The Chicken Exit

Funny conversation at the breakfast table this morning.

DD - Mom, what were those exits for in the line for splash mountain?

Me - That's the chicken exit

DD - Oh, I thought they were for people

Me - (laughing) No. They are for people, when you get to scared and decide not to ride you are called a chicken, you chickened out, you used the chicken exit.

DD - (smiling and proclaiming loudly) I'M A CHICKEN!!!!!!

I am probably going to regret explaining that to her though.....should have just let her think they were for chickens.

My kids giggled everytime I used the aptly named chicken exit this last trip - every time they went on Splash and EE. Mom used to just estimate the time dh and the kids be gone on those rides and shop and arrange to meet them after. This trip, I waited in line with them and just used the chicken exit. They loved it - and they used the time to try to badger me into going on the ride. Didn't work. I happily paraded myself right through the chicken doors!

Just anticipating an upcoming question-

You may exit ANY attraction at WDW after walking through the queue,
without boarding and riding the attraction.

This goes for everything from Winnie the Pooh and Dumbo up to Space Mountain, Tower of Terror,
and Expedition Everest.

Just tell the "loading CM" that you decided not to ride.

It's no big deal at all.

The more involving/interesting queues at WDW are:

Pirates of the Caribbean
Tower of Terror
Rock'nRollercoaster
Expedition Everest
Its Tough to Be a Bug
Dinosaur
Test Track

Special note:
In Haunted Mansion, there is even a "Opt-Out" Exit, just after you leave the Streching Room.
On your right, you'll see a door with this sign. That's the exit.

BTW - The exits are not actually called "Chicken Exits" at the parks (we just do it for fun here.)

Thanks for the reminder Robo. And I also GAVE the CMs a smile and chuckle when we got to "chicken exit" spot and I specifically asked where the "chicken exit" is. They smiled and pointed the way. They knew exactly what I meant! I'd already seen the queue for EE because I'd rode it the year before (and thus decided that I would happily NOT ride it ever again after that), but it was still fun to see again!

DS used this exit A LOT last trip! This way we could all go through the line together and I didn't have to worry about him waiting outside by himself for a long period of time - he was only 10 at the time. Funny thing is.....DS6 rode EVERYTHING his little body was allowed to (he's SO short) while the oldest wouldn't even ride Test Track!! Funny how 2 kids from the same parents can be polar opposites!

Last year I had to use the Chicken Exit at Splash mountain as my DD was scared, after the que. She hates dark scary type things (AK's Bug Life show was the WORST!!!). She was crying as we were about to board.

that said, fast forward a few months, and after watching videos online of it, she's decided she really wants to get on now. Our DS3 is about 40" now (I measured him barefeet just a hair width under last month). We were going to try 2 weeks ago, but DD hurt her back, so we passed.

Looking forward to no Chicken exit in a few weeks.

My favorite Chicken exit is Tower of Terror.

The first year DS did not want to ride ToT but he wanted to go throught the pre-show line. So we get to the elevator load and he tells the CM he does not want to ride so CM says stand over here (between the elevator load areas).

I go with him while DW and DD ride. So we are standing there with another dad and his younger son waiting to exit throught the Chicken door. The CM opens the door to the exit elevator. The young boy took and involuntary step backwards when he saw the elevator! He knew ToT was an elevator drop and thought the CM was tricking him into going on the ride.

I guess someone in imagineering didn't think it through when the chicken path to ToT is an elevator.

I've still never quite figured out how the load and unload for ToT works. Where does the car go after unload? Does it make another turn is the load on a different level?

At DHS-

Your elevator car actually travels over to a completely different "shaft" after making its first
couple of stops.

The unload is on a different (lower) floor and in a different section of the building than the loading.

I am going to do a post explaining why some other people use the so-called "chicken exit". Because we can't physically do the actual ride.

I would give a lot to do the drop at Twilight Zone but I can't because I broke my neck. However, I can and do the preshow and boiler room because the effect is amazing. And, like someone else said, the exit is still themed beyond what anyone would imagine (and few of us have seen). Then, sitting and waiting for my husband to come down, I have a great time watching everyone else come off the actual drop of the ride.

I have more fun not riding than I did riding. And I will thank Disney for having these types of exits because there are those of us who CANnot and not WILLnot ride.

DS was 3 when DH asked him if he wanted to ride the elevator ride (ToT). My son loved elevators, so he agreed. He hated it, and promptly told us after the ride that he likes elevators but not elevator rides. DH tricked him for sure. Poor baby. Fast forward to our upcoming trip for his 5th birthday. When asked if he is going to ride the elevator ride, he says he will try it again. Why do I sense they will be using the chicken exit?

This happened to my niece - Grandaddy didn't understand why she wouldn't get on the elevator until I explained and promised it was just a regular elevator - She's 23yo now and still can't get her to ride the ride!

Huh...I never thought about that. I guess for those of you who can't ride the rides for physical reasons, but still want to wait with your family, the chicken exits are a wonderful idea. And you know...maybe Disney thought of that and that's why they made even the chicken exits something cool to see!!

Ditto. I can't ride the rides but love it when I can see the pre-show. The highlight our trip a 2 years ago was being able to ride Star Tours with no motion. I had found a tip just before we left that we should ask if they would run a car without motion if the line was short. Our third time past the wait was 5 minutes. The CM's could not have been nicer. I really wish more of the exciting rides would have this option or at least a place to watch a still video...

I'm thinking I will have my daughter will have to make use of the chicken exit on our trip (in ONE WEEK ). She is both fascinated and terrified by the thought of Test Track. I told her it goes the same speed as our car on the highway and she was fine until she saw a video of the car banking the curve and flipped out because it goes sideways. She says she is going to ride it but we'll see.

The highlight our trip a 2 years ago was being able to ride Star Tours with no motion. I had found a tip just before we left that we should ask if they would run a car without motion if the line was short...

And I'm going to follow up with, "I don't really think so anymore". I haven't seen a slow time at Star Tours since the 3D opened up. One of the best things Disney ever did was change this so you never know what you are going to get.

I went on last Saturday and it was a 5 minute wait. After we got off, I think it went up to all of 15 minutes. This was around noon or so.
