~The BOT Battalion~ BOTS On The Run

Dave - Um, I heard an ugly rumor about you though, this weekend...is it true that you at SIX...6...GUs during the 1/2???:scared1: :lmao:
That is an ugly rumor... There's no way I ate 6 GU's. I don't think... maybe 5, but not 6. Hey, I was hungry. On Friday I ate breakfast in the car on the way to the airport, no lunch, and not that big of a dinner. Saturday I had an energy bar at 4:00am, and it had worn off by the start. I definitely didn't eat the mango gel that Matt and Cindy were trying to push on me.

Hey everyone. It's Matt. I figured since I've actually met you all several times in person (and lived to tell the tale) I should probably get around to registering on the boards. Also this way you can now mock me in a more direct fashion the next time I try to back out of a race.:goodvibes

Now for the race reports:

Since philly I didn't really train at all. Looking at my training logs, I had the following weekly mileage: 8,15,17,33,8,17. Also during most of these runs I felt really bad. I ran slow and during my two long runs (16 and 12 miles) I had to walk the last mile or so. Given this I was really dreading the goofy. I actually told Cindy that I was going to not run the full many many times during the week leading up to the race. At least I was well tapered:thumbsup2

The Half

After waking up at the ungodly time of 2:45 am Cindy and I both made it to the start around 4:10 or so and immediately got into line for the porta-potties. Thankfully there were plenty and the lines moved fast. While we were waiting in line, one women was freaking out that the porta-pottie she used was out of hand sanitizer. I was just happy that the one I used still had some TP.

After taking care of business, we headed over to the W family reunion area and met up with Dave and ThunderMatt. Dave was recording commentary on the race for the podcast and he interviewed Cindy before the race. I've never actually listened to the podcast before, but I might have to start if Cindy is going to be on it.

I didn't really have any plan going into the half, but I knew I wanted to run it slow to save my energy for the full. The start was pretty congested, so I just stuck near Dave and Cindy. We ended up talking nearly the whole time and it was really really fun. The miles just seemed to fly by, we were having such a great time. Around mile 11 or so there was a DJ playing MC Hammer's "Can't touch this" and I danced while running for about 2 minutes or so. Cindy mocked me and said that I was going to pull a muscle.

Near the end I picked up the pace a little bit because running through epcot I got pretty excited. Also I really didn't want Cindy to bet me. Dave heard me say this, and he picked up the pace even more so he could beat me. Right at the finished line there was a lone line of Disney characters cheering us on. Luckily I had enough of a lead over Cindy to give Stitch a big hug before I crossed the line. Even though it was cold out, I'm sure I was pretty sweaty. Hopefully I didn't gross out whoever was inside the costume too much.

I think we all finished around 2:06. Not a bad time and I can honestly say I've never had more fun running a race than I did while running with Cindy and Dave. If all training runs could be this fun, I'd probably run 100 miles per week.

The Full

After waking up at 2:45 am two days in a row, I was insanely tired the morning of the full. I felt like I had no energy and I just wanted to go back to bed. Cindy and I stumbled to the start. We looked around for wish folks, but only saw Tracy and Chet. I later saw Tracy cheering during the race, but I don't think she saw me.

Once again I didn't really have any plan for the full other than to survive, and to hopefully beat Cindy again. Out of the three marathons we have run so far Cindy has been me twice and she wasn't that far behind me during philly either. I ended up going out at around a 10 minute per mile pace. It felt comfortable enough and I was just hoping that I could hold on to that pace for long enough so that once I started walking I would be somewhat close to the finish.

The first part of the race through Epcot was really crowded and I just tried to keep running my pace without tripping over cones or other people in the dark. Once we got to around 4-5 miles, the course opened up a bit more and it became easier to relax and just run. I saw Howard and Steve around mile 6 and said Hello as I ran past.

During most of the race I was kind of bored (the marathon really takes too long to complete) so I tried to chat up all kinds of strangers that were running near me--I'm sure Jody hates people like me. I ended up talking to an army guy in his mid 60s running with a huge american flag for a while. I also ended up talking with a woman from Arlington VA who had run a bunch of the same local races that Cindy and I had run and with some other random wish folks that I passed. One guy named Bob was also running the goofy and he offered to buy me an ice cream if I was at the boardwalk ice cream shop at 4:00 pm.

Sometime during the stretch from Magic Kingdom to Animal Kingdom, my right knee started to hurt pretty bad. Around mile 4, though, I had spoken with two women from team in training and they told me about this stuff called bio-freeze. I didn't have anything to lose, so the next time I ran by a medical tent I put some biofreeze on both my knees. It is AMAZING! My knee pain went away and I was able to run the rest of the race pain free.

Around mile 21 I was just getting ready to consider walking a bit, when I saw Cindy at the out and back portion of the course. I knew that she was only a mile behind me and she looked like she was running pretty strong. I knew that if I was going to beat her, I couldn't take any walk breaks, so despite the fact that I was fading pretty fast I really pushed myself to keep going. This was made a bit easier by the fact that the last 4 miles or so are through Hollywood studios, the boardwalk and Epcot and the crowds were really out in force there. After running around world showcase, I knew we were getting close to the finish and I picked up the pace a tiny bit to finish in 4:29.

It was really good to see you all again, and despite my fears that the goofy would be "the worst weekend of my life" I actually had a great time and really enjoyed both the half and full. I agree with Cindy's comments that the goofy was probably the least miserable of all my marathons.

Can I get some opinions from you guys? Should I do Goofy or just stick with the marathon in 2010?

Go for it and do the Goofy. The goofy isn't a substitute for running a fast marathon, it is a completely different beast, but I think it is great fun and that you would really enjoy it. I actually think that the goofy worked out well this year with us running philly as a "fast" marathon and running the goofy for fun. Maybe next year you can do something similar again. Run a local fall marathon for your fast marathon and run the goofy for fun. When I do the goofy again, that's what I would like to do.

Edit: Oh and one other thing, running the races didn't really stop Cindy and me from enjoying our time in the parks. The races start so early that you finish in plenty of time to still get most of a full day in at the parks. The main downside is that you have to go to bed early, and it is really hard to refrain from drinking a few beers after the half.

Um, yeah, I meant to mention that Matt said he was thinking about joining the Disboards. I didn't realize that he meant today or that he was planning on writing an essay . . .

Matt - um, hi. It's kind of weird to post to you. You spelled Jodi's name wrong.

Sorry Jodi. I'm still trying to figure how to match real names with dis board names. Now I have to remember spelling too?

Lou - here are my thoughts - I really liked doing the Goofy because of the fact that I didn't worry about my time for either race. The fact that I wasn't constantly checking my watch to see what my pace was made the whole experience much more enjoyable. If you are worried about time, the Goofy is probably not a good idea. (Then again, if you are really worried about time, Disney is not a good marathon to run in the first place).

I really liked that I did Philly as my serious race and this as my fun race. It also allowed me to do my really serious training before the holidays and be much more relaxed about training during the busier holiday time.

If you do do the Goofy, you can set different goals for yourself than having a fast half or fast full. Although I said I wasn't worried about time, I actually did have 2 time related goals: (1) to not have either race be my slowest time at that distance and (2) to finish with a total Goofy time of under 7 hours.

Except for wanting to get to bed early on Friday, running the half wouldn't really take too much out of your park time.

I think the Goofy is worth doing at least once. Now that I've done it, I honestly can't imagine going back and wanting to do only the full and not the Goofy. However, I know many others don't feel the same way.

Cindy - I like your approach. WDW wasn't a real serious marathon and maybe the best approach would be to just plan to have fun and forget about PR's. Not a bad plan. Imagine actually going to WDW to have fun and not obsessing about time.

I'll probably take a shot at getting in NYC this year again. If I get in NYC will be the serious race for 2009. If I don't get in I'll either run Philly again or possibly run Atlantic City. Either one would still be my serious race. Then I could pull a Jodi and just cruise into WDW on my fall marathon laurels.

I'll see what the other Bots say.

What happened to the Chargers? My son was moping around big time on Sunday. He put all his eggs in the Chargers basket and was having a hard time watching them lose, especially after the Eagles won. I told him there was plenty of room on the Eagles bandwagon for newcomers.

Matt - Welcome! I hear you. I'll be staying up no matter but it's hard not to eat the bad food at WDW. But if I am not worrying about times I can deal with an emergency Jodistop. The only way for me to avoid the beers will be to avoid Epcot until Sunday which is what I did last year. My final lap around the World Showcase started at 5PM at Mexico with a Dos Equis and ended around 9PM at the UK with a Guiness.

Who the heck is this StitchAttack lurker? Man, he mis-spelled Jodi's name? She's gonna open up a can of whoop-a** on you.

So Matt, do I understand you ran a 3:29 Full Marathon after running a half marathon the day before?

For the last three years Cindy and I have been out of town one week in January, each time while we were out of town the chargers lost. In 2007 we were out of town at a friend's wedding and the chargers lost to the patriots in the playoffs. In 2008 the chargers beat Tennessee and Indy in the playoffs while we were at home. Then we went to Jamaica and the chargers lost to the patriots AGAIN. This year we were at home and the chargers beat Indy. Then we went to Disney World and the Chargers lost to Pittsburgh.

The lesson is, that when I'm at home the Chargers NEVER lose in the playoffs, but when I go on vacation they ALWAYS lose. So until the chargers win the superbowl, it looks like Cindy and I won't be running the Disney Marathon again.

I wish, that should have been a 4:29--and now through the magic of editing it is. Apparently too much running has reduced the flow of blood to my brain to dangerously low levels.

I was wondering about that myself. I'm thinking you must have been taking some "special" vitamins since Philly to run 3:29. Either that or you stuck your chip on the back of Mike's shirt before the start of the race when he wasn't looking. :lmao:

Hi Anne, So good to see you again this weekend. I am so glad you are back on the boards, I thought about you often in your absence.

BTW, you must have got a different version of the BOT story because it is kind of lame story, we just humor Jodi.popcorn:: :lmao:

Colleen - Count me in! We can work our way across the World and end up in that patio area by the UK to watch IllumiNations with beers in hand.

Hi Anne!

I think you guys have me leaning heavily towards Goofy. I think I'll book it this week.

Yes, I agree with everyone else, if you want to race, run a cool, flat Fall marathon and then Goofy will be just icing on the cake. Like Matt, my training between Philly and WDW was lacking, just getting in one 14 miler, but it didn't matter, I ran pretty much ran the same time. DH worked his butt off to get his BQ because of the extra .3 of a mile he probably ran with all the corners and curves. I am sure that last mile around World Showcase adds quite a few more steps.
