The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

So who here is wishing they could attend Broadwaycon January 2016?? I just found out about it but, alas, cannot go. I bet it will be a blast. Someone here has to go and report back to us!!!

Oh my goodness. I'm going to be living at Pace University in NYC at the time and I literally have to go. It's a lot of money but I have to swing it!!!

Just saw the Broadway across Canada tour of Beauty and the Beast last night! Overall a good show... best part was the transformation. Very slick and impressive. We were 6 rows back centre stage and couldn't see how they were doing it. Very cool! :yay: Worst part was when Lefou's microphone died just as he was about to start "Gaston". I don't know if he realized it because he certainly did not project his voice in compensation. As I said, we were dead centre 6 rows back and could not hear a word! Well... not quite true. When he was near one of the other actors their mikes would pick up his voice briefly. I don't know why they don't have clip mikes available in the wings for emergencies like that. The theatre company I work with certainly would have slapped one on him lickety split. I felt bad for him... it's his big song and no one could hear it. :( Overall a pretty good show.

You must be in Vancouver since I saw it on Friday night. :) it is actually my second time seeing it. I saw it about 14 years ago pre kids and marriage with a friend and this time went as a family. The first time I had front row seatsand this time was up in the balcony so it was different. Lol. We were second row balcony so we still had a fairly decent view. I enjoyed it but for some reason enjoyed it more the first time. My girls really enjoyed it though. :)

That is awful about the mike. Near the beginning of the show the maid's/ broom mike wasn't working at all. Luckily, they fixed it.

It was a fun show. Lumiere and Gaston were my favourites and I always love the " Be Our Guest" number.

I absolutely agree with you... Lumiere and Gaston were the absolute stars of the show. Belle was very good but Beast was a bit underwhelming. A rich beautiful voice but his stage presence was not "Beastly" enough. They really played him to be quite comedic... giggling, shrieking, swatting at Belle with his tail etc etc. That was a directorial decision so not his call to make but I didn't really like it. I don't think Beast should be the comic relief. Yes he gets nervous and acts a bit goofy but this was too much in my opinion. Leave the comedy for Gaston and Lumiere. I want too feel that Beast is angry and powerful at first... only gradually becoming more vulnerable and kindhearted. On the other hand... wow did Gaston knock it out of the park. At times I could swear I was watching the cartoon character come to life as the resemblance was impressive! LOVED HIM! And that Lumiere is one tall chap!!

Just want to post on here that I downloaded the new soundtrack for the movie version of Last Five Years (probably my second fav musical after Wicked) and it is AMAZING! I can not wait to see the movie on Friday. Anyone else planning in seeing Last Five Years this weekend?

I would like to. With the lack of advertising though, I fear it won't be showing around here. I haven't seen a single poster or commercial anywhere.

Our new broadway season is going to be announced this morning, I am on pins and needles!! This years season was only so-so, this one I hope will be better.

Psst! TL5Y is going to be on demand for some service providers the day it comes out in theaters if you can't find one playing in a theater near you ;) I AM SO PUMPED FOR TL5Y!!!!

That is an insane lineup!!!! Vancouver is getting Dirty Dancing in January which does make me happy. It is getting good reviews from what I read... That movie is my guilty pleasure and the review I read said that the musical is very faithful to the movie so yaaay!
Make sure you see Beautiful!! I just loved it!!!!! And, of course, Newsies... that's a no brainer!! :cool1:

Oh that is awesome. I live in Des Moines and go to Minneapolis sometimes if something amazing is there. May have to make the trek for Gentlemens guide or newsies. As it is I'll be there in August to see Idina Menzel's tour.

I have Season tickets so everything the regular season will be mine!!!
We had Dirty Dancing last fall, it was just ok. They are very faithful, sometimes word for word, except for one weird extra storyline they threw in. The dancing was amazing and I still enjoyed it cuz its one of my favorite movies, but the acting and the chemistry in our cast just wasn't there. A couple of the chorus members though, were absolutely amazing!!! And Lisa stole the show LOL!!!

I am so mad that they dropped it down to PG-13. I am afraid they edited the songs. I will go see it, but I am not happy with the rating.

DH and I saw Book of Mormon in Orlando just after Christmas and really enjoyed it. DD#1 and I are planning to see To Kill A Mockingbird next month at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater, and then DD#1, DD#2 and I are going to a performance of Shrek, the Musical in April. Our trip to see Shrek is sponsored by the Stetson University Life Long Learners group, and it includes a backstage tour and talks with the set designer, the costume designer, and the props master.

We're just getting so cultured - in spite of ourselves!

Has anyone seen the current Broadway production of Cabaret? A friend has tickets for this Saturday's matinee and invited DW and me after another couple had to cancel. I hear Emma Stone is starring. Seems like she'll make a good Sally Bowles.

We saw it in early 1999 with Natasha Richardson in the lead.

Some of the songs are edited and some are left the same but I feel like they did a good job editing them.
