Just FYI for people asking about the chapstick and why it is not allowed since it's not a liquid. The guidelines are for liquids, gels, and items of similar consistency. Some of the explosives planned to be used were to be in paste form. Easily put into a chapstick tube. Chapstick and deoderant containers would be easy to hide this in.

Also re: drinks after security. Security is not perfect. The news reporters that have shown this by doing pieces where they are able to go in/out of secure doors or board a plane sitting at a gate proves this. One of the suspected terrorist worked at the airport!!!!!!!! How can they tell a drink can purchased after security from one that was purchased (or brought in w/ explosives) before security. THEY CAN"T.. that is why all drinks are not allowed on planes...pretty simple.

They are making these 'knee jerk' reactions (as some have called it here) based on the information obtained by the raids that described the common household objects to be used to plan their bombing of 10 planes.

Hope that helps clarify somethings and why they are doing these things.

If you really have a medical condition requiring chapstick then get your doctor to write a script. Make sure your name is on the tube/package.

We'll get through this!! This JUST happened and they need time to sort through processes.

Perhaps if they had done what they were SUPPOSE to do over the past FIVE years we would NOT still be "knee jerk" reacting. ....

For example they KNOW the so called "puffer" machines are MUCH more effective then our current method of having TSA agents paw thru your luggage looking for explosives, but they haven't rolled those out. So NOW when something happens they panic and do this.

And for them to act like this is a NEW threat pretty much shows a level of stupidity that's hard to imagine. The first "liquid bomb" was set off on an airliner in the Pacific over 10 years ago.. Did the TSA never notice???

I agree with what you say.

ARe the puffer machines the ones that basically shows virtually everything (including anatomy) or are they just the chemical sniffing? MAybe the sniffers can't detect some things. Thise viewing machines that would be great have met SO much opposition from people who care more about their privacy than security.

They had them on the news. The lady had a bottle of listerine in her pocket and you could see it on the screen. You could also see the the gray outline of her breasts. They had these years ago but half this country has a stick up their butt and found it offensive.

So yes they have technology but the people did not like it. So make a machine that see everything but a gray blurry nipple and we'll be all be happy. :goodvibes lol

FINALLY!!!! Someone with common sense. Thank you.

DH went through a puffer this last wednesday at PDX. He said it's not the full anatomy, it's basically blasting you with air and smelling for explosives. DH likened it to the air blast from the natives on Indiana Jones at Disneyland (everything has to be related to something Disney, right?).

ETA: according to the TSA list of prohibited items
Lip glosses / liquids are prohibited but "(solid lip glosses and blushes are permitted) "

Carol, since we are not totally privy to all the information obtained on terrorist threats and technology shouldn't we refrain from calling people stupid? I would bet that this latest terrorist attempt was with new technology, hence the rationale for the banning of these items.
I realize you think that the security measures are silly and don't do any good, but, in all honesty, I think they work well. The fact that we have security is a deterrant.
I do think that some of the stuff they ban/allow makes no sense at all.
BUT, those are the rules. If you want to fly, then you have to follow them.
The choice is easy. Fly=obey the rules. Don't like the rules=don't fly.
Perhaps I am too easy going, but, since I don't have anything to hide, I don't care what they look at.
As to the technology that they have today. Well, as mentioned before, public sentiment stopped that one.

So, one of the terrorists worked at the airport! This is the problem right here. The goverment, needs to be able to weed out these sickos, right here in our country and abroad. Having the borders open to anyone, and everyone causes a threat. Terrorist, can come here, plan here, and be here for years. Taking jobs. There has to be a way to identify everyone. We all know, most can falsify documents. So, as I see it, this calls for a more drastic measure, to rid ourselves of all these detestable people. We can start by closing all the borders!!

Wow, good thing that didn't happen before your ancestors imigrated here.
Wonder where you would be if that had happened.

Well, I have to lightly agree with Faindrops47. We ARE a country at war and I believe during these times, we need to close our borders. We have students from all over the world coming here to study, etc. It's too easy to get into this country, train in aviation or someother source and fly a plane into a building. It's not about immigrants, it's about wising up. These terrorist aren't coming into our country on a boat via Cuba, they're coming in on public/commercial transit. We need to do what we have to do to keep our children safe.

Nope, I can call them stupid if I want. They are acting like this is NEW EXCITING threat, IT IS NOT A NEW THREAT
It's a re-use of an OLD PROVEN THREAT.

If you have not been protecting me from a KNOWN THREAT for five years I can consider that stupid if I like. I feel no conjuntion to defend the TSA for failure to plan for KNOWN terriost bombing methods until the method is basically FORCED upon them by the Brits.

And the "terrorists coming in" theory has a flaw. Several of the folks arrested in Britan were born there so they didn't come in from anyplace besides a local city! So how is "closing the border" going to help? Remember some of our best terrorists were home grown. Oklahoma City anyone????

Even though, you posted this to be snide. I will answer you. This is not centuries ago, when my ancestors came here. This is 2006. The world we know today. With terrorist threats all around. But, just for arguments sake. I can say that, if my ancestors were not bought here. Probably the Native Americans. Would still own thier own land. Probably, all of us would not be here. And more than likely all of this would not be happening.

CarolA,

I know you were speaking in reference to another post. Do not get me wrong. I understand, we do have terrorists among us. ie:Oklahoma city. But, there are those that come from other countries also. That are planning to do harm to the U.S. Do not believe for one second that there are no terrorists hiding among us from other countries. There are several. Now, my point is yes there may be flaws, in closing the borders. But, the time to do something is now. Not wait for another attack. Leaving the borders open, in times like these. In my opinion not a very wise choice.

You certainly can call the stupid if you wish. I can call them lax for not implementing these precautions before now, but, then again, had they done that, the same outcry would have occured, be it now or then.
People want to be protected as long as it does NOT inconvience them in any way.
You simply can not have it both ways.

Nope, not snide in the least. This is an open country. If there are terrorists they are probably already here. Closing the borders now would be like locking the barn door after the horse ran out. Besides, anyone can get into this country via Canada or Mexico very easily. I can zip across the border without ever seeing an official. Just drive up the street in VT and bam, there you are.

And EXPLAIN to me HOW this is keeping you safe. If the terrorist is an AMERICAN CITIZEN how does this help??? Basically you are saying that ALL terrorists had to come from someplace else. That's fundamentally wrong. Some of them could be your NEXT DOOR NEIGHBORS!

(And do I read into this that it's ok to let someone in on a boat from Cuba, just not on public transport?)

(Off to add some folks to my ignore list. This type of "if they don't look like me" prejudice does WAY too much to my blood pressure)

You're kidding right?? Guess I'm out, even though I pay my taxes to your government each year, and don't even live in the US.

Enjoy your fantasy life in that little bubble you created - I'm glad that I don't live in it with you!

The ignorance which continues to blossom here just apalls me - time for me to move on, and find a more intelligent conversation.

Well, I agree with your sentiments on this one. TOTALLY!!!!!
Also, it seems that only the children need to be kept safe.

Well said!!!! ITA.

Oh please.... I'm far from your sterotype. I'm a 3rd generation American. It is a fact that we are country at war. A FACT.
Oh, and WHAT American terrorists are you speaking of?
Don't bother putting me on your ignor list, I could care less.

Personally, I don't feel one bit safer with the new regulations in place. My husband said it was a joke to see how many people smuggled beverages purchased past security at MDW onto his plane (and this was the day after the threat was uncovered). Considering that one of the suspects worked in security at the airport, I figure it wouldn't be too difficult for one to get a job as a vendor.

And there are exceptions to the liquid ban, such as baby formula. Hello! One of the suspects was a mom, and other was pregnant. Blowing up their baby or child is no big deal...really, it's probably an honor for them. And having to take a sip of the liquid is no guarantee of safety. If whatever is in there is not immediately fatal, a person who is going to be dead in an hour or two isn't likely to worry about the long-term effects.

Just about the only way to truly be safe would be to have people file naked onto the plane and then to be cable tied into their seats.
