The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

I don't think it is right though to blame her pregnancy. Women in theater get enough crap as it is and a producer should be better than to throw leads under the bus. If they wanted to try and keep it open there are other actresses and perhaps the throw in a stunt casting in that role or another role. Ticket sales are of course the final draw but the producer could have left it at that he didn't have to mention Audra.

Exactly. Clearly, the ticket sales were the culprit here, and they're cutting their losses before taking a chance on letting the show run without Audra. But Rudin's statement was awful. It read as "We're thrilled for Audra, but your pregnancy killed our show".

Audra was going to be out for the summer anyway, to perform Lady Day on the West End, which means the ticket sales would have likely suffered regardless of whether or not she had gotten pregnant. He didn't have to reference her pregnancy the way he did in that statement.

So...my work is sending me to NYC for 8 weeks on assignment. I just finished week 2. I was finally brave enough to venture out on the subway and I ended up discovering Broadway and now I am in love. I'm trying to hold myself to one show a week...but we'll see. I enter pretty much every online lottery every day. Last week I actually won the Crucible lottery so I was able to get a ticket for $30. It was my first show and I absolutely loved it.

That was on Wednesday, and I went ahead and got a ticket for Les Mis the very next day. I went to the TKTS booth an hour before the show and was able to get Row H dead center for half off. I also loved that show and the actor who played Jean Val Jean came out after the show which made me love it even more.

Anyone have any recommendations for me or any tips? I'm going to continue to enter the lotteries but if I don't win anything by Thursday I'll prob just go to the ticket box or check stub hub so I can see a show a week. Are there days of the week that are less popular so that tickets might be cheaper? I can't do the matinee show because I have to be in the office until 5 pm.

I've heard really good things about Something Rotten so I think that is near the top of my list, I also want to see Wicked (never have), Lion King (saw it once before when it was touring), Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime and School of Rock. Though I'll pretty much see anything I win lottery tickets for.

When I went to see Fiddler on the Roof a few months ago we walked into the box office during the day and got rush tickets for the mezzanine for $36.. no wait, no lottery, no stress! We entered the Something Rotten lottery, and even though we didn't win we got a consolation discount price of like $59, I think, also in the mezzanine.

Have so much fun in NYC! Get out and explore... I promise it's not that scary when you get used to it :)

I had heard about the walk up cheap tickets, but I probably can't do that since I have to be at work during the day. Do you know if any shows might have cheaper tickets at the box office around 6 pm? Or is that too late?

I work in the WTC, so my hotel is in the financial district. I started my first week by just walking around the Financial District and getting acclimated to my surroundings. Last week, week 2 is when I ventured out on the subway. So far I've only been to Times Square with Broadway, and then I did go to the Natural History museum. My work usually flies me home Friday afternoon and back Monday morning but since this was a holiday we had Friday and Monday off so I was able to stay over Thursday night and finally be able to do something high on my list. Most things close by 5 or 6 so I'm unable to experience them during the work week :(

I've always been fascinated by Central Park, so I think I'll explore that area this coming week.

I'm not sure about the box office- maybe someone else can fill you in on that. This was on a Saturday I believe, so that doesn't help you out much. I'd venture to guess, though, that they're going to want to sell tickets as long as the box office is open.

The Financial District is easily one of the most confusing places in the city- I like the area, but I get so turned around down there. The grid streets are so much easier to navigate! Have you gone to Battery Park yet? It's really pretty and within walking distance of the WTC. Central Park is wonderful though, too!

We saw School of Rock last week and LOVED it. We have seen many shows and this is now one of our favorites. We payed full price but I remember seeing something about $37 tickets somewhere. They play on Monday night which isn't a popular theater night so it shouldn't be hard to gat a discount then. I would also not hesitate to pay to see Wicked. That show is absolutely amazing. Have fun!

Attempted to see Shuffle Along yesterday, but failed. Kind of sad about that since I don't think I'll have another chance before it closes. I walked by the box office and thought about getting a ticket, but lately it's been at tkts, so I thought that I'd try to get a better ticket there for about the same price as the lowest ticket at the box office. It was listed on the board, so I got in line, but by the time I reached the ticket window, they had sold out. I thought about walking back to the box office to see if I could snag a ticket there, but instead I purchased a ticket for The Color Purple. What an amazing show! Cynthia Erivo, Heather Headley, and Danielle Brooks were all phenomenal. This was the first show ever where I was actually moved to tears. Highly recommend this one.

I was in NYC with some friends this past weekend and we were on the broadway for broke people plan. We entered a bunch of lotteries. Between all of us, there were lottery wins for Paramour, The Lion King and Wicked. I didn't win any lotteries but decided to pick up half price tickets for the Saturday matinee of Shuffle Along. We really enjoyed it and thought that Billy Porter stole the show. Audra wasn't in the performance we saw but I thought the show was good without her as well.

Looking at Aladdin tickets for a show in two weeks. Is GoodSeat tickets not reputable?

I hear a lot about the half price tickets. How far in advance can you try for those?

I am so confused about the best way to get these tickets for July 20.

Other than Philippa, Lin and Leslie, do we know if any of the other original Hamilton cast is leaving after 7/9?

I haven't heard about good seat tickets so can't comment on that. The half price tickets are day of only. https://www.tdf.org/nyc/7/TKTS-ticket-booths I think it's a great option if there isn't a specific show you have to see. We were happy with just trying to get what we could since there were a lot of shows we wanted to see. The other thing that's good if you're ok being flexible is entering all the lotteries. We waited to see if we won anything (no but our friends did) and went to the half price tickets booth at 1pm to get tickets for the 2pm show. Broadway for broke people lists the available lotteries. http://broadwayforbrokepeople.com

Those are the only people I've heard of that are leaving too. I haven't heard of who the replacements will be for Philippa or Leslie either.

I've heard a rumor that Lexi Lawson is replacing Philippa and I've heard a bunch of rumors for Leslie but nothing seems concrete. The main one I saw floating around is that the Burr understudy Sydney James Harcourt will step in for now and then Josh Henry from Shuffle Along will take over when Shuffle closes. That theory seems to also include Sydney heading to Chicago to play Burr there but like I said nothing seems very concrete there.

Interesting! It was funny because after seeing Shuffle Along I mentioned to my husband that I would love to see Billy Porter in the Burr role. Josh Henry was good too and would be interesting in the role but I loved Billy Porter

broadwaybox.com has a list of all the discounts. I always buy from ticketmaster/tron using a discount code (when available).

This was announced today:

"Two-time Tony Award nominee Brandon Victor Dixon begins performances mid-August (date TBA) as Aaron Burr in HAMILTON on Broadway, it has been announced by producer Jeffrey Seller. Also joining the Broadway cast on July 11 are Lexi Lawson in the role of Eliza Hamilton, and Michael Luwoye, who performs as alternate to Javier Muñoz in the title role. Starting July 11, Mr. Muñoz will formally take over the role of Hamilton, a part he has played as Lin-Manuel Miranda's alternate since the musical debuted Off-Broadway last year. "

OK...can someone help me? Possibly send me a PM? I've been entering the daily online lotteries but I am having trouble figuring out how to enter the online lotteries put on by the company that does Phantom and School of Rock. That one wants to you sign onto a social media platform, and I do that, but then it wants me to confirm by clicking on an icon? What icon? Can anyone help me?

I saw the touring production of Newsies today and absolutely loved it! i think I will have "Seize The Day" stuck in my head all night.
