The Crazy Life of a New Floridian & Ongoing TRs

OK, so now I'm beginning to stress about what to do with Ally when we go to Disney in September!

Since we're new to FL, we don't know a whole bunch of people. I have great neighbors, one has two boys ages kindergarten and third grade, and Ally will be in 2nd grade, so she'd probably be fine with them. In fact, I dream of Ally and the 3rd grader growing up together, going to prom together, he's such a sweet boy, and the famiy is great. The kids play together at least 2-3 times a week during the school year, walking home from the bus stop together, etc.

But I called my mom today to see if she wanted to come down to stay with Ally and that's a bad time for her. She's really involved in a theater group called Spotlight on Youth. They travel around to local schools and perform various plays geared to help kids with issues such as drugs, racism, violence, good touching vs bad touching, etc. It's an awesome program, geared to the various ages. And since September is so near the beginning of the school year, she is really busy booking the plays for the whole year. They travel up to 2 hrs away to do this.

So that leaves my in-laws. Oy vey! If only I were Jewish I could use that expression more often! It's a great expression!

My in-laws would probably come down, but they will want to bring their dog (which they always do!) and the little mutt is afraid of Bucky, so I'm afraid that they'd leave Bucky locked in our bedroom so their little princess could run around. Seriously, I won't take Bucky when we go to visit them anymore because my FIL gets so upset that their dog hides from Buck. Even though she comes out and plays with him, once she's had enough she hides. He feels bad for her. C'mon! She's a dog! They play, that's what dogs do!!!

Get this, they found this dog at the golf course where they live. They never called the pound, they never called local vets, they never put up fliers, to see if someone had lost this dog. It obviously belonged to a family with a young child because she instantly took to Ally. The only thing they did was put up 2 fliers in their neighborhood! Now they knew the dog didn't belong to anyone in there. It made me so mad that they never even tried to find the owners. I told Jeff that his parents basically "stole" this dog from some family. Seriously. If they wanted a dog, they could have gone to the pound and adopted one. Made me so mad. That's probably why I don't like the dog.

Then there is Ally's BFF who lives in our neighborhood, and quite frankly, I just don't like this little girl. I don't trust her. She's 7 and totally boy crazy. Plus, every time she comes over to play, something gets destroyed. And she tries to always be so grownup, like tattling on Ally for every little thing. Tries to be MY friend. I just get a bad vibe from her. So even though I know the parents would keep Ally while we're gone, I just don't like her with this girl for that long.

OK, rant over. But I still haven't solved my dilemma. Oy vey!

Hi Kara! I'm re-subscribing. I somehow clicked on unsubscribe. I don't think you should leave Ally with the neighbors - usually your gut is right.

Wow - I know I said this before, but it seems like Jeff's parents are the answer, even if it's not great for our dog for a few days. It would probably be still better than boarding the dog - at least he would be at home and Ally could play with him some.

I don't know how you put up with Malificent the way you did. I think we should call you Saint Kara! :flower3:

Oh, hardly a saint, Tammie! But I was just remembering a "saintly" moment from our trip with our friends last summer.

It was our last morning, waking up in our wonderful rented beach house, and I made coffee (of course Donald was up with the kids already!). Apparently when Maleficent woke up, she told Donald she wanted STRONG coffee (she complained every time I made it that week - so get your lazy butt out of bed and make it yourself!!! I thought that. I know I should have said it!). So Donald walked into the kitchen, took the pot of coffee I had made, and proceeded to dump it in the sink!!!

I looked at Jeff, totally dumb struck! WTH??? And Donald just looked at me and said, "Maleficent isn't feeling well. She's requested STRONG coffee."

So, I guess we'll ALL have strong cofffee now, huh? Seriously. I question my own sanity sometimes.

But I did have my halo on that morning, because I really wanted to scream!!!

Kara - I would GLADLY watch Ally while you're away. Don't have to pay me one cent - just cover my airfare!;) (and bring me back a Citron Slushie!)

For starters, it will just be me and my DH Jeff spending 4 days in the World for our 10th anniversary, celebrated 11 years after we were married. :confused3 I know, I know, but Jeff got transferred to Jacksonville, FL, last summer and we were right in the midst of the house hunt, and finally moving, during our actual anniversary in October, so we decided that we’d wait a year to actually celebrate that milestone. And then when free dining came up, we decided to up our anniversary a month! So in all actuality, this will be our 10 year, 11 month anniversary! Yea!

We will be married 11 years this October too. :cake:

Now let me also say that I’ve had a really hard time moving to Florida. I left a wonderful life in South Carolina, where we spent the last 14 years. We’re both originally from Ohio
ohio_state_univ.png
but we fell in love with the easy southern lifestyle and South Carolina is a beautiful place to live! So even though I'm a new Floridian, you'll find me saying "y'all" and "bless her heart" and "kiss my grits" (okay, not really that one!). They really do have smiling faces, and beautiful places!
The reason you don't like Florida is that you didn't move to Florida, you just moved further south. Jacksonville isn't Florida. :rolleyes1

My parents called me this winter to ask me if I had seen their blizzard on TV - I told them (from my laundry room bunker!) that they needed to turn on the Weather Channel because there was nothing about a blizzard on there - it was all about the deadly storms ripping across Florida! Yeah, that's a near daily occurrence here in the summer.
You'll smile at the blizzards soon enough. It's a sick thrill we get here. ;)

Poor little Bella, about a week before we had to have her put down. I still miss my little girl!

How cute!

It was a little dicey grabbing those ADRs because I called about 90 days out, so I just adjusted my times a bit and all was well. Well, almost! I really want to eat at Rose & Crown but Jeff is so NOT into English cuisine. His response? “What great cuisine have the English come up with? Boiled meat? Kidney pie?” And even though I’ve heard great things about the fish and chips here, Jeff likes getting the most bang for his buck on the Dining Plan! Which is why I will never get him to Sci Fi for burgers when Disney is paying for our meal! Out of pocket? Maybe someday…. So as I battle him for Rose & Crown, I just make the decision to go for it! What’s the worst that can happen?
You should try R & C at least. The fish and chips are really good. Although others don't share that opinion, so decide for yourself. And if you time it right, Illuminations is great viewed from there.:thumbsup2

So when I was getting my hair cut on Saturday
1.gif

I made the mistake of asking my stylist if she could recommend a local beach. Now she’s a great gal who gives a great cut (yeah, I’m growing it out so she literally only cut the length off the back - $40 please, thank you very much!) but she’s, how can I say this, er, um, for lack of a better term, white trash. I don’t think I’d ask her to recommend anywhere for a romantic anniversary dinner, cause I’ve already been to Golden Corral, but again, she’s a good girl, just a little rough around the edges. But back when DD had lice, she is the one who discovered it – oh, horror of horrors – and she was sweet as can be about it, giving me the low down on how to treat it, etc. I also found out that lice are a HUGE problem in Florida! Yippee!

See, you're in the south, not Florida. ;) I grew up in Memphis so I know these things. We've been in Orlando 3 years. Love it! :thumbsup2

Keep in mind that Florida is one big swamp, and I'm not talking the Gators football field. As a diehard Buckeye I try not to think of that. Or LSU. Or any other SEC football debacle. But that's another story.

My mother went to Ohio State and you'd think she's learn not to bet me against the SEC. :sad2: DH went to Ole Miss and I went to Tennessee. UF is the worst part of living in Florida.

And it’s not the first time I’ve pulled out the winter snow boots in Florida.
I really don't have any winter clothes anymore. That way I can stay here in the winter. :rolleyes1

Because apparently Fred was pining for Bucky, and waiting for him right out the front door.

Ready to run in the house the minute I opened the door. At 10:00 at night. Last night.

In the house, and up the wall. A 10 foot wall. But first behind the very large, and very heavy mirror. On the 10 foot wall. In the house. My house.

We have cats to handle this situation. :cat:

But no, there are no snakes in Disney (except for Mann's Chinese Theater), and no bugs either. Cause Disney knows how to use pesticide!

Lizards get rid of bugs! :rolleyes1

Oy vey! If only I were Jewish I could use that expression more often! It's a great expression!

I'm not Jewish either yet I use that expression frequently. It just seems to say exactly what you mean.

Why is it that no matter what time you plan to get out of the house for vacation, or just a little weekend getaway, it just ain't happening??? :confused3

I told Jeff that I wanted to leave on Friday at 2:40, because the kennel didn't open until 3pm - I wanted to get there right at 3 and get on the road. So he strolls in the house around 3:30, with the phone plastered to his ear.

I swear, I wanna throw that thing out in the woods. Or a lake. Or a mud pit. And then watch him rush in after it. Now I could be tossed in the mud pit and he wouldn't rush in after me, but that's probably because he'd be too busy on his phone!!! That he just rescued from the mud pit. Anywho....

We finally pull out of the driveway right at 3pm. And that's only because I was throwing the stuff in the trunk of his car.... while he moseyed around the front yard on the phone!!! Finally, I just locked the front door, put the dog in the car, and Ally (although if SHE would have taken much longer, she would have been left behind!!!), and told him to get in NOW!

He didn't even get to change clothes, so he made the drive in his dress pants and shirt. Too bad. He knew the plan....

So the beginning of our relaxing beach weekend was turning into anything but. Although he was being a butt, but that's beside the point.

So we drop Bucky off at the kennel, which is right on the way. And the way, I might add, is anything but the way we'd have figured the way to be. If you get my point.

The way does not include any interstate until we're halfway there!

And the first thing I do is give Jeff wrong directions after we leave the kennel. Ooops, my bad! :rotfl: Stupid Google maps - that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Actually, this was a very enjoyable route to take. We drove through Waldo - so I can actually now answer the age old question, Where's Waldo? But I'd still probably get it wrong cause all I know is that it is somewhere between here and there. :rolleyes1 Then we rolled through the booming metropolis of Starke. Along the way we saw the latest in landscape design. Because Jeff was cruising along and wouldn't stop for me to take a picture, you'll have to imagine this in your mind.... A split rail fence, quite old and faded. On top of each post is something from the garage that the family obviously didn't need anymore, but for some reason known only to this family, they chose not to throw it out. Instead, on top of each post was an old push mower, a stroller, a weed wacker, a lawn chair, a washing machine, use your imagination for the rest. There must have been at least 30 different "decorations" adorning this fence.

I swear y'all. I'm not making it up. Cause seriously, how could I think up something like that?

The neatest part about this drive, was driving just north of Ocala. Who knew that Florida had "horse country?" Not I, that's for sure. But it was a beautiful drive, passing lots of horse farms, and sprawling pastures. It really was very Kentuckyish. And the funny thing is that it even got very hilly. Yes, in Florida! I swear! The roads actually had hilltops and valleys. Crazy, I know!

If you've ever driven in Florida you know that you could probably fall asleep at the wheel and still be on the same road, in your same lane, 10 miles later! So this was quite a shock. But very nice.

Once we went through Ocala, it was onto I-75 for another 80 miles or so.....

Right as we entered Tampa, the skies darkened, the lightning was shooting down in bolts, and all I know is that we have a 10 mile causeway to go over. I'm terrified of bridges anyway. I know, I know!!!! But I do! So I'm scared to death that it's gonna be storming, the winds will pick up our car and dump it right over the side. Cause it COULD happen!

Luckily, the storm passed by the time we got to the , um, er, causeway. That turned out to be a flat road over Tampa Bay. Yes, there was water on each side, but it wasn't a true "bridge." After fighting the traffic getting to the beach, we finally checked into our hotel around 7:15 Friday night.

Let me just say that the Hilton in Clearwater Beach didn't look like much from the outside. But the staff was incredible. I wanted to tell them to head about an hour west and apply with the fine folks at WDW!!! Seriously, great customer service.

While Jeff was checking us in, using his Hilton Honors points for a FREE weekend stay, Ally and I were approached by a valet who started chatting up Ally. Turns out our new friend Suat (pronounced swat) was from Turkey and promised to bring Ally a real turkish coin the next day! Seriously nice guy. Just wanted to make a little girl happy.

After what seemed like an hour waiting for Jeff, I finally grabbed our bags out of the car - just one suitcase for the three of us and a couple of bags of drinks, beach gear, and snacks. So while he parked the car, Ally and I ran up to check out our room.

It was very Ikea. The whole Scandinavian influence with the blonde wood, frosted glass, and lots of brushed chrome. I mean, it was nice, just not my cup of tea. But hey, it's a room, right? And this was the view thanks to Jeff's Diamond VIP status and a free upgrade!

2008_0727Bucky0029.jpg

Palm trees! I love palm trees - and these are my very favorite of all the palm tree varieties - who knew there were so many different kinds of palm trees? But I apparently have very "good" taste - I was told these sell for $250/foot! so you are looking at the tops of $50K trees - EACH!

2008_0727Bucky0030.jpg

No need to unpack here, after all it's only two nights. So while Jeff got changed for dinner, I began to contemplate this room. And compare it to a Disney room.

OK, so a lot of people marvel at how Disney can get away with charging $100/night for a "value" room. And really, it's little more than a room, right? But it's clean, it's cool, it's got great theming, and it provides transportation to the Disney parks, right?

Let's look at a "moderate" resort at Disney. They charge right around $200/night for a slightly larger room, a little more extensive theming, a nicer pool area, and Disney tranportation. Our room at the Hilton in Clearwater Beach runs $260-$400/night. It is no bigger than a moderate resort room. It did not have a water slide. So how is Disney wrong for charging $200/night for a moderate resort room?? :confused3

Jeff's argument is that at the Hilton, we were oceanfront. But I argued that at a Disney resort you are "Disneyfront" which is where you want to be at that time. If you want to be oceanfront, you go to the ocean, right? Nobody expects to be oceanfront at Disney. So the best you can be is "Disneyfront" which means you're on Disney property. And then I guess a Deluxe resort at $280+ per night really puts you "Disneyfront" since you're right outside the gates of the parks.

I totally justified paying for a deluxe resort after spending this weekend at the Hilton. Except that we weren't exactly PAYING for the Hilton. Hmmmm, I need to work on some more logic.....

Up next, "I'm glad Daddy doesn't have a swim suit like that!"

We will be married 11 years this October too. :cake:

The reason you don't like Florida is that you didn't move to Florida, you just moved further south. Jacksonville isn't Florida. :rolleyes1

You're absolutely right! We're basically in southern GA! And isn't it true that the rest of FL considers Jacksonville "Freakville?" It's crazy up here!

You'll smile at the blizzards soon enough. It's a sick thrill we get here. ;)

I already do! My folks are in OH so I've made fun of them for the last 15 years, ever since we moved away!

You should try R & C at least. The fish and chips are really good. Although others don't share that opinion, so decide for yourself. And if you time it right, Illuminations is great viewed from there.:thumbsup2

I have another DISbud who highly recommends it - I really wanted to try it but couldn't score the ADR! :sad1:

See, you're in the south, not Florida. ;) I grew up in Memphis so I know these things. We've been in Orlando 3 years. Love it! :thumbsup2

Jeff's cousin is in Orlando and they seem to really like it there - they moved from Charlotte. But the funny thing is that they would love to get transferred to Jacksonville? :confused3 He says it reminds him of Pittsburgh, with the river, I guess, and since he grew up outside Pittsburgh, I guess that's why they like it. But we've tried to explain to them that it's nothing like Pittsburgh!!!

My mother went to Ohio State and you'd think she's learn not to bet me against the SEC. :sad2: DH went to Ole Miss and I went to Tennessee. UF is the worst part of living in Florida.

Yea for you mom! Boo to you SEC fans! :rotfl: We just drove through Gainesville this weekend. I wanted to see where my arch nemesis hails from! :rotfl2:

Lizards get rid of bugs! :rolleyes1

Yeah, I know. But I still don't like them. And I hear that if you have lizards, you don't have snakes, although our contractor just saw a water mocassin in our yard! :scared1:

I'm not Jewish either yet I use that expression frequently. It just seems to say exactly what you mean.

Oy vey!!! Love it! Thanks for reading! I may call on your "expert" Florida analysis later!!!

:surfweb: :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:  :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:  :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

:thumbsup2

Loving it so far. Kara, you should be a writer!! I would read your books!! You are so funny! More, more!!!!

So once Jeff got changed and poo pooed my Disney room rate logic, we walked out on the beach and through the little boardwalk area there.

Interesting is the first word that comes to mind. I saw some interesting people, wearing interesting clothes with interesting logos and sayings. And if my daughter EVER dresses like that, before she's 40... or 65... , she's disowned!!!

I never could figure out Clearwater. There were very few chain hotels. I saw the Hilton, a Holiday Inn, and that's it on the beach. The rest were places like Bob and Suzy's No Tell Motel. Not my cup of tea. And the streets had quite a few beggars, which I just didn't expect here.

It wasn't like any "strip" in Myrtle Beach or Daytona. Just.... different.

So after we wandered, quickly I might add, through the boardwalk, we made our way to Crabby Bill's Seafood right across the street. The wait was 30-40 minutes and it was already 8:00. Oh, well, we were on a mini vacay so to heck with Ally's bedtime.

We grabbed our little coaster vibrator thingy and wandered out to the marina to look at the boats. So Jeff could point at each one and say, "That was kinda like the one I went out 40 miles on to go fishing."

"Really? That's way too small for me."
"Well, it's not really the same."

OK, now that we got that all cleared up.... :rolleyes1

I kept my eye to the sky as we wandered, because the sky was getting black and moving closer. So I took my family and moved US closer to the restuarant. Shortly after we wandered back in, our coaster vibrator thingy did it's thing, and we got seated at a huge picnic table that seats about 8, right outside, with a storm rolling in....

As much as I love weather, I'm really quite fascinated by it, I also respect it. And I wasn't liking the idea of sitting outside in a storm. Now "outside" was under a plastic tarp covering the ceiling, and the staff was beginning to lower the plastic tarps over the wall.

But storms and I don't battle well. Cause the storm will win. If it comes to that. I'm pretty obsessive. Remember my "bunker" between the washer and dryer at home? Well, Crabby Bill's doesn't provide me with that kind of safety, so I'm not liking this... Not at all.

But Ally is with us, so I can't get all panicky around her. So I hunker down, order a Landshark Lager, and tough it out.

Luckily, the storm died off somewhere before it got to us, and the only good thing was that when it did start raining it chased off the one man band that was soooo loud. I guess it could be because we were sitting right by the speaker. But once it began raining, he was gone, and we could actually eat in peace.

Our server somehow messed up our order, but I kept what she brought because it actually looked really good! A broiled fish platter, as opposed to the healthier grilled platter I ordered. Who needs healthy on a vacay weekend?

I know that Crabby Bill's is pretty much a tourist trap, but it was actually pretty tasty, and it was cute and "run down."

We headed back to the hotel shortly after dinner and all three crashed right about 10:30.

ONe thing that Hilton/Hampton Inn/Doubltree all have is the nice cushy beds. I love me a HIlton bed, almost as much as the Westin's Heavenly Bed. So I'm gonna sleep like a baby......

God, Jacksonville is not that bad! Blah, blah, blah - it's not FL, it's S GA. I've heard it a ton of times. Well, it's more FL than OH and TN, that's for sure. I'd take the weather and scenery here any day. And I'd take it over the urban sprawl that is Orlando. It's a nice place to vacation, but I don't want to deal with their traffic and astronomical real estate prices (among other things). I'm guessing that you live close to the Oakleaf area since you mentioned Old Jennings State Forest. I'd suggest spending more time in San Marco, Avondale, Southside, Ponte Vedra, and Amelia Island if you want a change of pace from the Jax Westside feel.

I just drove through Waldo this weekend too! Interesting place, huh? I bet you stopped into the flea market! :lmao: Yes, the area outside of Ocala is beautiful. You definitely feel like your in another part of the country. Oh, and I'm glad you got to make a stop past Titletown AKA Gainesville! :goodvibes

No, it really isn't THAT bad. But it isn't the FL that a lot of people think of - I guess whenever I think of FL, even I think of Miami, or southern Florida.

And you're right - with as inflated as home prices are here, I can't even imagine it the further south you go!!! I just watched, oh what is the name of that HGTV show where they show 3 different homes and then they pick one..... on the tip of my tongue.... anyway, a gal was looking in Naples for $1.5 mil and she only got 3000 sq feet!!!! Granted, she was only about a mile from the beach, but still!!!!

People in Jax do make fun of Orange Park, huh? But we've talked with so many people who don't even know that the whole Oakleaf area exists!!!!

And even though I joke about it, we do love where we live. Even with "Titletown" so near.... Please, spare me!!!! :rotfl2:

House Hunters, I think? I love watching those shows! They have a House Hunters International now.

I have family in the W Palm area and I can't believe the housing prices there! It was a nice neighborhood, but $300K for 1200sf is just too much to me!

I was there recently in Oakleaf and saw Moes and 5 Guys. Chick-Fil-A and Up The Creek look like they'll open soon too. I try to avoid Blanding Blvd at all cost - it scares me! :rotfl: Not really, but I don't like the traffic.

Are you stalking me??? :rotfl: I'm always up at the Town Center there!!! It's filling in pretty quickly, which tells me that they are expecting homes to start selling again too. Otherwise, you know these companies wouldn't be investing so much in a new area. Rumor has it a Super Walmart is going in on the corner of Chaffee and Oakleaf Plantation Blvd (Argyle). Holy traffic if that happens!!!!

5 guys just opened a couple of weeks ago, and I think Moes has been there for about a month. Up the Creek is new to me but it sounds nice. We're also getting a Japanese Steak house, supposedly a Longhorns, AND our own library.

Right now I pay $40/yr to use the Duval Co library system on Old Middleburg Rd. The nearest Clay County library is on Kingsley, too much hassle for me. I, too, avoid Blanding if at all possible....

I usually have my lime green mickey dangling from my bag - give me a holla if you see me!!!

Not another Super Walmart! Don't know if it's a Jax thing, but those always attract the most interesting characters.

You're sooo right! But I shop there, and you probably shop there, and most everyone we know shops there, right? So why do we never see people like ourselves there??? :confused3

That is truly a mystery.

I know! Just be sure never to go to the one on Normandy. A while back people kept disappearing from there!

I see I've got some catching up to do! :rotfl: You know that should come as a shocker since I'm always so caught up. :rolleyes1
