The Dance Mom Thread

Well, I've been looking at the title of this thread forever and thought I might just jump in. We are a crazy dance family. LOL My DD 9 has been dancing at the same studio since just before she turned 3. Right now she takes 4 classes, but would take more if we had the time and the money. Right now she takes:

Intermediate acrobatics
Ballet
Jazz
Tap
Musical Theater

(jazz and tap are combined into one class)

We should be seeing costumes and getting the recital numbers soon. Our show isn't until late June so I think we might be behind a lot of people in that respect. We are "in the dark" until sometime in December of January.

She is in a local parade this Sunday dancing to "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree". It's an adorable dance. I just hope it's not too cold.

Hey Dance Moms....what is everyone getting there dancers for Christmas?? (related to dance....not everything else....LOL!!!!) My tween is getting a big Vera Bradley bag to use for her dance bag. But not sure of what else to get her pertaining to dance. I have already spent a fortune on the typical tween stuff....but always like to get her a little something pertaining to dance!!!!

DD will be getting new pants and tie-dye tee with her studio logo. In some classes they're allowed to wear these instead of tights and leotard. Also, she'll be getting some hair stuff, new tights and leotards. She does need new ballet and acrobatic shoes, but I'll need to take her with me for that. So, she'll probably get a "note" in her stocking about those. If I can find a duffle in her Vera Bradley pattern (Riviera blue) for not too crazy a price I am going to pick that up too. Otherwise, probably a studio logo duffle.

Our studio has only a few rules. Ballet is a mandatory dress day, hair in a bun, black leo, pink tights, ballet slippers on and ready to work as soon as the door opens for class. For Dance Tech they have to have booty shorts, a tight top of some kind (Cat lives in her tanks and bra tops), and dance paws. Other than that they can wear what they want, which explains all the dance outfits we have.

They have to wear black pants, red studio logo hoodie, white turtle neck, black sneakers, red or green gloves and a Santa hat. I am trying to figure out how to get the Santa hat to stay attached to her head since she'll be doing cartwheels, hand springs, etc. during the parade.

Each class has a specific dress code. Ballet is fairly strict with a black leotard and pink tights. Jazz/tap is any color leo and tights. Since this class comes right after ballet, my DD usually just throws on a pair of colored shorts or pants also. For musical theater they were studio logo pants or shorts and tees. For acrobatics they can wear a leo and tights or the bike bottom leotards, which is what all the girls wear. They also have to have certain colored shoes for each class, pink for ballet, tan jazz, tan tap, and white acro.

I actually can help with this! A trick, find a hat that is as snug as possible, next attach an elastic piece across it, I make it so it can snap in and out, I snap one side, pull the elastic under half of her hair, snap the other side, pull her hair into a ponytail and then pin the sides of the hat.

Make sure you get her great gloves that are really thick, that rough pavement can really beat up their hands.

That is brilliant. I will try it, I think. Yes, we're all too aware of the pavement on her poor hands. Last year the weather was horrible and the street was so wet and horrible. Hopefully we won't have that again.

She's actually more excited for next year when she'll be part of the ABC Parade in Philadelphia as part of the Fantapulous group which is made up of 100s of tappers that dance in front of of Art Museum in Philadelphia at various times in the parade. She almost feels like she just needs to "get through" this year's parade so she can do next year's LOL

Each year, the older Company girls get a lecture on how important it is to wear proper ballet attire (bun, black & pink) to ballet class because the younger Company girls look up to them.

Our studio started participating about 5 years ago I think. I am not sure how they got involved, but if you ever watch the ABC parade (used to be the Boscov's parade, but I think this year IKEA is sponsoring it, I think) you'll see they have probably 500 tap dancers open the parade, do a number in the middle, and close the parade. If you search on youtube for fantapulous there are some videos there.

I wonder if there is anyway for my daughter to take part in something like that....even tho her studio doesnt? I love her studio....but really think they should have more opportunities to perform at things like that. That is one thing that our studio is sort of lacking.

I wonder if there is anyway for my daughter to take part in something like that....even tho her studio doesnt? I love her studio....but really think they should have more opportunities to perform at things like that. That is one thing that our studio is sort of lacking.

I am pretty sure you have to be with a group. I suppose you could always find out of a nearby studio is performing with them and see if you could join them. Or maybe you could help them get it started at your studio?

I think dancers "win" the right to be in some of the groups in the parades. Last year at drill team officer's camp, if a dancer earned some ribbon or another, the dancer could be in the Macy's parade if she wanted. (I don't know anyone who's done it.)

Ok I guess I'm going to sneak into this thread I guess my mom started it ages ago.
So for what my group is doing this year for costumes for our santa parade is:
Our Junior Girls are going to be Santas Babies this year which there costume is really cute
But the Seniors are all wearing there santa baby similar thing but its more of a jacket then dress.
I'm not competiting this year and just doing company so that will be interesting.
But instead of competiting were performing in Disneyland!!
So that should be fun but I guess I'm going to have to say goodbye to my competitive nature.

Okay Dance Moms what routines\songs is your dancer doing this year? Have you seen them yet? What are your feelings about them (love 'em\ hate 'em)?

Currently were focusing on getting done with the Christmas recital so I'll tell you what were doing there.
For Company were doing: Ding Dong Merrily, Rockin Around the Christmas Tree, Its Being to look a lot like Christmas
For Jazz were doing: Happy Elf, and something else which I cant think of currently
For Ballet were doing: Silet Night
I guess my moms seen the Jazz dances so far but parents arent aloud to view company and Ballet nights dont work for her.

But for Performance season/recital I dont know what were doing other than for company
Company: This Is My Time, Hot Honney Rag, You Cant Stop the Beat then most likely 4 more numbers
We also did a bunch of Harvest Shows.
Which we did for those:
This Is Halloween and Curella Devil (The Juniors did Monster Mash and something else)
I'm also hoping to do a lyrical solo if possible

If you dont mind I'll hint you towards here at least at our studio there really isnt a required dress code even though they tell the new familys there is one every year. Normally for Ballet most of our girls wear leotards, booty shorts, tights of any color, and a tee over with ballet shoes. On Jazz day most girls where jazz pants and a t-shirt with Jazz shoes. Which is the same on company days. Which is the same in lyrical etc. except with dance paws.

Just For Kix (JFK) is based out of Brainerd, MN but is offered in 7 states (MN, IL, IA, NE, ND, SD and WI). It's HUGE. Just in my town alone I believe there are between 200-250 girls. That is just where I live! They mainly focus on danceline/kix. Some locations offer jazz, tap, etc. Jazz is also offered in my area too. My daughter does Kix and Jazz. This is her 7th year. Once you hit 4th grade you are able to do compititions. The compitiions are within the JFK organization only. There are that many towns, cities, locations involved that they can have their own competitions. That was a little weird to me at first (I also danced as a child for many years - so the whole JFK thing was very new to me). Each year they also dance at WDW in June. We love it.
