I don't think it is right though to blame her pregnancy. Women in theater get enough crap as it is and a producer should be better than to throw leads under the bus. If they wanted to try and keep it open there are other actresses and perhaps the throw in a stunt casting in that role or another role. Ticket sales are of course the final draw but the producer could have left it at that he didn't have to mention Audra.
Exactly. Clearly, the ticket sales were the culprit here, and they're cutting their losses before taking a chance on letting the show run without Audra. But Rudin's statement was awful. It read as "We're thrilled for Audra, but your pregnancy killed our show".
Audra was going to be out for the summer anyway, to perform Lady Day on the West End, which means the ticket sales would have likely suffered regardless of whether or not she had gotten pregnant. He didn't have to reference her pregnancy the way he did in that statement.
