, but I have heard it works on cats too.

Cats hate water, this is where your son comes in. Arm him with a water pistol and when he sees the cat doing something that she shouldn't have him squirt the cat. I hear that after a while the cat will stop the behavior. I've never had to try it. Our cat is also declawed, but he has never chewed anything except his treats.

Deb - My mom said we should put her in a cage. But the only cage we have is the carrier we use for the vet and it is very small. I'll have to keep an eye out for one.

Our cat has always thought that he was a dog. Chris saved him from a woodpile when he was very young. We think he was less than 4 weeks old, but it was getting very cold out and he was overrun with fleas. He probably would have bleed to death before he froze. We had our male dog at the time and the cat would follow him around, lay with him, pet him and even eat his dog food. Even now he will use his nose to lift our hands when he wants us to pet him, just like our dogs use to.

Ellen - We talked about a squirt bottle, too. The problem is that nobody is home during the day, and after we go to bed the cat does whatever she pleases. I don't think it would stop her from chewing unless one of us was sitting right there with the bottle. She bit through a full can of Pepsi once, and for a couple of days she would run if we went towards her with a Pepsi can. But she got over it.

Elizabeth, sorry to hear about the cat and the wires. Is there anyway you can contain the cat away from the Christmas tree, that way you don't have to worry about the wires. Lock it in a bathroom, bedroom, etc and put all its stuff there. Whatever the case my be good luck with the cat/tree issue.

Thank you. I'm calling the doctor on wednesday and that is one option that I intend to explore. I have really been paying attention and can possibly see a connection between eating and the pain. It doesn't seem to always be directly related, but it certainly is worth persuing.

Becky - Our apartment is pretty small, so there isn't a good way to lock up the cat unless we had a crate like Deb suggested. The only room off limits to her is DS's room, and she is even allowed in there as long as he is in there, too. I guess we could lock both cats in the master bedroom during the day and keep their food & litter in our bathroom, but they wouldn't be very happy with that arrangement.

Be careful if you decide to confine her. Cats like to shall we say spray when they are angry. Riley prefers to make closets when he is angry with us.
