The things we do for our kids. DS got a thank you note for a birthday present and was upset about tearing the envelope. So I steamed it open for him so we wouldnt have to tear it.

The hubby is concerned about what other hidden skills I might have ;)

So - what crazy things have YOU done for your kids?

But I have a younger sister whom I drove 6 hours roundtrip in one day to get to a concert she was dying to see in Northern Va.

She'd asked me months earlier to take her and thinking there was no way in heck my mom would let her go, I agreed (our mother would have never let me go to a concert when I was Dsis's age -- she was 16 at the time -- and I was far better behaved and a better student :snooty:.) When the concert came around, I was screwed, but I'd made a promise so I had to keep it!

I drove 1 hour to my parents house at 9pm to retrieve my DS's missing blankies. Something I promised myself I would NEVER do. Its amazing how desperate you are to get them to sleep. He was still awake and crying for his blankies when I got home.

I iron my boys' boxers because they don't like it when they're "scrunchy". I also try to put their jackets in the dryer before we go out in the winter so that they're nice and toasty. My friends think I'm crazy, but I've waited my whole life to be a mom and feel so blessed that I am!

I made the crazy mickey head tie dye shirts in the picture below. Lots of work but totally worth it. I also made a palm tree out of an 8 foot tall cardboard tube and an old umbrella for one of the kids events at school. It now lives in the 4th grade classroom and my son is terribly proud of it!

I always get suckered into stuff like this. The other day I drove over to my aunt's house at 9pm in my jammies in the bitter cold because Lily reminded me while I was putting her to bed that she had gym the next day and her tennis shoes were over there. "Mom, we won't be allowed to do climbing wall if we don't wear tennis shoes. :sad1:" I know she could have learned a good lesson about keeping track of her things if she'd had to sit out. But I couldn't do it. :upsidedow She was just so sweetly, sadly sincere, and not at all bratty about it. :confused3

I sat through a Backstreet Boys concert for my younger sister. My ears nearly bled from all the pre-pubescent girls screaming, lol.

You win! :worship:

Luckily, Dsis was meeting up with one of our cousins so I didn't have to actually attend the show (it was Kanye West btw, and I am not a fan, but the two of them were! She could scarcely talk by the end of the night from screaming and our Dcousin17, a boy, cried during the performance -- not that there's anything wrong with that ;).)

no to what?

I don't do any of that. DD is 11 and I have a DM who is 76 who actually is worse about trying to get me to do stuff.

I am not going out in the middle of the night for jack. But they do try: go out at night after you are all snug or it is crappy weather and get me a snack? NOPE.

Personal choice I guess. My DS isnt spoiled but if steaming open his envelope makes him so very happy and doesnt take me a long time I will do it.

I forgot to add -- what sweet, thoughtful little boy you have that he wanted to keep the thank you intact! My mom would have just rolled her eyes if I said I didn't want to tear the envelope. :) He treasured the note and you didn't belittle his feelings. You are very good to him. :thumbsup2

Those are AMAZING!!! My kids love tie dye but I've never attempted it. I'd love to be able to do a Mickey head one. Great job!!

I must have been thinking about this thread when I was asleep last night, because I woke up thinking about a story my mom told me a long time ago.

Back in the 80s when my DSis was a little girl, Ohio had a Sea World that was about 2 hours away from where we live in Columbus. DSis' 3rd grade class had a field trip there and my mom was a chaperone. As usual with this type of trip, the kids were to bring their own sack lunch for the day. There was a little Asian boy in DSis' class whose parents didn't speak any English, and I guess the dad realized the boy had left his lunch in the car when he dropped him off at school, because he drove the boy's forgotten lunch all the way up to Sea World for him (4 hours round trip)!! My mom was thinking OF COURSE someone would have gotten him something to eat! For some reason, that story always stuck with me, I think it's so sweet.

My son turns 3 on Sunday and he is so sweet and really never asks for much (as opposed to his older sister, who wants everything she sees! :lmao: ). But one thing he really loves are superhero capes. He got a couple pairs of pajamas last year that had detachable capes and every night, he wants to wear those. Of course, he's outgrown the pajamas and I can't find new ones, so I decided to make my own capes. This has grown into a much bigger project than I anticipated.

First I bought basic t-shirts, boxers (so he could have basic sets to wear whenever), and material to cut the capes out of. Then I thought the t-shirts were too plain so I went out looking for iron-on patches. When I cut the capes out of the material, they looked so plain, so I cut out big Ps to glue on. (I don't sew). Last night was the finishing touch, gluing on the velcro strips with the special, high-inducing glue.

Did I mention I decided to make 10 capes so he'll never be without? This works out to 40 little pieces of velcro that needed to be applied and held onto long enough for them to adhere to the fabric and make a permanent bond.

A lot of trouble, but he is so sweet and he deserves it. And I guess I take a little pride in creating them for him, even though they are by no means professional looking or anything. I think I'm more excited for him to open his presents on his birthday than he is!

My DD5's shoe buckle broke right before we were suppose to go on the Disney cruise. So, I managed to get a sewing kit from AK Lodge Conceirge--there I was on the bus sewing my DD's leather shoe (you need shoes to get on the boat). I've never sewed a shoe before, but it held up quite well for that week and beyond. I'm known as "The Fixer" around here...

2 AM going to any 24 hour store we could find to find THE pacifier. She was attached to the one she got from the hospital. We probably spent $100 on pacifiers that night trying to find one that she would take. The next day she had 10 extras on hand from the hospital nusery (the nurses couldn't stand MY bawling my eyes out the next day on the phone, begging for pacifiers).

Well I remember this happening and my mom like to tell me the story. We went to the drive in theater when I was 4 and I loved my Grover doll, well I guess I had taken him with us and dropped him somewhere and refused to go to sleep at home untill I had him again. I was crying and such, my dad drove back to the drive in and searched int he dark for the Grover he found in the van once he was back home!

One time I did drive across the city to the only 24hr drug store to get drops to help settle DS gas... poor kid!
