The Crazy Life of a New Floridian & Ongoing TRs

Will someone please tell me why I scrubbed my floors today? The inlaws showed up and for some unknown reason they keep taking their stupid little dog out the FRONT door!!! So my foyer is all tracked up now. AARRGGHH!!! If it weren't for the fact that they're taking Ally with them, I'd be ready for them to leave already!!!

OK, vent over. Back to our regular scheduled programming....

The in-laws have arrived? You know what time it is, don't you?

Good grief - I think I'm going to be way behind - come over here to find my 4 day old post is the last one. Missy - what is up with that? I want to hear more about your visitors. popcorn:: And what is the creature of the day... skank, snake, scorpion, skunk, salamander, sot... :rolleyes1 :confused3 :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2:

OK, I'll try to post about the latest visitors.... (queue danger music...) the inlaws!!! We had an adventure (of course, would you expect anything else?), including a trip to the ER with FIL. Oh, and another Mr NoShoulders and a skanky skink. It just gets better and better.....

Let me get caught up at work and go holler at the dudes working on the back porch. I sent a really nasty email to our contractor telling him my grill was going to be out of warranty before it's even installed!!! :rotfl2: But guess what? They're here working today! This 4-6 week project on pavered patio, screen enclosure, and summer kitchen, is now in its 9th week, with no end in sight. They still have AT LEAST another week on the kitchen....

Hello Kara,

Enjoyed read Floridian New Life report, I can totally relate. My husband thinks we moved to paradise. Golfs a few times a week loves it. He golfing at Oakleaf this morning. I told him to watch out for flying monkeys. He has told me of all the lovely animals there in the past and said he would never go after a lost ball. They might eat you alive. I have had a hard time adjusting here. It is very pretty but I dont care for any of the stores. The only mall I can drive too is Orange Park Mall. Everytime I try to go somewhere not on Fleming Island or off of Blandind . I get lost. Really lost in the boonies where I think nobody will find me because there are no street signs. I figure I can tell my husband I am on a dirt road in the middle of the woods with cows all around. Im sure he"ll find me. LOL :rotfl2:
I moved too Fleming Island 2 years ago. Feels like yesterday and sometimes it feels FOREVER :scared: I am from Long Island NY. I think my development is very nice. but whenever I leave it, this is the boringest (is that a word)in the world. You know SR 17 what a happening place that is. OOH but we got a new Public's last week. That was the highlight of my week going to the new Publics. Life has gotten so boring here for me Walmart , Target and Kohl's I go there a million times a week.
We a disgusting cricket or something the got in the house the other day . When my son told me I thought it was one of their toy bugs. It was the size of my HAND.AAGGGH. I tried not to throw up and put a tupperware container on top and weighted it with about 20 pounds of books . I waited for my husband to get home and could hear it in the container.:scared1: Anyway I get the whole bugs things Florida grow s them big. I have never seen such big bugs in my life. Or hairy spiders, or HUGE spiders, poisonous spiders. Snakes, dragonflies by the millions, armadillos, vultures, Oh I could go on. In NY bugs were small and never a problem. Im still getting used to it.
Anyway it nice to know I not the only here bored in the stixs LOL:rolleyes1
Take care

Hello Kara,

Wow! I could probably hear him tee off on the 4th hole!!! We live in Eagle Landing, which is the golf course in Oakleaf. Small world!

I told him to watch out for flying monkeys. He has told me of all the lovely animals there in the past and said he would never go after a lost ball. They might eat you alive.

There is also a 7 ft gator that lives on the 7th hole!

I have had a hard time adjusting here. It is very pretty but I dont care for any of the stores. The only mall I can drive too is Orange Park Mall.

I HATE Orange Park mall! It's scary! :scared1: Have you been to the Avenues yet? It's a bit of a drive, but a nicer mall. How about St Johns Town Center? It's great for "window shopping" - you know, a Rolex store, etc...

Everytime I try to go somewhere not on Fleming Island or off of Blandind . I get lost. Really lost in the boonies where I think nobody will find me because there are no street signs. I moved too Fleming Island 2 years ago.

We looked at several communities on Fleming Island but it would have been over an hour commute for Jeff - nearly 1/2 hour just to get to I-295 in rush hour!

Feels like yesterday and sometimes it feels FOREVER :scared: I am from Long Island NY. I'm the same way with the bugs!!! They totally creep me out. Even if they're small (and I'm not sure this is such a thing in Florida!) I step on it and then take my foot out of my shoe, making sure to leave the shoe covering the spider. Jeff gets so mad at me when I do that!

Anyway I get the whole bugs things Florida grow s them big. I have never seen such big bugs in my life. Or hairy spiders, or HUGE spiders, poisonous spiders. All in all, I do like Jacksonville. I think it's a pretty city, I still like driving over the Buckman Bridge and seeing the city in the distance. But it's still all new to me. If it weren't for the Florida "wildlife" I really think I'd like it here. Everyone says "you'll get used to it." Hmmmm, not so sure. I'm afraid to work out in the yard - which is something I love to do! I take a shovel and smack all the bushes before I go near them, for fear of my friend Mr NoShoulders. And I'm terrified that Bucky is going to tangle with a snake at some point. I just hope his first time is with a black snake, and it bites him, so he'll be afraid of any other snake in the future. Cause I know they're not all as "friendly" as the black snake.

Maybe that's why I've never liked working in the yard? :lmao: I grew up in Jacksonville and am terrified of frogs and pretty scared of lizards and other creepy-crawlies! Seriously, about 5 years ago I got a lizard in my apartment and called every member of my family in tears for help! I guess I assumed everyone had it just as bad around the world! Right now I seem to be a magnet for thrips - these microscopic bugs that swarm and land all over you in dozens! It is so nasty! I'm itching right now thinking about them!

Shane&JakesMom - be careful in Orange Park! I've been hearing bad stories about carjackings! Go across the bridge to the Avenues. It has much better stores! I'd suggest Town Center too, but not now - too hot to be outside!

Hi, Jax

I am scared to go to Orange Park Mall myself. Supposedly there are going to build a movie theater here on Fleming Island , do not know when. Thank You for I have been to the Avenues and St Johns town center but am afraid to go with just me and kids. Scared I will get lost. And yes it is hot today. I dont even want to take my kids to the pool today. Thank you for the OP mall advice.

Hey Kara,

I love the buckman too. It is really beautiful.
We live at Fleming Island Plantation it is a little far to 295. Especially during rush hour. Down by you, there are much better stores like bed and bath
and your town center is really nice. Here they are still working on it. Since I moved here a lot of stores have opened. Mostly fast food places. I am still waiting for a GAP, children's place, a book store maybe? A bed and bath or perhaps a crate and barrel or pier one imports. I know pier one is past 295 on blanding right? Oh yeah hoping we get a chuck e chesse or something like here on FI.:worship:

So as Ally runs up to me basically asking me to call a seagull for her, I look off and see Jeff about to fall over he is laughing so hard.

See, a few months ago, when we were still very new to FL, we saw a bunch of seagulls hanging out in a parking lot. I told Ally they were having a meeting. When she asked me how I knew that, I told her that I took "seagull" as a second language when I was her age.

Now don't tell me that y'all didn't have kids so that you could tease the heck out of them!!!! It's just too much fun!

So we continued with that for awhile, comparing my "seagull" classes to her German classes in school.

I told her that daddy took "cow" in his school, so to see the look on his face when he walked in the door from work, only to have his beloved daughter ask him, "Daddy, how do you say 'hello' in cow?" :rotfl2: He thought about it for a minute, with a smirk on his face, and came out with the best cow sound you could imagine.

When Ally tried to imitate him, he "corrected" her!!!! :lmao:

So it was only fair that he get me back.

Now how to explain to her that I couldn't get a seagull to land on my arm?

Aha!

"Ally, seagulls can't hear very well because their ears are very small. That's why they make such loud noises - so their friends can hear them. So we'll have to wait until one gets REALLY close for Mommy to talk to them."

This poor child. She's going to be the laughing stock of her friends at prom when she tries to speak to them in seagull! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Anyway, luckily no seagulls came close enough to hear me... cause they have small ears ya know!!!! But we got some great pics of sunset...

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

I wanted to go through Gainesville this time to visit the home of our arch nemesis from two years ago. I figured of all the Florida colleges, this is the one I'd like to see Ally attend (even though Jeff and I have a very hard time seeing her in ANY FL school).
No, no, no! :headache: SEC yes, UF or LSU no!

We have it narrowed down to Michigan, although it's too far away, too cold, and we'd have to root against our daughters school if they played OSU!), but it's beautiful up there. Also on our short list are Georgia, Tennessee, Clemson (especially since we've moved further away), and maybe Auburn or Bama. But after seeing U of F, I guess we could stomach it, if we have to!!! :rotfl2:
You'd let your daughter go to Michigan?! :scared1: I've never been there and I'm sure it's lovely, but you went to OSU. I personally think Tennessee is a wonderful choice. Go Vols! You'll never get tired of hearing Rocky Top! :cool2:

Actually she took german in SC. They changed the language every 4 or 5 years but once the kids started a language they kept it twice a week until middle school where they were then offered a choice. I think they started German a couple of years before Ally started school, partly because BMW had a plant there so it could definitely come in handy. She was doing so well and I was very upset to learn that there were no languages offered in her new elementary school. I've considered private foreign language, but it was just so convenient to have it offered in school. After one year she could count to 20, and knew all the family words, plus all her colors, and basic words like chair, table, pencil, etc. I don't know when they start conjugating verbs though. I really need to look into lessons down here.

That's great! I think we should all know at least two languages.

The in-laws have arrived? You know what time it is, don't you?

No, no, no! :headache: SEC yes, UF or LSU no!

The only reason I say "yes" to Florida, is that I know it's a top ranked school nationally. And if Ally gets a scholarship in Seagull......:lmao:

Actually, none of us went to OSU, but if you live in the state of Ohio, you're a Buckeye! I went to Miami of Ohio and Jeff went to Bowling Green. Personally, I wouldn't want Ally to go to Ohio State. It's a dump!!! Right outside downtown Columbus, it's pretty rough. They have great graduate programs though. But basically anyone with a pulse can get in as an undergrad! :rotfl2: As for Michigan, it's a beautiful school. And it could be my second favorite team.... :rolleyes1

That's great! I think we should all know at least two languages.

:rotfl2:

Well, I guess that's three languages, including SEagull!

Fleming Island Plantation is beautiful. WE looked out there but it was just too far for Jeff to drive. And when we moved we didn't know where I'd be working, who knew I'd be able to work from home???

I wish we had more restaurants over here. We have been limited to Gators, Chili's, McD's and our clubhouse restaurant but now there are a few more that have opened - 5 Guys, Moe's, Chick Fil-A, Panda Express, and we have Up the Creek coming plus Longhorns and a Japanese Steakhouse...

THRIPS??? Great! Something else to look forward to!!! There have been several skink sightings lately, including yesterday - Bucky found one on the back porch and raced toward it. I grabbed his tail and was reeling him back - and that's not easy with a 60 lb dog! I think the little guy found his way back outside, because I saw another one last night while I was planting my new bushes. Actually, I didn't even flinch when I saw this one. Maybe I really am getting used to them????

Yep, I try to avoid Orange Park, too. Even though technically we're in OP, we're closer to Middleburg, which is an experience unto itself! :scared1: Just kidding Middleburgers!!!! Middleburgers! :rotfl2:

Luckily, I do a ton of shopping online, and we have a Kohl's and Beall's right by us, so I'm pretty set for Ally's school shopping. I just hate going to any mall, I've been that way for awhile. We lived about 5 minutes away from a mall in Spartanburg, SC, and I went maybe 3 or 4 times a year. And that was just for Yankee Cancle and Bath and Body Works!

OK, so on with the daily life report of a new Floridian.

What I am about to write may frighten small children, so I’ll pause so they can be sent to another room.

Doobie, doobie dooooo……

OK, safe now? On with the report!

On Friday, August 1, all you know what broke loose about 2pm. Jeff had just come home from the grocery store, and I hear him outside talking to – da da DAAAAA – HIS PARENTS!!! No, not on the phone – they were here for the weekend! :scared1:

Now in all honesty, I do get along well with his parents. They just drive me insane with some of the absolutely, well for lack of a better word, STUPID things they do!

The first thing I notice when they get out of the car (my office is at the front of the house so I can see everything that goes on – feeds my voyeuristic side!) is that my FIL is limping. Badly. Well, I don’t want to hear their latest drama, so as they come in and walk by my office, I pick up my phone and pretend to be on a business call. Yes. I really did this. I’m a terrible DIL, I know!

But you don’t understand the whole molehills into mountains things these people can conjure! When MIL had a hysterectomy several years ago, you’d have thought it was experimental surgery, and that she was the first woman to EVER have this done! Everyone had to go stay with her in the hospital, and she cried and cried because she was no longer a woman, yada yada yada. I just don’t have the patience for that I guess. Get it done and move on already!

Then when she got laid off from her job, again, she was the only person that had ever been laid off. No offense, she did not have a great job, it was just a little supplemental income, but she was devastated. And don’t even let me tell you about the time their dog died!!! Oy vey!

So finally I decide to go greet them. First thing FIL tells me is that he has a bad sciatic nerve. AT least that’s what he has self-diagnosed, with the help of all his golf buddies. So he’s gimping around the house, moaning and groaning. Yeah, this is gonna be a fun weekend.

On Saturday morning he can’t even sit down, stand up, whatever. He was up at 6am taking a walk through the neighborhood to try to stretch it out. I finally told him needed to go to an urgent care place to get some relief. And make sure it’s just his sciatic nerve. Because you don’t want to mess around with anything that runs through your spine. Especially my FIL.

See, nine years ago my FIL had a run in with a garbage can, and the garbage can won. To the tune of a neurosurgeon proclaiming that his x-rays showed a man who should be dead!

It was right before Hurricane Floyd was to come ashore and bring a lot of severe storms to the upstate of SC, so FIL was outside rinsing out the big garbage can before bringing it into the garage. That’s how inland people prepare for a hurricane, I guess.

They have a small hill in their backyard, so he filled the can with water, swished it around and was running it down the hill to dump it out. At least that was the plan.

As he ran behind the can, the lid was hanging down in front of him. Apparently, his foot caught on the lid, brought the can to a dead stop and he went flying INTO the garbage can, banging his head on the side on the way in.

MIL came outside to find him laying INSIDE the garbage can, on the ground, and started yelling at him to stop messing around. When he told her he couldn’t feel his arms or legs, she panicked, but instead of calling 911 she called me. And told me that he was having a stroke. I told her we’d come over the minute Jeff walked in the door, which was less than 2 minutes later.

In the meantime, she calls the neighbors, one is a nurse the other used to be a paramedic. Again, she tells them he’s having a stroke. So they pull him out of the garbage can. Then the neighbors call 911.
9.gif
The medics get there, finally strap him to a backboard, but because MIL kept telling everyone he was having a stroke, I don’t think they took steps for a neck injury. Again, she freaks out and assumes the worst. Or so she thought.

Come to find out, when FIL’s head hit the side of the can, it bent his neck “as far as possible without snapping it,” according to the neurosurgeon. They ended up fusing 4 vertebrae together, and he was in a neck brace for months. He still has a lot of nerve damage and constant pain in his fingers and legs. So it definitely caused irreversible damage.
Of course, he was nicknamed Oscar the Grouch for awhile and it was a big joke, cause, I mean, the man fell in a garbage can!!!

But when MIL tells the story, she tells everyone he broke his neck. For effect, I guess. She wants the drama, she’s not happy unless there is something bad happening. Seriously.

Kinda like the way I write this report!!! :rotfl2:

So, now that I’ve made this short story LONG, let me just say that Jeff drove his parents to an Urgent Care, they wrote him a prescription for a muscle relaxant and pain meds (I made sure they took along all his current prescriptions!) and sent him for an ultrasound to make sure there wasn’t a blood clot.

Oh, now the drama AGAIN!

He’s got a blood clot, you know what happens with blood clots in legs, oy vey!!! Jeff said he about killed his mother sitting there in the waiting room. He basically had to tell her to STOP with the hysterics and drama and if there is a clot, at least you know now and they can break it up.

Luckily, no clot, just severe sciatica. More meds, and out the door.
So FIL asks me to check online for how to treat it. Excuse me, didn’t you just see a doctor? So I come back and tell him that it could be caused by a herniated disc. And it happens most frequently to people who lead a sedentary lifestyle. He doesn’t believe me.

Until he gets home and his doctor basically echoes what I have told him. Now I may not be a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express recently. Not really. But I did play one on TV. Yeah, not so much. But I did read it on WebMD and that’s about the same, right?

Now they were planning to take Ally back to SC with them, but they couldn’t leave on Friday because FIL was still too fidgety to ride 6 hours in a car. They decided to leave Monday morning.

Ally asked him, “PapPap, are you gonna say ‘oh, ah, ouch’ the whole way home? Cause if you do, I’m not going.” :lmao:

He assured her he wouldn’t, and off they went about 8:15 Monday morning. With my baby in the back. Her first trip away from me.

I expect them to get home around 3, since they’ll be taking it easy with MIL doing all the driving, and Ally in the back wanting to stop every hour to use the restroom. Instead, they call at 1:45 to say they’re home.

It’s a 6 hour trip with two short stops. Period. And that’s going 5-10 miles above the speed limit the whole way. They somehow made the trip in 5 ½ hours. I told Jeff he WILL talk to his mother about her driving. She had to be flying!!! And she’s really scatterbrained as it is, I’ve ridden with her!!!

So now I’m getting excited about Ally coming home tomorrow. I’ve gotten a fair amount of yard work done this week though, and the house has stayed pretty clean. But I miss her terribly!

Jeff and I are going to meet them “half way” tomorrow to pick up Ally. Of course “half way” for them, is about 3 ½-4 hrs for us, and 2 ½ hrs for them. Why we let them choose the exit I’ll never know….

What an eventful weekend! That accident with your FIL sounded pretty scary, but I have to admit I did laugh at the mental picture of a man falling into a garbage can! Sorry! I can't believe your MIL didn't call 911 right away!

Wow - that's a big step to have Ally go out of town without you! I haven't spent a night away from my DD. But my parents have been wanting her to spend the night at their house for a while without me or DH. I know they raised me just fine, but I still hate to be away from DD even for 1 night!

Have a fun trip to your "halfway" point! :lmao:

Is your DD still just 1? You have plenty of time for sleepovers!!! I didn't leave Ally with a sitter until she was 9 months old. And then we went to Jamaica for a week when she was 4 - otherwise, she has only spent one or 2 nights at a time with the grandparents. This was weird because we were just hanging around the house without her!

My MIL NEVER calls 911! She said the reason she was most upset about us moving away (we only lived about 15 minutes away in SC) is that she relies on Jeff when his dad gets sick. In Feb of 2007, MIL had to drive FIL to the ER in the middle of the night because he couldn't breathe. I mean, WTH??? Call 911 for crying out loud! Jeff got so mad at her! And then she drove him to the local women's hospital, which has just recently become a general hospital for everyone, because it's the only one she knew how to find - she's only lived there for 12 years!!!!

Turns out FIL was basically drowning because his lungs were so full of fluid. He wouldn't go to the doctor when this "chest cold" wouldn't go away. And it got so bad, they admitted him for a week, and he was diagnosed with COPD - plus he has smoked for 40 years.

Wait, it gets better - MIL was telling everyone that he'll be on an oxygen tank for the rest of his life, etc. So here we are expecting the worst. Nope. Nothing major. He takes an inhaler twice a day. And he has to be careful when he gets a cold so it doesn't turn into pneumonia. But that's it. No oxygen tank. I swear, she over dramatizes EVERYTHING!!! And that time he seriously could have died with her driving him.

Oh, and another reason they didn't go to the #1 hospital in the area, that specializes in heart related illnesses. Ready for this? It was Sunday night and it's in a bad part of town (like most hospitals, it seems!) and they didn't want to get shot. Seriously!

I told them that patients only get shot on Friday night and Saturday night, but that Sunday night the gangsters are all recovering from the weekend! :rotfl2: As you can tell, I don't have much patience!

Yes, my DD is still only 1. But it really is going by too fast! Aahh...it seems like yesterday that she was just a tiny little newborn! :lovestruc

A women's hospital! :rotfl: That's pretty crazy! Is Jeff a doctor or something?

No Jeff is not a doctor. Maybe they know that he stays at the HOliday Inn Express too! :rotfl2: His mom just freaks out! I seriously worry about Ally when she is with them, cause she always says, "don't worry, we would call you if anything ever happened." We're like - HELLO!!! Call 911 first and then call us.

I know what you mean about the time going too fast. My mom always told me, "you think it's going fast now? wait until you have kids!" Boy, was she ever right! Don't tell her I said that though. :rotfl:

OK, since others have admitted it, I can admit it too -- I chuckled when I read the story about FIL and the garbage can!:lmao:
