The Cat Ate The Tinsel-Prayers

Hey Guys,
Today ( More Like This morning ), My cat of the family, Lucky, ate some plastic.i tinsel off our tree and started throwing up tinsel and blood. We took him to the vet like two hours ago and there kind of a problem including small intestine. he'll have to stay for a couple of days and we think he'll be all right, but we'd still really appreciate some prayers.

Yes, it is true how cats always eaqt the stufff they aren't supposed to. But u know what's so strange? My cat has always eat the stuff he isn't supposed to ( he is a very naughty and crazy cat @_@ ) but this is the first time he has gotten sick from eating that stuff... What a mystery

Tinsel is very dangerous for animals. Because it's so long, and has sort of sharpish edges and is not digestible, it can do serious damage to their intestines. Basically it can get stuck in the intestinal tract and just rip its way through the cat's system. If you have cats that like to eat things, please PLEASE do not use individual tinsel strands on your tree. Try using garland or something else instead.

Also please remember that poinsettias are poisonous to animals and children.

A lot of people who love their pets don't realize that ordinary household items can be very dangerous for their furry friends. I'm glad Lucky is living up to his name!

Hey I know this a a little bit of a different thought but cats link in...

I have a 5-6 month old kitten, and am wondering how in the world I'm going to keep it out of the Christmas tree..She is always into things that my older cat has never done. I've been racking my brain to come up with a way to keep her out of the tree and would like some suggestions or tips that others have used in the past. Please just don't suggest a smaller table-top tree as this would disappoint the GK's immensely. (Tried that one year and was told not to do it again lol) Any thoughts or suggestions?

Flower Power, I have no idea. I'm having the same problem with my 7-month old kitty. We've had the tree up all week with no ornaments on it yet, just the pre-lit strings of lights and she's been chewing on the electrical cords a lot - thank goodness it's not plugged in yet! My mother seems to think she'll get zapped a little but it won't hurt her and she'll learn, but I know my cat better. With our luck she would get hurt, and she still wouldn't learn. She's a troublemaker for sure! I have noticed that she's not into the tree as much as she was the first couple of days, so she seems to be getting used to it being there.

I think we're just going to have to do the same thing we did when the kids were little - hang most of the ornaments closer to the top and leave the bottom branches bare!

Good luck keeping Kitty out of the tree. They're just so darn shiny and interesting!

I can give you a good tip for stopping the cord chewing. Go to the pet store and buy a bottle of Bitter Apple and use it to coat the cords that she can reach. I had a cord chewing problem with my older cat and let me tell you that the Bitter Apple works wonders. I have coated all my cords in the house with it and she never ever chews a cord any more. The Bitter Apple is sort of greasy when you apply it but if you just take a paper towel and lightly wipe the excess off its fine. I give my cat a "taste" of it on her nose every once in a while just to remind her. They hate the taste of even though it tastes like nothing to a human. (I tried it!!) There is not a cord that comes into the house that doesn't immediately get coated now. The bottle of bitter apple lasts a life time and apparently the taste on the cords lasts about as long. I only recoat if I have wiped the cord off while cleaning.

As you can tell we( me and family) just learned that too and were NEVER EVER going to put tinsel on our tree again. We have 2 Cats In House and 3 Outside, so we will always have to be careful with that tinsel. Btw We bought it at Target, Dont Know if that matters but might tell people never to buy tinsel at Target.

We also have a 6-7 month old kitten and she is a inside cat and she has been ' LOVING ' the tree so we have to be very careful.... ( Luckily we took ALL the tinsel off our trees, which includes my tree and family tree).
About your problem, All I can say is, you just have to do what we've been doing which is WATCHING ( Why I put this in capitals is because some people never do this and it is UNSAFE for many reasons that you all probably know ) your kitten or cat when She is around your christmas tree.

I've been thinking about the zap thing recently actually. Do any of you remember the movie ' Christmas Vacation ', where Clark doesn't know the cat is chewing on the lights,TREE, etc. and he plugs in the lights and the cat gets zapped and goes ' Bye Bye '. This part of the movie reminds you of something doesn't it?... This is probably the look on your face right now as you remember this all cat owners: .
Btw we do the same thing every yearwhich is Hang the ornaments up higher, so the cats dont try to eat the ornaments.

We used Same thing with my puppy when she was little, Bitter Apple, because she liked to bite. Never thought you could use on cords though... Might Try It, Thanks for the idea.
