The Dance Mom Thread

2 of our companies kind of got slammed in the awards, but the overall judging was very, very tough. I've never seen so many high silvers handed out -- one of our companies even got one & that's not going to sit well w/ our director.

Sorry about the companies getting slammed in judging. We also found NUVO's judging to be very tough with TONS of high silvers handed out (and no DJ Picks for the entire competition). But we also thought it was pretty fair. Out of 16 dances our studio submitted, we had 10 high silvers and 6 golds, and 3 of the golds were high socres for their division! The gold dances truly earned their gold! I hope your director looks at the big picture, and really doesn't get mad.

Well, we have a competition this weekend. The schedule is out, and I am in for a long Saturday! My DDs have 7 dances between them, and all 7 dances take place between 5:30 and 9pm. DD1 has 2 5-dance quick changes, and her HH dance is the last one of the competition on Sat! Just shoot me now!

Anyone else competing/conventioning this weekend?

Yes, we have a competition next weekend and still don't know when the girls dance. Kinda hard to plan the rest of the weekend!

I know what you mean! My daughter has a competition that starts on Friday, and we still don't have a schedule.

Last weekend we were really on the go. DD had a competition in New Hampshire, about an hour and a half drive, one way. She also had a performance with the modern dance company that she's apprenticing with. It was touch and go for awhile because we weren't sure if it was going to be physically possible for her to attend both events. You can't be in two places at the same time.:) Finally, a few days before both events, we found out that her hip hop comp team would be performing Saturday evening an hour before the start of the other dance event (which was taking place back in Maine, almost two hours driving time from the comp venue). It was not an option for her to miss the dance competition, but the studio director was fine with her missing the awards ceremony later that night.

The director of the modern dance company did everything possible in order for DD to be able to perform with them. She started the show a bit late, and put the companies pieces in the second half of the show. As soon as the hip hop comp team finished their number, DD ran backstage, changed into street shoes, and we ran for the car that my husband had already brought to the front of the theatre. We drove back to Maine and got to the theatre right at intermission. Everything went off without a hitch, and DD was so happy that she got to perform in both events.

Of course, we had to return very early the next morning to New Hamsphire. DD had a solo that was scheduled early Sunday morning, and a Trio for that afternoon.

Now, I have to say something about this particular competition. It was Showstopper, and it was the first time my daughter's studio attended one of their competitions. I really was not impressed with Showstopper. They have a wonderful website that makes it sound like a fun competition. It wasn't. There were a lot of fabulous dancers and dance numbers. No problem there. And everything went on time, and there were big, crystal clear monitors on each side of the stage. However, there didn't seem to be any excitement, for lack of a better description, particularly during the award ceremonies. It was very cookie-cutter, here's your trophy, good job, next, and so on.

There were no "fun" type of awards given out, like many competitions do, and the same woman gave out every award and said the SAME thing to every dancer. You knew she didn't really know which number she was rewarding. If it was tap, her standard remark was, "marvelous tapping!", and for hip hop, "great energy!", and so on. A lot of competitions will do things to rev up the dancers before the awards are given out. Not Showstopper.

The thing I really didn't like was the way they announced the particular placement of each number. Most competitions won't even give a 1st or 2nd place in a certain division if there aren't at least ten numbers in that catagory. In Showstopper, if you were the only person in your age group/division/style or whatever, you received 1st place. It had nothing to do with how you scored or what medal you received. But, worse than that, in my opinion anyway, was that they gave a placement to everyone. Meaning that, if there were 17 dancers in a certain catagory, the announcer would start at the bottom and announce every single placement. Do you really want to know that you're number 17 out of 17, and have everyone in the audience realize you came in last place. I don't know, it just seemed odd to me.

Despite all that, DD did very well, earning a double platinum for her solo, and coming in 2nd in her age division, and 3rd overall. Her comp trio earned a double platinum, coming in 1st in their age division, and 2nd overall. Their hip hop number didn't do as well, receiving a gold.

That was the other weird thing. If a dancer came in 1st in their age group, even if they were the only dancer in that catagory, and despite what medal they earned, a piece of their routine was shown on the big screens when they received their medal or trophy at the awards ceremony. Yet, if you earned a double platinum and had a very high score, and you were up against a lot of others in your catagory, they didn't show any of your routine, unless you came in 1st place.:confused3 To me, it would make more sense to showcase the double platinum winners since they were the ones the judges scored high.

Geez, didn't mean to go off on a tangent! Anyway, it was a fun, but exhausting weekend, and we have another one coming up. But we don't have to try to be in two places at once this time!:)

ETA: I forgot to mention my thoughts on the previous post about the April Fool's joke. NOT funny!

Absolutely understand the pain of planning in the fog waiting for schedules to be announced. In two weeks when DD13 competes, the studio has also warned us to keep the entire weekend open to deal w/ the choreographer they are bringing in for an upcoming event -- besides the uncertain competition schedule. That wasn't enough to keep me up nights in a cold sweat, so I thought DD10 should have First Communion that Sunday, as well. :scared:

Parenting dancers, it ain't for wimps.

We do Showstoppers, too. It was at Showstoppers a few years ago where a group danced to what I have since found out is the original version of "Let's Get it Started" - "LET'S GET RETARDED." The girls were in the 9-12 year old age range. It was extraordinarily offensive, because the whole point of the dance was looking and acting "retarded." All of their costumes had something "wrong" with them, like the girl in the pink tutu had big dark knee pads. BUT, what took the cake is that they were the only dance in their category, so, with a Silver, they got first place AND had their routine shown again on the monitors!!!! I wrote to complain to Showstoppers afterwards but didn't receive a response.

That's exactly what I mean! You have awful routines getting silver medals, which if I remember correctly is the lowest medal at Showstopper, but because they're the only ones in their category they get first place and are shown again on the screen. Yet, a double platinum winning solo or group number in a large category (which means a lot more competition for that person/group) doesn't really get recognized.:confused3

But, of course, there was a lot more wrong with the number you described. I agree, extremely offensive.:sad2:

Off topic, but your post made me realize how many times I mispelled "category" in my original post! I hate to make grammatical/spelling errors!:upsidedow

Not a mom, but an ex-dancer/ dance sister!

I danced from the age of 1.5 to the age of 17. I was a member of a company and took classes. We only competed about twice a year because we performed so much (Carnegie Hall, Australia-200 olympics, Disney, other theme parks, cruise ship, local events, etc.). At 15 I transferred from my public high school (and their good dance program) to a performing arts high school (excellent dance program). I loved it, but I haven't danced since high school graduation.

My sister- Kay- is 15 now. She is really into hip- hop and is in a competition team. They are pretty good, they are new and only started to compete this season. They only did 2 competitions but won both. She is amazing at modern (my favorite) and lyrical but doesn't enjoy them as much. She is also REALLY good at ballet and has been on pointe for 5 years officially (although one teacher did have her do a pointe solo at the age of 8, after that my mom decided she wasnted her to wait a little longer).

I don't know her shcedule as I don't live with them but I know she spends ALOT of time at the studio

Your post intriques me. My daughter is 17 and will graduate from high school in a few months. She is going to the University of Arizona in the fall. She is an extremely talented dancer, very versatile, and very passionate about dance. However, she is not sure if she'll pursue dance in college.

From your post, it's obvious that you've been very passionate about dance and that it has been a huge part of your life. I'm curious (and if you think I'm being too nosy, you don't have to answer:) ) why you haven't danced and what you want to do now, or what you are doing now. Is dance still a part of your life in some form or other?

My hope is that eldest DD will not pursue dance beyond HS, but that she will take some dance in college as electives because I think it will help her function better, since she's used to such a heavy diet of dance along w/ her academics.

Home from Encore, tired but happy! The dancers did very well, and we had a great time. Here is the breakdown for my DDs' dances:

DD1:
Duo: High Gold (yes, this is the same duo that I had concerns with several weeks ago! Both girls danced beautifully)
Trio: High Gold, 2nd place in junior (9-12) duo/trio division
Group Tap: Platinum, 1st place in the petite (8 and under; we have several younger ones in that group bringing down the average age!) large group division. This dance also received a "Terrific Tappers" judges' award.
Group Jazz: High Gold, 3rd in the petite large group division. This dance also received a "High Energy" judges award.
Group Hip Hop: Platinum, 1st in the junior large group division

DD2:
Group Jazz: High Gold, 3rd in the petite small group division
Group Tap: High Gold

Our studio also took 1st (Platinum) and 5th (High Gold) in the petite solo division and 1st (Platinum), 2nd (Platinum) and 4th (High Gold) in the petite duo/trio division

Overall a good weekend for our studio. Although, I don't know how the older dancers faired yet. We were on a completely opposite schedule from them, so we only saw a couple of their dances, here and there.

I keep having to remind my older dd not to pick a college solely on the basis of the cheerleading team, since her goal is to become a profesional teacher, not a professional cheerleader. :rotfl: Thus far my younger dd, the dancer, hasn't expressed an interest in dancing in college.

And today was another good day for our dance team. They got to dance at a district-wide cultural festival. And then the coach told me that the girls' picture was on the school website, a shot of the girls with their 7 trophies form Myrtle Beach.

The girls also got to weat their new t-shirt, the one that announces their championhips in Staten Island and Myrtle Beach.

Wow, sounds like an absolutely incredible performance!!! Mom gets a platinum first place award from the mom's panel for dealing w/ endless amounts of stress over this. Congratulations!

We were at Starlight in Arlington, TX last night....we didn't get out of there until 11:50 pm!!!!! They really need to limit the total number of dances a studio can bring. One studio had so many dances that at the end, we were only waiting for them..they'd dance, we'd wait 15-20 minutes until they changed, then they'd dance again. It was ridiculous....even more ridiculous that that studio won the "Outstanding Studio Award"...any studio that brings so many dances that it makes the competition run almost 2 hours late is not deserving of special awards in my book (of course, Starlight raked in the competiton fees from them!)

The competition was at the performance center at UT Arlington. They closed the concession stand at 7:30 pm, so this whole crowd of people was sitting there for over 4 hours with no access to food! Everyone was informally sharing what they had...we needed someone with a "fishes and loaves" ability. If someone had been smart, they would have ordered about 50 pizzas from Dominoes and charged by the slice-they could have made so much money!

WOO HOO! My daughter had her last competition this weekend!!!:woohoo:

And, I have to say, she went out in style!!!! Her studio competed this weekend at the Starquest Competition in Concord, NH. She took platinum, first place, and top senior soloist! There were over 90 entries in the senior solo division, and there were a lot of amazing dancers. As the MC announced the top ten soloists, he had each one come to the front of the stage to receive their award. By the time he got to the fifth or fourth place, we were all thinking she must not have placed in the top ten. Even though she won platinum, there were about thirty-five or forty others that also scored high enough for platinum.

Finally, the MC announces second place, then we hear a drum roll, and he shouts the number and name of the first place winner, and it was our daughter!! Her whole studio was up on their feet clapping and cheering. It was truly a moment she'll never forget! She received a very large trophy, a platinum plaque, platinum ribbon, first place ribbon, $50. check, and a $25. gift certificate.:thumbsup2

DD has done very well all season, always placing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. However, Starquest was a competition with a lot of excellent dancers and it was so exciting for her to finish out the season on such a high note.:) Her senior trio number and small group hip hop also received platinum awards, with the senior trio placing fifth overall.

Congrats to your DD, luvflorida -- that's absolutely awesome! The dance shots are wonderful, but the casual shots show why she won, an incredible ability to put forth wonderful & expressive personality. So awesome!

There is a lot of truth to that! She does have an expressive personality that comes across in her dancing and she has been told by dance teachers, directors, choreographers, judges, etc. that she "owns the stage", "has the audiences attention from the time she steps on the stage until she walks off it", and "the passion and total commitment are always present and genuine".

That last part is so true, because I believe you can tell when a dancer's movements are contrived, or that the dancer is not really feeling the music or dance. You can't fake being genuine. I remember last year at a competition when DD was performing a different solo and she received a special award ribbon for "most commanding performance". She usually gets a lot of positive comments on her facial expressions when doing a hip hop number, too. It's just her and again, it's real.

Awesome, luvflorida! I do hope that you are keeping her grounded. A few years ago we had some sisters at our studio who were that good-won nationals with their solos, etc. Unfortunately, they were both of the "rules don't apply to me" philosophy. No one was very sad when they left the studio. DD is in school with them, and apparantly they take the "rules don't apply to me" philosophy with them to school.

Honestly dance was a major part of my life and I loved it but I wanted a different career. I really want a career in neuroscience which is what I am pursuing (neuropsychology). I have a passion for working with autistic individuals.

I wanted to hold onto it in some ways but for me taking class would only make me want it more, I am kind of all or nothing like that. I guess I gave it up cold turkey, lol. I haven't taken a dance class in years. It was hard on me since it was my form of expression and my escape but I really didn't want it as a career and I thought I had to outgrow it sometime. Also, I really don't have the time for it. I really want a Ph.D, but in order to get it I have to work two jobs to get through college (undergrad full-time). I am also in charge of a neuroscience study which will look good when applying to Ph.D programs. I have no time for dance.

I still live through one of my best friends who I went to high school with. He goes to the same college as me as a dance major and is a member of a company so I still get to be a part of the field through that and my little sister, who is an incredible dancer.

I think I will always retain the dedication and commitment I learned from dance. It has helped me in every aspect of my life. I do miss it, but it gets easier as time goes.
